If Antonio Ferdinand wanted was a mercenary fat cat he would have signed for my next door neighbour and would be defiling my hardy perennials with his 'business'

I am definitely in the "Great sigining" camp. Also my Wet Sham supporting mate, who has watched him in the flesh a lot more than some of the people commenting on his ability here, reckons he is better in the air that Rio and reads the gasme just as well. Also a threat at attacking set pieces, if we can get the ball past the first defender from corners.

A good spine in a team is essential. And we are starting to get that. I am confident in an upturn in form once injuries are over for certain players and let's wait and see what else happens before the transfer window closes.

welcome Anton and enjoy the season, I am fully confident in your contribution to an upturn in our fortunes.

It might be too late for Brown by then. I'd be surprised if he has more than a few games to save his job and with Bolton, Scunthorpe & Millwall up next we could very well be bottom in a few weeks.

AF is a good signing for us, at last some better quality ! Think he will add a lot experience that we are sadly lacking at the moment. Considering all thats going on at the club just now the signing was a coup !!

I must confess that I have never seen Antonio Ferdinand play football - although I have heard of the band that features many of his family ........ and there is Kane Ferdinand of course.

Anyway, back on theme ........... I spoke to a Sunderland supporting colleague and he quite simply laughed when I told him of our new signing. A couple of things he said were "he can't defend and he can't run - it's like he's stuck in treacle".

I look forward to sticking a couple of comments in his direction when Anton gets to be part of a team that is heading up the league ..............

What I'm most pleased about is the fact that I would expect someone of that much top-flight experience to be able to come in and not only lead by example but also play a big part in organising our shocking back-line. It's shameful that we concede so many goals from dead balls when we have a manager and assistant who were BOTH defenders during their playing careers.

All concerned with bringing this about deserve a lot of credit in my book. The general consensus as far as I can tell was that Ferdinand played very well for Reading but had bad luck with injuries. This adds a ton of quality where it's much needed and allows us to manage the workload of Barrett.

I'd advise some of those seeking to portray a signing like this in a negative light to beware the dangers of lapsing into self-parody.

With Anton Ferdinand signing after leaving Reading, there seems to a pattern forming.

We also signed Simon Cox from Reading, which just leaves Hal Robson-Kanu who left Reading, and it still without a club. We've got two, we might as well make it three!

Could be a great signing but I would have rather got two 6'3-6'4 center halves who have played lower league football before.

Anton Ferdinand will surely be a big upgrade on the two Adams. I wonder if he is a Ron signing (Eastwood, Barnard, Freedman) or is he Phil Brown's choice?

This man keeps getting better and better for us.
IMO he has been pivotal in our improvement and is, at present, irreplaceable from among the squad we have.
I have fingers and toes crossed that he ......................................
Sorry I can't write the words for fear of jinx.

When I see Anton play I see a defender who rarely moves out of position when defending. Thompson (and Demmy and Timin) can track a player as they move away from the penalty box but Anton just leaves the player and comes back into position. Surely it can't be as simple as that, can it?

He is absolute quality.

Positional sense, game management, making sure players are picked up and so on.

The key with him is that whenever a ball is played forward, he is just always in the right place at the right time.

Rarely flustered, yet totally in control.

His influence on Oxley and Thompson cannot be under-estimated either.

... and at the end of the match, he always does the tour around the pitch to thank the fans.

Seems like the club really means something to him.

Fantastic bit of business, that.

I also have noticed that about his positional sense. Also, not much gets past him, he's rock solid. It's also great because it's like having another Manager on the pitch. The other players can take a rollicking off another player when they have upmost respect for him as a player and as a person. He started off by not celebrating our goals, but now you can see he's well settled in, and likes to be part of the celebration.

Ferdy was class yesterday, makes the game look easy and rarely panics,we were very impressed by him and thought he nicked mom, only just.

Pre-AF we were leaking goals left, right and centre at set pieces - he has made a huge impact, any corner or free kick you can see him marshalling the players, who to mark, who are the danger men etc..

For me that has been one of the major benefits plus as mentioned the improvement of players like Thompson (surely not far from a recall to the NI squad?) and Oxley, now confident and arguably a decent replacement for Bentley.

Clearly you didn't see the appalling back header which unnecessarily put Ted into terrible trouble minutes into his recall.

Very similar to Efe's unforced error very early on against the half breds, which pretty much sealed our relegation.

If it had been Cureton rather than Poleon on the receiving end you would have been saying very different things about Ferdy.
