Thanks Kev - but is a new manager needed?

Should Maher go?

He does seem to be overly sensitive to any criticism during matches though, if he’s getting triggered by fans shouting ‘forwards’ that’s his problem. Football fans are impatient in general, that’s natural and something every manager should expect and not react to.
IMO the manager should be just as impatient, the fans are not wrong. Urgency kills the oppo, as we've seen when we encounter teams with drive and intent.

It's now 4 months since I decided that king Kev wasn't the man to take us forward, in a firefighting situation there is no one better but the negative boring football just isn't for me and despite 2 good wins (prior to yesterday) I still couldn't get excited.

I don't have the answers but I have believed for quite a while that this setup will not get us out of this awful league. I am sick of hearing "give Kev a chance to sign players" how many new faces have we seen this season? Have things really improved? IMO "No we have gone backwards just like our boring style of football"

I know it's all down to losing OK and HC as everyone who has put them on a pedestal keeps reminding us but I don't buy that for one minute, HC was often injured and certainty not irreplaceable and I never once left RH saying if OK goes we are screwed.

We are setup as a defensive, crab playing, frightened to commit in case we concede or frightened to shoot in case we miss team and that will not get us promoted or anywhere near it. 3 points off the play offs we may be but the others have games in hand and we have played recently (except Barnet, yes the mighty Barnet 😂 who we stood and watched score at will) some very poor teams in the league.

Sorry all you "he has still credit in the bank" loyal supporters of a man who will always be a legend for our club but this season with no outstanding team in the league to be in awe of has been s#¡t and I have had enough of paying good money to be bored senseless.

As i said in another thread all we seem to do is sign position fillers, never players with flair, or if they have any it seems to disappear in Kev's system. I dont go along with this "wait until the summer signings, pre-season etc" He has had a long time to adapt a system that suits the players he has bought in but is rigorously sticking to his game plan of defend at all costs and it is turgid watching it most of the time. There is no heart in this team and a lot of the players seem to be just happy to pick up their wages rather than play for the badge.

Unfortunately i cannot see this improving whoever we sign whilst he sticks to it.

Absolutely spot on Cricko! In your opinion do you think Darren Curry would be the better guy in charge?

The FA Trophy result was of course awful, but it needs to be used by Kev & co as a watershed with a massive sea change in player attitude.

Yesterday I visited Home Park for their clash v WBA - on paper the visitors should have walked it and, in the first half with 73% possession they did, but they failed to score thanks to a huge change in attitude that the new manager has brought. In the Jan transfer window he has shipped in three East European defenders (and shipped out two talented players with hugely questionable attitudes) - they clearly have some ability and were purchased at a price we can only dream of, but more than that they gave 100% and outwardly showed it too. One of the signings is a tall Haaland look-a-like who made his debut yesterday - whenever he did a really good tackle he fist pumped, this simple thing got noticed by his teammates who responded (whereas in many previous games some of them had been sulky) and of course the crowd loved it creating an increasingly vibrant atmosphere that spurred him and the rest of the team on even further. When WBA went 1-0 up on 70 mins the effort just intensified, and when Argyle's sub came on to score twice the Home Park roof lifted off.

Kev & co can do that - get the players in tomorrow and somehow instill in those who are a bit quieter the will to give it all and outwardly show it. For some it won't be a natural thing but if a few get it then the rest will follow. Ralph IMHO is key here, he needs to be more vocal. Bonne as we saw from his Daggers celebration has the passion, and Bridge bleeds Blue, they just need to show it more. When I first started watching Southend in the early 1970's I really would have preferred to have ben at Chelsea or WHU where all my mates were but dad insisted, and I then saw Dave Worthington who was not blessed with talent but always gave 100% and showed it - he used to cajole the crowd in to a reaction and it really had a great effect, I loved it, and from that moment on I was a Shrimper.

There is no distraction now, we have more time to prepare for the remaining games and no more will be shifted to midweek thanks to the Trophy taking precedence - we will play Yeovil on a Saturday and take a decent following as always instead of much fewer numbers on a Tuesday night. The fixture run in isn't bad - we have the talent to beat most of the teams in this league, we just need to show more guts, get in the play offs and then ride on the crest we will have built to have a stab at getting out of this awful league

Right, I'm off to play Sunday morning pickleball. I'm ready now.

Iv said plenty of times this group of players don’t need an experienced manager just a manager who’s tactically versatile and is willing to let them express themselves . I don’t believe these are all bad players they are just being told to play in a boring defensive rigid formation/tactics. Thank you for last season Maher but you’ve shown you aren’t up to getting this club out the division . Time to go I’m afraid

I'm wondering now if it's a case of "too many cooks". why do we need a head coach, assistant head coach and a first-team coach? too many voices? do they all agree all of the time?

I think it is pretty obvious why we haven't been able to get many decent players in over the last few years, and it isn't down to scouting.
Yes there are outside influences that affected it. But a sample of those we've brought in last few years, can't remember all so feel free to add:

Kendall - miss
Walker - miss
Waldron - miss
KAF - miss
Wind - 50/50
Crowther - miss
Morton - hit
Gubbins - miss
Mooney - miss
Cardwell - hit
Powell - miss
Fonguck - 50/50
Lomas - miss
Kensdale - hit
Wreh - miss
Dackers - 50/50
Cosgrave - miss
GSM - hit
Taylor - hit
Miley - hit before but declined rapidly
Murphy - miss
Hyde - miss
Arnold - hit
Kabongolo - miss

It's not a great ratio, and we have managed to make a fair few signings between our club issues.

Still believe with the right manager the likes of Kendall , Walker and KAF will be good. Rather get rid of the manager before a clear out imo then the new man can judge

Risk taking on signings is inevitably greater outside the football league and that risk is amplified by many of the players you've stated not being first-choice targets.

The term 'bargain bin' is a euphemism used by retailers to get rid of end-of-life items. It's not full of bargains, it's full of cheap **** and we have been using it for nearly a decade.

The time for action is surely now. Get a new coaching team in and give them a chance to assess what is needed in time for summer recruitment in order to mount a realistic challenge for promotion next season.

I seem to remember this famous whiteboard covered all scenarios. There’s only so much longer we can keep saying this - it’s Kevin’s job to get the best out of what he’s got. What concerns me is that we hear players weren’t listening/following instructions yesterday. Why is what I want to know. We were supposedly only bringing in players with good character, Maher had final say etc.. so he wanted them.

It’s a slight concern isn’t it? Especially when we play like we did against Charlton and almost take them to pens. Many of the same players. Why the inconsistency? I don’t buy that all the players are ****, sorry.
