So, here we go then, an FA Cup First Round game at Roots Hall against one of the bigger clubs in the competition at this stage, League One Charlton Athletic.

The Addicks are managed by our former left back, Nathan Jones (he’s been gone too long) and currently sit mid-table in League One. The recent form is not that great with only one win from their last six league games, a 1-0 win at home to Birmingham which followed three successive defeats. They have however drawn their last three league games and beat Chelsea U-21s 3-0 in the National League Trophy on Tuesday night (Carl Leaburn's son, Miles, scored the first 2 goals). This may have given our management team an opportunity to view some of their fringe players who may feature at Roots Hall with Jones making 10 changes to the starting XI for that game compared with the players that started against Wrexham at the Valley last Saturday that snatched a 2-2 draw thanks to Matty Godden’s penalty in the 7th minute of second half stoppage time. Daniel Kanu was not in the starting XI or on the bench for either game which would suggest he's probably injured.

Whichever team Charlton put out on Saturday it's hard to believe that they won't provide a sterner test for us than a very poor Tamworth team did last Saturday. Kev usually plays his cards close to his chest as to which players are available for any games and with the FA Cup this guardedness extends to the availability of loan players. Pepple and Moncur (if fit) should be OK to be involved as both featured against Eastleigh in the previous round, at the time of writing we've not heard if Taylor Foran's loan from Bromley has been extended and if so if he's allowed to play, and the other loanee is Zach Jeacock whose availability is also unknown.

It was good to see Cav Miley come off the bench last Saturday as he's been such a pivotal player for us since joining the club. Whether he is fit enough to start on Saturday and if so who should give up their place for him is an interesting conundrum. The strike pairing of Pepple and Bonne seems to have potential and it's hard to believe that Macauley won't be fired up to break his duck for us against one of his former clubs - Bonne had a couple of spells with the Addicks and scored 14 goals during his time at the Valley.

We're sure to have a bumper crowd on Saturday, especially if the North West corner can be opened to increase the capacity on completion of the upgrading works and an inspection from the Safety Advisory Group. This game should be a welcome injection of cash into the club and shows the value of a cup run.

A lot of us will travel to Roots Hall more in hope than expectation, however the same was true on 7th November 2006 and we all know what happened then! However it's a sad state of affairs that there are now more league places between us and Charlton than there were between us and Manchester United that night (thanks Ron!).

Let's be loud and proud on Saturday and get behind the boys and see what happens.

So who would you choose to start and what do you predict the result will be?

With super cav miley back does he automatically go back into the team.
My heart says yes because I love him and want him to adopt me.
My head says no....we're on a mini run and those players that have the shirt deserve it at the moment.
Thoughts?

It’s an FA Cup game and we have a recent track record (definitely pre Maher) of rushing players back. 2-3 games required for me before he starts.

Even if he was match fit he wouldn’t be straight into the team, especially on form as we are, the only question mark I’d have is maybe taking Noor out but then I’d stick KAF in, Morton has to stay in and he’s first name on the team sheet

People that genuinely think Miley should walk back into the team baffle me. Werent exactly at his best before he got injured. Plus we are 4 unbeaten and not conceded a goal. On that form no one has the right to walk straight into the team.
Would say he had been carrying an injury for several weeks. Somehow, Kevin has to find a way of playing both at some point in the future.

I love Cav: fully fit I think he’s the best defensive midfielder in the VNL by a long way. A Rolls Royce at this level. However he needs time to get fit. Properly fit. He hasn’t been the same player since his injury last season; I have no idea why, but if a longer rest and rehabilitation is needed then let’s give him that. Morton is on fire at the moment - National League’s Pirlo; sitting deep and spraying the ball all over the park, for fun. He doesn’t deserve to be dropped and he does give us a progressive dimension to our play that Cav doesn’t.

So, as much as I want Cav back in the XI, I’ve voted “no”… let’s give him a 3 or 4 weeks to considerately integrate him back to full match fitness and into the squad. Then it’s a headache Maher has to solve…

I'll merge this into the pre-match thread when it gets posted soon.... this is probably the main selection headache for Kev, as well as 'keeper if Collin is fit and Jeacock allowed to be cup tied.

i just hope fans are realistic about this one. i think a few have let the optimism go to their heads. it's not impossible we'll win, but it would be a massive shock. i'm going for the atmosphere/to get away from the wife for a bit

SOUTHEND United midfielder Oli Coker is keen to sample his own FA Cup magic this weekend.

Coker remains a keen fan of the competition having watched it during his youth.

And he now wants to experience the buzz the cup can bring himself by helping Blues beat League One side Charlton Athletic at Roots Hall on Saturday.

“The FA Cup really does mean a lot,” said Coker.

“I have a lot of memories watching the FA Cup as a younger lad.

“It’s a prestigious cup so hopefully we can have a good run and show what we are about.

“I’m really buzzing for Saturday and it’s most probably going to be a sell out so Roots Hall will be buzzing too.

“There will be a great atmosphere so I’m looking forward to it.”

The Shrimpers, who sit 14th in the National League, will be underdogs for the first round tie against League One opposition.

But Coker cannot wait to face Nathan Jones’ team.

“It’s very exciting,” said Coker.

“It’s going to be a tough game but we are ready for the test.

“They will be a well drilled side doing well in League One so we have to be ready and on it from the start.”

Blues head into the game unbeaten in their last four outings.

And Coker felt Saturday’s 2-0 win against Tamworth again showed the progress being made by the Shrimpers.

“It was another step in the right direction,” said Coker.

“I felt like we were pretty dominant with the ball in the first half and dealt with the pressure in the second half to see the game out well.

“We could have also had a few more goals but overall it was a positive performance and hopefully we can take it into Saturday now.”

Coker will also be looking to build on his performance against Tamworth.

And the 21-year-old was delighted to work his way back onto the score-sheet for the first time since returning from an ankle injury.

“I’m very pleased,” said Coker.

“It was a good move with I think 31 passes in the end.

“We ended up picking them off and scoring which was great.

“It wasn’t the cleanest strike of mine but I will definitely take it.

“I’m very pleased to get among the goals and hopefully a few more can start going in for me.”

But, despite the recent upturn, Coker is not getting carried away.

“I wouldn’t say we’ve turned a corner, we just had a bit of tough period,” said the midfielder.

“We haven’t changed much but we have stuck to our principles and we have a few wins to show for it.

“We have to keep this up now, keep working hard and the results will follow I’m sure.”

It's a free game just to have a go.

Some of our players will not have played league opposition before. A good test for them

As for the team. Morton deserves to start. Up top id stick with bonne and Pebble. They looked a decent pertnership. Bring walker on against tired legs.

It would be nice to see more from Husin who has been off the pace the last few games.

Hope that win lose or draw, the team can just enjoy a game away from the league

I'd keep the same starting 11 that beat Tamworth.

Bridge and Husin looked more like their old selves. Morton deserves his place.

Subs:

Cav and KAF for Cokes and Husin.

Walker to come on for Bim / Bonne against tiring defenders.

Big question for me is the keeper - our Collin or loanee Zack?
