I agree it's not imperative to make early signings - but I think you'd agree it's desirable.
Yes, it's still possible to get free transfers at any time, I know the rules, but if a player is on a free in the middle of the season, you'd have to ask why?
And you offering one example of a good player with no massive wage demands on a free would be equally desirable.
I agree with the desirability to make some signings early, without a doubt. Especially if a team can improve on their perceived weaker positions first, to improve the overall strength of their squad.

An example, sure.

Now bear in mind, this is the principle of being able to improve a team, not directly related to SUFC, well not this SUFC as you will see, via a free transfer signing, when the season is well under way.

I give you a good player, with league pedigree, well known here, purely by coincidence and at this level if you needed a defensive midfielder.......Alex Woodyard, who Steve Morison signed for Sutton United on the 4th January.

Straight into their starting line up, bolstered their midfield and might just be one ingredient why today they are surprisingly 2 up at a top three side in York City today.
