Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-4 Charlton Athletic

Kev stated that the pitch is heavy and tiring. The pitch has settled down and looks good to me, flat and with even bounce. If is heavy why is it still being watered so much, shouldn't need the water atm imo.

Well they have set a benchmark on whats to be expected from here in. i was spot on apart from the score in my prematch thread ,they gave the supporters a match to remember and sent everyone home happy, now hopefully they will use that performance as a stepping stone for the rest of the season. Great turnout also and from Charlton was great to see hardly an empty seat in the stadium . Long may it continue ,grass roots football is alive . Magic of the FA CUP and those tossers from the FA and those so called elite clubs want to ruin it for the small clubs absolutely despicable .

Probably because the team haven't been playing such great attacking fast moving football, it's been mainly boring slow, sideways backwards. The Charlton game was exciting and encouraged better support.
Totally with you on this one.
For “boring, slow, sideways backwards” you could have said “playing out from the back”.
If what Boywonder2 said was correct, namely that this is our style now, then sadly games like Saturday will only come along once in a blue moon.
I just hope Kev doesn’t link the style we played against Charlton with the fact that we lost.
For me and many like me, it was pure entertainment and in the NL we would win far more games than we would lose, playing like that.

But we still played out from the back on Saturday.

We played how we normally played, but played it better. It helped that Charlton, at no stage, sat in and made it difficult for us. They looked to go forward at all times, which meant there was space to play through it.

Also, the fact we were 0-2 down, and then got the get out of jail free card with the Taylor handball/missed one-on-one/missed follow up, then within a minute we had a penalty and went into the break 1-2 with our tails up helped too.

What we are seeing now is more time on the training pitch. When you play Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, you have a lot of recover time when you aren’t on the training pitch coaching, going through patterns of play etc.

Now we have reached a stage where we have had one game a week, and with players returning, we are seeing an improvement.
