Post-Match Thread and Ratings SUFC vs **** Bailey's Team

http://www.cafc.co.uk/newsview.ink?nid=35702

"I know Steve Tilson's probably come in here and moaned about Nicky Bailey but Christophe's run over and punched Bailey and the only player that Southend management should be disappointed in was their own player.

"When you run 20 yards and punched an opponent, you're off the pitch and when someone that size punches you, you're going to go down.

"Sometimes as a player you're best off going down and then you don't end up having a brawl. So Nick went down. He got punched, and that's it. It was a red card and I think when Steve Tilson sees that in the pictures tonight he can have no complaints.

"Nick ran over and did push a player out of the way and then Christophe's run over and punched him so I thought the ref called that about right. Nicky probably deserved his yellow. But it was also a definite red in my eyes.”

Parkinson, if jeff punched bailey he would be in hospital out cold, bailey is a little prick and a disgrace to football. There are a few players i dont like ie constantine but bailey if he got chopped round his knees and put out for good i would buy whoever did it a few beers.

Who is this Nick? Think you meant Pr...!

The boys gave there all last night with no reward, now they have to gather themselfs and do it all over again, and if they carry on like that the results will come. As a sidenote with that amount of effort from the players, and a near 10,000 gate, i dont want to hear about continued non payment of wages, it just aint on.

well said turkishm but im afraid that is 2 matches now where they have fought like tigers and got no reward just hope Tilson can lift them again. As for the wages they should all be given a bonus for the way they are performing let alone pay its disgusting and Martin should hang his golden locks in shame

Mvoto turned like an aircraft carrier for their winner, two consecutive injury time goals conceded, if only games didnt have injury times

Mildy shouldn't have stopped and turned his back aswell though, if he carried on coming out it would have been harder to score.

Was going to steer clear of the board for fear of what was likely to appear after last night. However, it is good to see the unanimity from virtually everyone concening the performance and effort.
As I remarked on the OMT, Jeff has to bear a great deal of responsibility for what happened last night. I felt, that with eleven men we would probably have won the three points. I can't really blame the defense last night, with the pressure of playing 3/4 of the match with ten men, there were going to be errors..........heroic though we were at times. Thought that Francis was my MOTM, but they virtually all deserved high marks.......also thought that Tilly, tactically, couldn't have done much better.
I honestly don't know whether we are going to go down this year but if we continue to perform like that, with that level of commitment.........then I can't really complain.

Was at Norwich on Tuesday, and I thought we were unlucky to come away with nothing from there because we were at least as good as them for the entire game. On this basis, and with Charlton losing their last couple, I got to RH with high hopes last night. And I was right - for the first 20 minutes we were all over them like a rash and (on these two performances) we look like we are a cohesive team at long last! I'd just forgotten what an a***** NB is!! I didnt see the incident, but guessed that something inoccuous had happened when Bailey performed his audition for the 2012 diving team! Inevitably, JFC was the fall-guy, so I hope we will defend him - can you use evidence of Bailey's past "form" in an appeal??

When JFC got the straight red, I was expecting the same for Bailey, so was a bit surprised he only got booked. Having said that, overall I thought the ref had a good game and most decisions were spot on.

After this, losing the game was no surprise. But, we gave them a run for their money - even with 10 men I thought we looked the better side, especially in the first half, and the goal was a dream. We are usually on the receiving end of those... so it made a nice change that we benefited from a ****-up! In the end though, the midfield was stretched just a bit too far, playing with 10 men for 70 minutes was just too big an ask! If we can keep playing as well as this, we wont have a problem - we have finally got the performances back, we just need our luck to change!

Ratings

Mildy 9 looked unbeatable for most of the game and made some fabulous saves.
Francis 10 Played a blinder! Fantastic delivery, and much better defending. MOM for me, with Vernon, Mildy and Barratt running as very close seconds.
Barrett 9.5 Captain Fantastic last night - nice to see him completely blank Nailey at the end of the match. He looked gutted!!
Mvoto 6 Starting to get his match fitness back, still looks a bit shaky and lacking on confidence, but he needs to be playing to get back on top of his game. Just hope the boo-boys dont get to him - he needs our support!!
Baldwin 8 Looks very solid. I'd like to see him stay here.
Scannell 7 Ran and ran, 10 for effort, but struggled in a very streched midfield so not as effective as he could have been. I think he's a dark horse, very talented, very quick and seriously under-rated. I think Tilly has got it absolutely right keeping him in the side - he's an asset.
Macca 8 Put in a good performance, thought he did well to keep away from Bailey and not knock him out! More like the Macca we all love last night.
JFC 7 on his 20 minutes. Think he was naive more than anything else - maybe no one thought to warn him what Bailey was like! As I say, didnt see the incident but JFC punching Bailey seems a bit out of character. The sending off cost us the 3 points.
Watt 7 Put in a good shift, ran a lot - but like Scannel, wasnt effective in a scant midfield.
Patterson 9 Looks like confidence is growing - definately one to watch.
Vernon 9.5 Superb tonight! Building a good partnership understanding with Patterson and for the first time this season (even taking Barney into account) I have confidence in our strikers. We have 2 players here who know where the box is, and know where the back of the net is!

Overall, 10/10 for effort, commitment and passion.

Very spirited display by the team, a continuation of what went on at Norwich by all accounts and at least they now have a long gap until the long haul to Hartlepool after 3 games in 6 days. Was in hospitality with a mixed group of civilised and well behaved (I think I was the worst!!!) supporters and everyone, both Southend, Charlton and neutrals, thought Bailey should have been sent off for simulation and that Jeff's red was incorrect. It was right in front of us, Bailey, being the typical little arse that he is, was behaving pettily in shoving Jeff while play was stopped (I think he'd already fouled Jeff at this point hadn't he?), Jeff turned to remonstrate and then made the fatal mistake of raising his hand. Bailey jumped towards it then fell to the ground as if he'd been shot, adding in some very theatrical death scene rolls for effect. Total ******. The Charlton fans with us actually dislike him almost as much as us and don't rate him at all.

Mildy - 8, great game for the big man, just marked down slightly as I felt he could and should've done better for the 2nd
Francis - 9, MOM, this is the Franno we love to see, some great crossing, good corners and free kicks. Reid did give him quite a torrid time though and with Johnnie Jackson behind him this was a very challenging night for him and on the whole he did a lot better than normal in dealing with it
M'voto - 7, much improved but still doesn't fill me with the confidence I was lead to believe he should when he signed
Baldwin - 8, would love to sign him. How much longer do the Col U boys have?
Barrett - 8, no complaints about his MOM, worked tirelessly all night. Please cut the grappling though Adam
Scannell - 7, he was subdued I thought, but he was well marked. They'd done their homework
Macca - 8, won the battle in midfield despite being a man short, made Bailey look an arse. That's good enough for me
Jeff - 6, love Jeff but got to mark him down for his naivety in reacting to Bailey. Had been doing ok up to then
Watt - 6, apart from that early free kick did he do anything? Too lightweight for me
Vernon - 8, if this version of Vernon had been playing last weekend at MK we'd have won easily. Good game and the seeds of a good partnership with Matty Paterson
Paterson - 8, the boy is growing in stature and confidence and a 2nd goal in a week will help that further. Worked tirelessly, just needs to learn to pressure the keeper when he's so obviously suspect

Subs:
Moussa for Paterson - 6, expected sub but not the right one imo. The midfield trio were actually doing ok and I felt Laurent as an addition on the wing with Scannell moving infield would have been better at that point
Laurent for Watt - 6, Laurent's reactions in front of goal are not as quick as his reactions on the run. I felt he could have possibly got something stretching them down the wing but bringing him on up front only centralised the game further than it already was for us
Malone for Scannell - 6, again, he could have come on when Moussa did and been more effective. Did my eyes deceive me or did he go to LB and Adam to midfield?

Tactics - got to question things again, the boys were coping well with 10 men, I didn't think things needed to be changed about so much in the 2nd half. And why oh why did Scotty Spencer not get a chance? He'd have put the keeper under so much pressure.

Crowd - 10, no doubt about that. Could hear the West from the box without any bother and loved the anti Bailey behaviour throughout our stands.

Ref - 7, on the whole a good performance, but got the sending off completely wrong.

Excellent effort from the blues tonight, just hope to see that level of passion and commitment every game from now till the end of the season.

Not going to do individual ratings but a couple of points:

Francis - Exceptional tonight, had arguably the best game ive ever seen him have in a Southend shirt.

Patterson - Played with a maturity and ability of someone much older than 19 - lets just hope he gets a chance to develop here without people expecting too much too soon. im not going to get carried away with him but he looked good tonight and long may it continue.

Baldwin & Vernon - They may be Col U but they certainly played like they were Southend tonight, and a few of our "squad" players should have a look at the way they ran themselves into the ground for "our team".

Tilly - Should be applauded for leaving 2 up front to try and hit them on the break, though IMO made a massive mistake by bringing Laurent on. He is too much of a luxury player to bring on in a game where its so tight. If he wanted width on the right and to give Francis some support then Sankofa should have come on to help keep it tight, as all the Charlton attacks second half were down our right hand side.

I also dont understand what he sees in Malone, the guy is absolutely useless and contributes nothing to our play (and based on Francis' free kicks last night Malone should never go near another set piece ever!)

Anyway, thats my mini rant over, as i dont want to detract from a performance that actually has me believing that we can stay up, that the players are committed, and that we seem to be playing our way back into form.

Gutted for you lot I could not believe you lost to an injury time goal again after playing well with 10 men for so long, this is very typical of the luck teams have when they are hovering near the bottom of the table. Glad to see Baldwin and Vernon are playing well for you both are very solid players who will give you 100% effort every game, that is the only way they know how to play. They have been unlucky not to feature in Boothroyds plans he just seems to think we have better players in those positions, and to be honest we probably do.
Ironically Pat is club captain and as you can see is a natural organiser and leader, Scott as I said before is a very industrious skillfull player who's only fault is he does not score that many goals, however if he gets the support of his fellow striker, and decent crosses coming in I think he will put enough away to keep you up. What a shame you were so close to taking 6 points off Norwich and Charlton, what a boost that would have given your chances and our's.

Several Charlton fans in the Railway after the game said that they were ashamed of Bailey last night which, in itself, speaks volumes of the lad. The fact that the total number of professional footballers that have been sent off for assaulting him is now 5 should tell you all you need to know.

Tilson knew what happened as well, as he wasn't exactly reluctant to label Bailey a "cheating little aunt" after the final whistle.

The club should have kicked the knuckle-dragging Bailey-lovers out of Box 5 after their first incident as well.

Anyway, my thoughts, comments and hatred of that vile cheat are all documented here: http://stopthisseason.wordpress.com/

Gutted wasnt the word! Now PLEASE can we dispose of those two Frenchmen? I dont care what Bailey did or said, Christophe was an absolute pr*t, all I saw was his punch/push to Bailey's chest/guts and of course as any 'good pro' would do he went down like a sack of sh*t and as for 'matchwinner' Laurent, just WHEN is he going to win us a match? He fails to set anyone up and has again missed a crucial sitter - on the ferry lads ASAP!

Apart from that, a great performance by the lads, lets hope they play with this pace and commitment against lower teams eh?

Oh yes and Francis was absolutely superb especially as he had little protection from Scannell.

OBL agree with you about the subs. This contributed to our defeat. Spencer woudlve put a lot more effort in than laurent and malone and moussa both gave the ball away too much.

Thank god someone has mentoined Francis. I think I am one of his biggest critics, but what a player he was last night. I dont think he put a shot wrong or didnt track back. Plus what can you say about the clearance off the line. The guys a true pro and battled all night, he never gave up.

As for the rest of the team. Although we lost, I will be wearing my colours today with my head heald high, without any shame and with pride. I am Blue and proud.

Well played boys, keep going. We wont be going down!!!!

Mildy was great, but the goal was his fault, he anticipated it really well, came out and then changed his mind. From West W it looked like he would definately have got to it. Francis was never going to get to it, but that wasn't his fault, as with 10 men we were continually outnumbered

lts be positive, no way are we going down if we can play like that in half the matches left

Exactly my thoughts. He was brilliant tonight and made some cracking saves, but definitly should have come for the ball, and tbh when he first started to go i thought he'd hoof it clear with ease. Shame, because he was top drawer tonight.

No matter how much i enjoy you losing, i must admit it would have been handy if you got a point. We may have 2 games in hand over Charlton but if we lose them both we're stuck behind them again. Just please get at least a point when you play Leeds!

I would rather plate your sister

Thought I'd post my ratings without reading everyone elses posts and without commenting too much on the actual events within the game, because I simply can't find the stomach to.

A couple of things though. Paterson showed why he should've been in the side sooner and was excellent in a very promising looking partnership with Vernon, who also has his best game for the club. We finally gave Watt a bit more service and he looked far more lively, although if he stays, which I'm hoping he will, we have to give him more of the ball, because especially against the sides coming up he'll scare the wits out of them.

Ratings:

Mildenhall 8: Excellent. My fingers are firmly crossed we don't lose him in the summer, but I have a horrible feeling we will.

Francis 7: A couple of decent free kicks and some decent play, ruined by his switching off for the winner. When the ball was played through he turned almost as sharply as Michael Ricketts, clearly thinking the ball would run through to Mildy and oblivious to Reid being behind him. Switch ON!

Baldwin 7: Decent enough again. Exactly the guy we needed some months, meh, years ago.

M'Voto 6.5: Still doesn't look fit and is nowhere near the player he was back in September. The first goal was caused by him going down with a knock after winning the first header, which was followed by Barrett not coming round quick enough to Sodje.

Barrett 7: Better than he has been recently, although as per the note about M'Voto above, it was poor covering from him that allowed Sodje the tap in. This was the type of game where he's suited to left back, because we didn't need an attacking threat from that side.

Scannell 7: Worked his proverbial socks off. In fact he's probably not had to run as much in his entire life. Wasn't as menacing going forwards as he has been due to the situation, but he deserves an awful lot of credit for the amount he effort he put in.

Christophe 5: Was weak in his time on the pitch, as per normal. I don't blame him for the sending off as some people might. He had every right to jump back up after Bailey ran 10 yards to barge into him for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

McCormack 7: Was fiery, in a somewhat controlled manner and made challenge after challenge, but he's quite simply ineffective on the ball now. Time after time he passed back instead of forwards and his passing on the whole was pretty poor.

Watt 6.5: Saw more of the ball than in any other game and therefore this was his best performance. If we don't give him the ball then his talent is wasted though.

Paterson 8: I was mightily impressed. Held the ball up well, made intelligent runs, tricked past people, showed great control and it was a very clean strike for the goal. Lets hope the injury isn't too bad because he could be key for the last 13 games.

Vernon 8: Just like Paterson, was very impressive. Worked his nuts off and played well. This partnership is the way forward.

Subs:

Moussa 6: Struggled to get in the game, but did his best to cover the left.

Laurent 5: Barely saw the ball and missed a sitter.

Malone 5: Jogged around without a care in the world and gave the ball away. Hopeless.
