If you told me at the end of last season that next season we'd have Anton Ferdinand, Simon Cox and Nile Ranger in the squad, I'd have had a right old chuckle at you. Fantastic signing.

I'm assuming Cox played a part in convincing him to join. Notice Anton mentioned him scoring for us on Twitter. I'll add my voice to those saying a fantastic signing!

Great signing, welcome aboard Anton.

2 points to note, firstly all these random shirt numbers are setting off the inner ocd in me, and secondly... he could have put some socks on for the occasion.

I believe he wears 35 a lot. Sure he had it at Reading when he joined.

Bet he was well impressed today, although he probably was delighted as it wont take much to get in the side.

To be honest i think AF will need at least 2 to 3 weeks to come up to grade. After today he most likely thnks he can do it overnight.

I hope to be proved very wrong, but I'm not thrilled about this one. We're likely to be spending big money (for us) here and have acquired a player who has been accused of lacking bottle / not being up for it at a number of clubs in his career. Don't doubt that he has the ability to be an excellent player for us, suspect he won't have the desire.

At this level that's a good signing. I just hope the fans give him a little time because I'm sure he will need it considering he has been without a club for a short while. Let's give him a good welcome!

It maybe but it does not solve the lack of height in Southend's backline.

Should fit in well with today's team!

It's been said many times by many other posters on SZ in the past..... Lack of height isn't the "be all & end all" qualities of a defender.

There's been many world class defenders over the years that have been 6ft or under.

Kyle Walker, Jamie Carragher, Nathaniel Clyne, Des Walker, Gary Neville, Phil Jagielka, Gareth southgate, Stuart Pearce, Glen Johnson, Danny Rose, Danny Blind, Fabio Cannavaro & Carlos Poyul.. to name but a few.

Lol, bumped into him in the tunnel, Tims was showing him around and introducing him to people! Had to distract the hubby!

Glad to hear it. Good Work!!

I'm Imagining the Echo headlines.. "New signing.. Anton Ferdinand out for 3 weeks, due to an unfortunate incident in the tunnel"

& CP Tweeting.. It was kinda odd.. Mrs OBL was meeting and greeting our new star signing, & all was good and well, then all of a sudden Anton tripped on a random bottle of beer, and it injured him, twice in the face, once in the kidneys, and his spleen is some where in the car park!!

I'm not saying you're not right in what you say about height, however I would argue that you are being incredibly generous by stating that the players listed were or are "world class" - to my mind only the two in bold can be considered to be of that level.

I sincerely hope that Anton Ferdinand didn't watch today's game and then rip up the paperwork...:stunned::stunned::'(

I'm loving your dry sense of humour!
