Post-Match Thread and Ratings SUFC vs **** Bailey's Team

A performance full of grit and passion, lots of blocks and flying tackles but I would question the defending for both goals which was very poor. Total lack of communication for the winner between Franno and Mildey, shame as they both had good games up till then.

I would also question the 3rd sub and the general disarray of the tactics in

Mildy was great, but the goal was his fault, he anticipated it really well, came out and then changed his mind. From West W it looked like he would definately have got to it. Francis was never going to get to it, but that wasn't his fault, as with 10 men we were continually outnumbered

lts be positive, no way are we going down if we can play like that in half the matches left

Scanell is a waste of space still - cant keep carrying him

You're joking, surely!!! One thing you can't level at Scannell tonight is that he was a passenger. Worked his socks off!!

Clinton Baptiste
Watt- 5, poor, hardly broke sweat.

Same as Scannell, worked extremely hard in a three man midfield following the red card. Can't see how anyone can accuse any player of not giving his all tonight.

Sigh...

Good performance that augurs well for attempts to stay up.

First off, Christophe. All I saw was Bailey hit the ground like a ******** sack of spuds, but everyone around me seemed pretty confident Jeff had made contact. On one hand, Jeff's a moron to react how he did. As a result of the sending off the midfield was stretched to breaking point, and I was never confident of us keeping a clean sheet. However, the guy lamped Bailey, and therefore wins player of the season by default.

Francis was man of the match for me. The defence looked better, aside from M'Voto. A Baldwin/Barret centre-back partnership would make a lot more sense, Tilly. M'Voto is low on form, fitness and confidence. I'm not trying to make him the usual scapegoat when things get tough (Scannell previous occupier of this title), but we can't have him in the team right now.

The Vernon/Paterson partnership showed a lot of promise. The two linked up superbly I felt, Paterson's goal was fortunate, but the strikers tonight were very encouraging.

Gutted at the result, that performance warranted at least a point. Play like that against the lesser teams and we'll be fine.

Just seen highlights on SS News, how on earth did Francis Laurent not finish from two yards after Franno's free kick hit the bar....

-The partneship of Vernon & Paterson, they linked up well together both holding up the ball and winning headers. I think they have the makings of a good partneship. It's the first time, since Barney's departure, I've had confidence in our strikers.

-Baldwin, I will admit as soon as we signed him and Vernon I was very pessimistic bringing two Scum rejects wasn't the most appealing signing's ever made. Despite this Baldwin continues to impress me with his whole hearted display's. A complete contrast to his centre back partner tonight.

-Francis, has he worked on his game defensively?! I was unable to make Norwich but listening on the radio Clarky was commenting on how well he was doing defensively and tonight he impressed me too. To be fair he got done by the ball over the top and Reid's pace but it was a good display.

-The Passion, all the lads looked like they were fighting for the shirt! I can't fault any of there efforts! I just hope these two games haven't taken too much out of them because if we perform like that the rest of the season we'll be fine!

Up the BLUUUUUES!

Wow, someone saw the same game as me. Agree 100% mate

Just seen highlights, when JFC sent off, Baldwin laying into Sodje of Charlton who was in ref's earhole. Great to see his passion tonight for Southend. If we ever pay for a player again, I would gladly sign him.

Scannell simply not good enough

M'voto struggling

Just got back. I thought we were unlucky to not get something out of the game (despite Charlton having two cleared off the line). If we play like that every week till the end of the season, we will be fine.

I didn't see the Bailey decision so can't comment though if JFC did make contact, then he is a silly boy as everyone knows that NB will go down like a sack of potatoes at the first opportunity.

One other thing, I thought opposition fans were banned from the boxes? A nice set of Charlton fans were in Box 7 over the East Greens and were shouting no end of abuse (and were getting no end back!)

Mildenhall - 9 (MOM) - Fantastic and made three great saves
Francis - 8.5 - Had one of those games where he can do no wrong. Unlucky with two free kicks; first one a great save from the keeper and the second one hitting the crossbar.
Mvoto - 7 - Still not fit and caught for the second goal. Best game since his injury however. Had a guilt-edged chance with a header.
Baldwin - 7.5 - Solid, no-nonsense defending
Barrett - 7 - Played well but made a few silly mistakes which left us short at the back.
Scannell - 7.5 - Was everywhere on the pitch defensively but didn't offer us much attacking-wise
JFC - 5 - Played well while he was on the pitch but got stupidly sent off for a clash with Bailey (after we had won a free kick ffs)
Macca - 8.5 - Back to his best tonight and was everywhere. One great, clattering challenge on Bailey summed it up
Watt - 6 - Didn't do a huge amount and didn't look fit to me.
Patterson - 8.5 - Was excellent and worked incredibly hard. Scored a good, if not a tad fortuitous goal
Vernon - 9 - Held the ball up brilliantly and linked excellently with Patterson. Signs of a good partnership forming.

Moussa - 6 - Made no impact
Laurent - 5.5 - Made no impact (and missed a sitter again!)
Malone - 6- Made no impact

Fantastic effort,

Mildy 8 excellent all night although backpedlling for there 2nd
Francis 10 absolutely on fire and we nearly let him go for 175 000
Barrett 9 back to his barnstorming best
Mvoto 4 no thanks, looks slow and cumbersome
Baldwin 7 good organiser and experience
Scannell 7 put in plenty of effort and hard work
Macca 6 negative play puts us in trouble, time to move on
JFC 5 put us in the **** by punching the short fat orange ****
Watt 6 still waiting for him to catch fire
Patterson 8 much better, like the look of him after that
Vernon 9 excellent touch and ability, sign him up!

Anyone else feel like **** after tonight's game?
Understatement. God knows how the lads must feel. I worry that the last two results coupled with all the **** off the field, will be the final straw for some. How Tilly lifts them for a grim trek to Hartlepool next week, is beyond me.

Agree. If Tilson somehow keeps us up, he should be made king of Southend.

Great game - end to end with lots of atmosphere. Gutted to lose but at least we seem to have moved on considerably from the Tranmere shambles.
We were giving Bailey too much room at the start but it settled down. We had the best of the game for the first 60 minutes or so, keeping their many fans incredibly quiet.
Vernon and Paterson were the first striking partnership of this season to show real understanding of each other's play although they lack the final degree of pace. Vernon, in particular, was immense. He provided such a productive outlet and his pass success rate must have been excellent.
Francis was the MOM for me. Having Malone (who was a disappointment when he came on, giving the ball away with alarming regularity) off the pitch for most of the game meant that Francis took almost all of the set plays and he was Beckhamesque in the quality of his deliveries into the box. His defending was excellent too - he was so good at shepherding Reid out wide. and was rarely caught out although he was stranded upfield for the second goal.
I thought Barrett played well but I was surprised by the MoM award because it looked from where I was (at the far end of the pitch) that he had lost his man for their first goal.
M'Voto, even if he did look cumbersome at times and defensively very frail for the second goal, offered a threat in the air - although I can't help thinking that Barrett in central defense and Herd on the left would be better.
Scannell was not hopeless! He defended really well in the first half and was surprisingly good in the air for such a small man. He was taken off at the right time as he was absolutely knackered. Good tactics from Tilly all round in fact - you can't legislate for a ridiculous incident like the sending off.
If Laurent had scored that sitter I wouldn't be saying this...but I did think that he was a bit of a luxury item for a team struggling for its life with only ten men, although he did well to win a corner.
I thought Macca was back at a level close to his best. Mildy and Baldwin played very well and Watt has begun to look the part even though he ran out of energy.
We lost but I'm not too down after seeing the fantastic way that our boys played tonight.

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D Thanks Macca

I can't say enough to say well the lads played tonight. I was told by a very good friend a player earlier this that the players were really up for tonight. I took it with a pinch of salt, but how right they were. Total commitment & guts, especially when down to ten men.

The down side? Further proof that Moussa believes his agents hype about how good he is & that he's better than Div 1. He was yet again clueless, lightweight, lazy & a complete cowardly passenger. Everybody was putting their body on the line & yet he made one tackle all night. He wouldn't track back & wouldn't fight for the cause. Tilly may have got the subs wrong tonight, but he is spot where Moussa is conserned. Maybe Moussa has his dream move set up too!

I struggle to think of too many more ridiculously over-rated players over the past 15 years than Franck Moussa. Particularly ones who have played as many matches as he has.

He's not fit to order Alan McCormack's 3am chicken kebab.

Let me get this out of my system before I start this analysis of our performance...

I honestly didn't believe that I could possibly hate N***y B****y anymore than I already did before the match, but after the match today, I am fuming with his actions on that pitch today. What he did on that pitch today was a f***ing disgrace, to say the very least. From what I saw in the West Stand, JFC went to pick the ball up, and Bailey shoves him, JFC turns round to retaliate, and even though very little (if any) contact was made, Bailey went down like he was shot. JFC was completely unaware that Bailey was trying to cheat in order to gain an advantage, and unfortunately, it worked, and Bailey got away with it, whilst JFC picked up a red card. Still fuming at him as I type this post. Bailey, go and dig a hole and f***ing dive in that, and never come out you pathetic, waste of oxygen.
Rant over, moving swiftly onto more positive stuff...

Considering we were down to 10 men, we played superbly to not only score, but to hold onto that lead for the majority of the match. I am still stunned in how we didn't win that game, and I thoroughly believe that we were more deserving of all three points after today's performance. However, we let in two goals at the end, which we really shouldn't have let in, and the moment that 2nd goal went in, my heart sank big time.

Steve Mildenhall played really well today, made countless of vital saves for us, and was backed up by a solid defence imo.

The defence was quite solid today, with performances from Francis and Barrett standing out for me. Only thing I can fault them for is the fact that we conceded 2 vital goals, but that's about it really.

The midfield played quite well today, with the exception of JFC. Watt had a decent game for us, whilst Scannell continues to impress me. Macca passed the ball about, and made a couple of very good, vital interceptions when we needed them the most.

Matt Paterson and Scott Vernon play really well together, could this be the start of a great partnership up front? Lets hope so! Both had really good games, and were constantly trying to find spaces in the defence which they could expose. Very impressed with them.

Can I take this opportunity to say, that the atmosphere in Roots Hall today was truely fantastic, totally out-sung the Charlton fans, on many occasions. This is the time where our club needs us as fans, to stick together, and unite in supporting Southend, regardless of what is going on off the pitch, regardless of the score, and regardless of how we are playing. Excellent work to all of you fans who backed the club throughout the match.

Unlucky Southend, but if we play like this every match, we will soon be winning our games, and steering ourselves away from the bottom of the table!

UTB!

"I know Steve Tilson's probably come in here and moaned about Nicky Bailey but Christophe's run over and punched Bailey and the only player that Southend management should be disappointed in was their own player.

"When you run 20 yards and punched an opponent, you're off the pitch and when someone that size punches you, you're going to go down.

"Sometimes as a player you're best off going down and then you don't end up having a brawl. So Nick went down. He got punched, and that's it. It was a red card and I think when Steve Tilson sees that in the pictures tonight he can have no complaints.

"Nick ran over and did push a player out of the way and then Christophe's run over and punched him so I thought the ref called that about right. Nicky probably deserved his yellow. But it was also a definite red in my eyes.”

Parkinson, if jeff punched bailey he would be in hospital out cold, bailey is a little prick and a disgrace to football. There are a few players i dont like ie constantine but bailey if he got chopped round his knees and put out for good i would buy whoever did it a few beers.

Great game - end to end with lots of atmosphere. Gutted to lose but at least we seem to have moved on considerably from the Tranmere shambles.
We lost but I'm not too down after seeing the fantastic way that our boys played tonight.

Trouble is can we play like that at Hartlepool away & for the three home games in a row? At the moment we need to score at least 3 goals to win a game.
The crowd for each of the 3 home games will only be around the 6,500 mark, the fans that do go need to keep the noise up, but alot will depend on the players attitude for the next few games which are now far bigger matches for us than the last few.

Barrett, he huffs and puffs, gives 100% but his job is to defend. He switched off for their first goal, lost his man and all of a sudden it's 1-1 and all that hard work counts for nothing.

People openly laughed when he was given MOM. 7 better players in our team than Barrett last night.

Agree with most of your other marks but, although others were to blame beforehand, for the 2nd goal Mildy definitely could have got to the ball first. Big error of judgement there....

The boys gave there all last night with no reward, now they have to gather themselfs and do it all over again, and if they carry on like that the results will come. As a sidenote with that amount of effort from the players, and a near 10,000 gate, i dont want to hear about continued non payment of wages, it just aint on.
