Head Coach Kevin Maher says he’s delighted with the two signings he’s made early on into the close season and has also reiterated the club’s desire to continue strengthening the squad before pre-season.
The Blues first team will be back in at Boots & Laces Training Ground at the end of June, when new arrivals Dan Mooney and Cav Miley will meet their teammates for the first time.
Mooney and Miley completed moves to south Essex last week as Maher secured two of his top targets early on into the summer.
And Maher spoke at length to southendunited.co.uk about the club’s recruitment plans as he continues to work alongside Head of Football John Still, Senior Football Strategist Stan Collymore and the rest of the football department.
“Delighted to get the two signings we have made nice and early,” said Maher. “I’m grateful to the chairman and the club for backing us and allowing us to do that.
“There were quite a few players that left the club [at the end of the season] and some difficult decisions within that were made, so for us to get to work early was important.
“A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes in terms of recruitment and what we’ve been looking at for a number of months, so I’m really pleased with who we’ve brought in so far and fingers crossed there will be a few more coming through the door hopefully pretty soon.”
Mooney was Altrincham’s top scorer with 13 goals last season while Miley comes with defensive midfield qualities and good experience in the National League from his time at Eastleigh.
“I think it’s an indication of the intent we have. There was interest in Dan [from other clubs] which is understandable, he had a great season with goals and assists and the numbers he reached which were really good.
“We feel he can get better. The age he is at, he’s already shown his ability at this level and there’s plenty of room for improvement. Coming into full time training and full time football once again will only benefit him.
“There’s plenty of positives with that one and with Cav there were other teams in for him too. We had to move quickly on things.
“Someone who is proven at this level is a very good signing for us.”
Attention will turn to other targets, as Maher and co do their utmost to put in place the foundations of the Blues squad for the start of pre-season. However, the Head Coach said Blues may have to remain patient to acquire their targets.
“Ideally you would want a squad for the start of pre-season, everyone would. But it’s not always possible.
“We’re working hard to get as many of our targets in place early. I have to say, the work has been put in from everyone on the recruitment side, going out and watching players throughout the last few months of the season, and that’s testament to the way we’ve changed things at the club.
“Everyone is contributing, and it means we’re in a good position in terms of being ready to move on these players. We know what we want and in an ideal world everyone will be in as early as possible, but we’ll have to wait and see how things work out.
“Fingers crossed we’ll get the ones we want. There’s stuff that we’ve highlighted that we’ve not been able to do right now, as can be the case when it comes to recruitment. These things change week-on-week.
“Credit to the staff that have been out watching games, it means the club is in a good place.
“We had a number of players leave the club and like I said, there were a lot of difficult decisions within that because a lot of players departed who have done ever so well for us.
“Ultimately, I have to do what I believe is right for the club and what is going to take us forward.”
Maher wouldn’t be drawn on when Blues supporters can expect more incomings.
“I won't put a date or time on when we can get signings.
“We’re all working behind the scenes. People are on holiday but there will always be someone at the club working to get things done.
“Let’s see what unfolds.”
