I was also standing on the North bank that day, I can remember Gary sitting in the net laughing along with the crowd. It really was an increadible miss

Red faced he was Billy, but I don't think he was laughing. It was one hell of a miss though, that it should be so well remembered more than 40 years later and have been the subject of previous thread discussions.

But after the miss....

I was on the North Bank too and after his miss he played like an absolute demon and put things right with a gola and an assist. \

Mildenhall and Francis? :stunned:

Simon Francis reminds me of a lower league version of Vedran Corluka at Spurs.

Has the look and technique of a classy player, good passer of the ball, good going forwards, can ping good crosses into the box, good in the air.

However, seems to do everything at the same pace, and is prone at least once or twice in the match to switch off at a crucial moment.

Your choice, obviously, but surely Prudhoe would be in with a shout?

Thinking about it, David Morley too

Prudhoe, again, short-lived.

Morley was not as bad as Ben Lewis or Chris Perkins!! I still recall Lewis being substitued at Grimsby after 25-odd minutes. We were 3-0 down and all the goals were his fault.

Agree with much of what you say, but his positive contribution to the team far outweighs his negative attributes, surely?

No one has mentioned another player dubbed 'the future of Southend' Michael Husbands who spent almost a season out with an injury to his bottom.

An entertaining thread! but mildenhall francis and Maher in our all time rubbish eleven?
you've obviously been watching a different Southend team then i have the last 20 odd years!!!

And any rubbish 11 not including Morley is clearly not admissable....

Francis is so harsh.

I dont think he (or Hammell) were great defenders by any means but they both werent that bad either. I think that Francis going forward on his day was a sight to be hold. I seem to recall he destroyed Ipswich at Portman Road almost on his own.

Midly i never rated her he was better than Embersom, Margetson, Capelton, Gay, Prudhoe, etc to name but a few.
