None of the above, for me.

I still don't want a foreign manager, even if it was Pep. It's a total conflict of interest. If Germany beat us in a big game, all the conspiracy theorists will say he wanted Germany to win, and if we won, the german supporters would criticise his loyalty to his country. It's just wrong in my eyes !

Should a club manager have to support the team he manages? What happens if he loses to the team he supports, all the conspiracy theorists will say he wanted them to win, and if we won, the other teams supports would criticise his loyalty to the team he supports…

In an ideal world, probably yes. That's why I like people like Maher as manager. They have a passion for the club. But we're talking about somebody's nationality, not a who they happen to support. Assuming you're English and became a top football manager, would you be happy to coach Germany to beat England in a World Cup match ?

But Maher isn’t a Southend United supporter. He has a passion for the club, but he isn’t a supporter in the same sense we both are.

If that was my job, then of course. I’d rather have the win on my CV than anyone else’s. Tuchel isn’t going to throw a match against Germany, we might not even play them. I don’t recall playing Italy under Capello, but could be wrong. Yes, we may play Germany and we may lose but that won’t because Tuchel throws the game.

Would you rather win the World Cup under Tuchel, or get knocked out in the quarter finals under an English manager?

Honestly, i'd rather go out in the Qtr finals. At least it would have been our players and our coach. I wouldn't want to win, with the help of other countries (especially not one of our closest rivals).

Then we will have to agree to disagree, as quite frankly I don’t get that. I don’t get the mentally of wanting your side to lose.

Was you happy when we beat Ireland and Grealish and Rice, who previously represented Ireland, scored or would you rather someone else scored?

Interesting appointment. An elite level coach, great tactician and one of, if not the, best coaches in knockout football. From a purely pragmatic approach, he’s the best available candidate. Anthony Barry also comes with great pedigree.

I’ll be interested to see how the fans/press take to him. The Daily Mail has already **** the bed with a frankly ridiculous back page (Jeff Powell’s positively frothing at the mouth, and you’d expect no less), and the not insignificant portion of fans who sing about two world wars and one World Cup at every opportunity will be ready to pounce on the earliest misstep.

One of the great elements of the Southgate era was how he was able to unify all of the little factions that fall behind the national team and use them to create a much more supportive environment. Obviously that was hugely helped by winning more than he lost, but Southgate’s character and communication was vital. Will Tuchel be able to do the same?

At 18 months, it’s a short commitment from both sides. It could be strategically timed so the FA can take stock and see who else might be available if the World Cup isn’t delivered - suggestions Guardiola will sign a 1-year extension in the coming weeks.

It is, however, an enormous shift from the development model that Ashworth et al set more than a decade ago. The FA appear now to be throwing the kitchen sink at someone capable of possibly hauling a “golden generation” over the line, rather than establishing a long-term vision for the game. We’ve been here before, and it hasn’t worked out.
i worry about this too. where I work we constantly rush from one golden ticket to another and we're in a right mess as a result. that's partly why I think it's wrong, but I maintain managers as well as players should be eligible for that nation. at every level. i also think women should manage women's teams for the same reason

This, I'm afraid to say (because I think you're a really good poster otherwise) is a bit of a weak and losing mentality. You're very definitely not the only person who thinks this way, and I just can't get my head around it, but to each their own!
