Lopata could play League 2 now, especially with a seasoned pro along side him. I'd be very surprised if the majority of clubs in league 2 aren't aware of this.

20 retained by Stockport for their return to the League.

The captain is an interesting one.

33, 6ft centre half who captained them to the title. Two promotions as captain at Salford, including their promotion into the football league.

Vastly experienced and chips in with goals too.

We’ve let a lot of experience go in White, Atkinson, Coulson & Dunne, and whilst we do appear to be trying to bring the average age of the squad down, you need a blend of promising youngsters breaking through, those in the 23-28 sweet spot, and a few 30 plus who add that additional experience.

The promising youngsters then become your 23-28 year olds, and the 23-28 year olds become your 30 plus and it all cycles through.

Would happily take someone like Hogan, said the same to my son when weve watched him. Exactly the type of player you need alongside the likes of Kensdale and Hobson. Guess also depends what the preferred formation is going to be next season, 352, 343, 442, 433 etc. Being adaptable to all formations is the best option

I thought that when I saw he had been released…can’t say I know too much about him but noticed he has only ever played up north so unlikely to come south at this stage…but this type of player is needed I think

If he would come down south be great hes got lots of experience in this league a born leader. And played a good amount of games too.

Sounds like Josh Coulson, only Coulson was a year younger when he signed for us.

My question would be if his leadership and experience is so valuable why have Stockport let him go, rather than keep his leadership and experience around? It’s presumably not for geographical reasons as he’s not from and hasn’t played down south.

And with “experience” why does a player only apparently gain it once they turn 30? If we’re signing 24-28 year olds, aren’t they already experienced? How come experience from 18-29 doesn’t seem to count but from 30-31 players suddenly become all knowing? How much more do they learn in that year? I suppose they may have to learn how to get there on reading the game rather than on athleticism but the smarter players will have figured that out long before they were 28.

I think you’re on the right lines when you say it cycles through. That means Nathan Ralph, 29, has captained the side, played over 200 games at various levels is now an experienced player - along with the likes of Arnold, Demi and Murphy. And with those four and then those in the next tier down having been around a bit as well, is more experience really a need?

Very similar signing to Coulson on paper (if not quite the same type of defender) - do we want a repeat?

Yes would be very similar, could not get in their team towards the end of the season. Last seen he made a horrendous mistake in trying to control the ball and allowing Boreham Wood player in for free run at goal to tske the lead and then onto beat them at their place, whem they had their wobble in April!

How many games did Coulson play the season before he joined us?

I don’t know the ins and outs of his departure, but I know some of the fans are gutted to see him leave. Maybe looking for a younger replacement, who knows. I keep an eye on Stockport as have family from the area, and the first game I watched was at Edgley Park, but don’t know enough about the situation.

Those ages were more a ball park figure as opposed to a hard and fast rule. You can have 20/21 year olds with more “football experience” than some in the 23-28 category, and equally some in the 23-28 category have more experience than the 30 plus. As you say, things like reading of the game, different scenarios and situations too. The more you do something, the more experienced you become, that is pretty obvious.

It all depends on who comes through the door. We’ve signed the likes of Powell, Wood, Husin, Cardwell, and loaned the likes of Brunt, Lopata, Gubbins, Clark & Neal. Bar Clark, how many of those fall into the experienced category? Does the loan signing of Clark signal that we feel the need for more experience alongside the likes of Hobson & Kensdale?

From what I’ve heard, and the names I know about, we can expect to see a lot of new faces, and a lot of the names I’ve heard are at levels below us, and are younger. Maybe a sprinkle of experience helps, who knows?
