ADAM Crowther and George Moncur were both left out of Southend United's squad for the Boxing Day win against Ebbsfleet United.

Centre-back Crowther had started the previous 23 matches for the Shrimpers while midfielder Moncur had started two of the last four.

But neither player was called upon at Roots Hall yesterday.

"We went with what we felt was the right mix for what the team needed today," said Blues boss Kevin Maher after the game.

"James Golding brought us that composure on the ball and you can only have seven on the bench.

"It's very rare that everyone is fit so those who weren't in the squad need to train properly tomorrow and be ready when called upon."

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher heaped praise on James Golding and Charley Kendall following their first starts for the Shrimpers.

Defender Golding and striker Kendall both impressed during Blues’ 4-0 win at Roots Hall.

And Maher was quick to praise their performances.

“I thought they both did ever so well for their first starts,” said the Shrimpers head coach.

"Charley gave us that energy up top, he was pressing and closing down.

"I wanted Charley to get a goal but I'm pleased with his work-rate and effort.

“We want him to score but he's got an assist.

"He might have had one in the first half when he's got in and been held back.

“But you can see what he can bring and he's done well.

“He adds to what we've got."

And Maher was also happy with how Golding, who is on loan from Oxford United, fitted in at the heart of the back three.

"I was really pleased with him,” said Maher.

“He gave us that composure on the ball to make us play at the right times which we've been missing a little bit."

Golding will now be bidding for more of the same against Braintree Town on New Year’s Day.

And Maher hinted he could look to keep the defender beyond his initial short-term loan.

"It's something we're talking about with him but it's one game and I thought he did well," Maher added.

Comfortable win - Southend United beat Ebbsfleet United 4-0 at Roots Hall (Image: FOCUS IMAGES)

By Chris Phillips@cjphillips1982Chief sports reporter

SOUTHEND United recorded their biggest win of the season at Roots Hall this afternoon, beating rock-bottom Ebbsfleet 4-0.

Bim Pepple bagged a brace for Blues while Oli Coker and Gus Scott-Morriss were also on target as Kevin Maher’s side added to the festive celebrations with a comfortable victory in front of a crowd of more than 8,000 fans.

The Shrimpers took just seven minutes to open the scoring, with Coker on target for the fifth time this season.

A right wing cross from Scott-Morriss was not dealt with by the opposition defence and that enabled Jack Bridge to tee up the on-rushing Coker who scored with a powerful shot from just inside the penalty area.

Moments later, a deflected effort from Noor Husin landed on top of the North Bank net before the Shrimpers came even closer to doubling their lead when James Golding brought the ball out of defence before teeing up Charley Kendall.

However, the striker’s low shot was impressively saved down to his left hand side by Ebbsfleet goalkeeper Mark Cousins before a deflected left footed shot from Pepple went just wide of the right post.

Blues threatened again on the stroke of half-time when Kendall raced goalside of Cordner before stretching to send a shot straight at Cousins while under pressure from the recovering defender.

The Shrimpers screamed for a penalty following the scruffy looking challenge from Cordner but referee Alan Dale opted to wave play on.

However, Southend were not to be denied a second goal for long and doubled their lead just seconds before the break when Coker rolled the ball into the path of Pepple who turned sharply before sending a powerful right footed shot high into the top right hand corner of the net.

After the break, Golding saw a goalbound effort blocked in front of goal before Pepple’s header Miley’s left wing free-kick was easily kept out by Cousins.

But Blues stayed on top and made it 3-0 in the 54th minute when Kendall did superbly down the right hand side before delivering a fine cross Pepple smashed into the roof of the net from close range for his 10th goal of the season.

Scott-Morriss then saw a looping effort pushed wide of the right post by Cousins but the resulting corner from Coker found Scott-Morriss who sent an accurate header into the top right hand corner of the net.

A hat-trick hunting Pepple soon saw his curling 25 yard shot pushed wide of the right post by Cousins who then also smothered a low effort from Kendall.

With Southend pushing for more goals, Bridge fired over from 25 yards after a bright burst forward from the left hand side before the hosts opted to change their front two in the 70th minute.

Macauley Bonne and Josh Walker entered the action in place of Pepple and Kendall before the Shrimpers made another double change in the 81st minute with Joe Gubbins and Keenan Appiah-Forson replacing Bridge and Noor Husin.

James Morton then also took the place of Cav Miley in midfield to help the hosts see out the closing stages of a comfortable afternoon.

Home victory - for Southend United boss Kevin Maher (Image: Lucy Copsey)

27th December.

KEVIN Maher thought Southend United looked more like themselves during their Boxing Day win against Ebbsfleet United.

The Shrimpers triumphed 4-0 at Roots Hall to secure their biggest victory of the season so far.

And Maher was full of praise for the display.

“I'm delighted with the result and the performance because I thought we played ever so well,” said the Blues boss.

“We looked like us, we looked like what we know us to be.

"We haven't scored enough goals this season, that's pretty obvious.

"But we work on stuff and to see it play out is really nice.

"We could have had one or two more but their keeper has made some great saves I have to say."

The victory moved Blues 14th in the National League standings.

But Maher stressed the result could not be taken for granted, despite Ebbsfleet sitting at the foot of the table.

"People will look at Ebbsfleet's league position and think we should just walk all over them but that's not the case,” said Maher.

"Credit to Josh (Wright) and Kers (David Kerslake) for how they've set up.

"We got goals at important times but once they get going and they get into them they'll make them way more difficult to beat.

"You can see there's moments in games when they can be a threat too.

"It was never going to be easy.

"They're well organised but it was nice to see us back to ourselves."

And Maher felt the midfield trio of Oli Coker, Cav Miley and Noor Husin were key in making that happen.

"Cav, Noor and Oli Coker in midfield I thought were all outstanding,” said the Blues boss.

“We're still work in process because there has been a lot of change.

“There's been changes behind the scenes people probably haven't seen.

“There's a new way of working at times with certain things but it felt like more like us today and the engine room in midfield was probably a big part of that.

“But we move on and put that to bed now."

The Shrimpers are next in action at Braintree Town on New Year’s Day.

Happy - Southend United wing-back Gus Scott-Morriss (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips@cjphillips1982Chief sports reporter

GUS Scott-Morriss swapped one Christmas stuffing for another after helping Southend United thrash Ebbsfleet 4-0 at Roots Hall.

The popular wing-back scored the Shrimpers' final goal of the game in their biggest victory of the season so far.

And Scott-Morriss celebrated his 10th goal of the campaign by showing his stomach!

"I was showing off my Christmas dinner a bit," laughed Scott-Morriss.

"I love my celebrations but it was a relief to score this one to begin with before I remembered the Christmas dinner had to come out.

"It wasn’t the Christmas charades or anything like that.

"I got 'when Santa came down the chimney' for that and I wasn’t very good so I couldn’t repeat that.

"It was just about my dinner!"

The victory moved Blues 14th in the National League standings.

And Scott-Morriss was delighted to get back to winning ways.

"We’re really pleased," said the 27-year-old.

"I think we needed that as a team and probably as a club as well.

"There’s been a bit of confidence lacking around the building and that can happen sometimes but today we showed what we’re about.

"We really expressed how good we can be but now we need to kick on."

The Shrimpers will now be aiming for another win when they head to Braintree Town on New Year's Day.

And Scott-Morriss will make the short trip on a high after scoring his first goal since September.

"It was probably my favourite one of the season," said Scott-Morriss.

"I couldn’t stop scoring at the start of the season but then had a bit of a goal drought which does start to play on your mind a bit.

"It was more relief to see it go in and I’m really happy to be on 10 goals before January."

Oli Coker joined also netted for the Shrimpers along with Bim Pepple who scored twice.

And that means the on loan Luton Town forward is now level on goals with Scott-Morriss.

"I tell him he can't let me be top goalscorer," laughed Scott-Morriss.

"That's what he says but I told him it's only league goals that count!

Scott-Morriss' goal was the final effort scored by the Shrimpers in 2024.

And he believes it has been a good 12 months for the club.

"It’s been a positive year for the football club whether that’s results on the pitch or what’s happened off it," said Scott-Morriss.

"We’ve been through the ups and downs together and the fans have been through the whole lot.

"To come out of 2024 with a new consortium and heading in the right direction is a plus point."

Enjoying his football - on loan Southend United defender James Golding (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips@cjphillips1982Chief sports reporter.

JAMES Golding will not need to look too far for inspiration as he strives to build on his impressive full debut for Southend United.

The centre-back, who is on loan at the Shrimpers from Oxford United, produced a fine performance at the heart of the back three to help Kevin Maher’s side beat Ebbsfleet 4-0 on Boxing Day.

But 20-year-old Golding is not the only member of his family bidding to break through into the senior ranks.

James’ 18-year-old brother Michael joined Leicester City from Chelsea in a deal believed to be around £4 million last summer while his 16-year-old brother Aidan is on the books of Brentford.

And Golding finds the support of his family hugely beneficial.

“Growing up we’d always play against each other and help each other too,” said the defender.

“Obviously now we’re living in different parts of the country but we speak a lot and support each other.

“It’s good to have people, especially your brothers, involved in the same industry and it definitely helps.”

James is currently leading the way in terms of first team appearances and is relishing adding to his tally while at Roots Hall.

“I’ve really been enjoying it,” said Golding.

“It’s a good club with a lot of good people.

“Hopefully I can keep playing now and keep on contributing to the team.”

Golding made his Southend debut as a late substitute in the 5-3 FA Trophy win over Brentwood Town at the start of December before being before handed his first start against Ebbsfleet.

And the defender relished his first taste of playing at Roots Hall.

“As a footballer you always want to play in front of fans,” said Golding.

“It’s what you dream of as a kid and to play in front of the fans at Roots Hall is a great feeling.

“Hopefully they’ll be many more to come as well.”

The convincing victory moved Blues 14th in the table and Golding was pleased with all aspects of the performance.

“As a defender you want to keep a clean sheet and I think everyone in the team stepped up,” said Golding.

“There might be bigger tests to come but we showed that when we play like that I don’t think we need to fear anyone in this league.”

The Shrimpers will now look to make it back to back wins when they head to Braintree Town on New Year’s Day.

And Golding’s main focus will again be on shutting out the opposition.

“First and foremost I’m a defender and that’s my main job,” said Golding.

“Where I can help the team in terms of possession I do like to try and contribute but I’m a defender at heart.

“Braintree will be a tough test but we just have to focus on what we can do and try to make sure we perform to the best of our ability.”

Golding will again be looking to help the Shrimpers triumph and admitted he would be happy to extend his loan spell.

“It’s a short term loan so I can’t 100 per cent tell you how long I’m going to be here but I’m loving it at the club and I’d be very happy to stay,” said Golding.

“I just want to play as many minutes as possible and play to the best of my ability to help the team.”

Sorry if a bit off topic but didn't want to start a thread for it.... does anyone know if it's possible to get a couple of programmes for the Ebbsfleet match ? Do the club keep them in the shop or office? Or if anyone has one they don't want to keep, I'm happy to pay for it ? Thanks.
