Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-2 Hartlepool

thought grant was gash today laurent needs to be offered a long contract and with maccas shooting at the mo he should have thanked mooooooos for nicking the ball, thought macca done well

Seen the highlights, must say Macca's hassling for our 2nd goal was superb, wasn't just an assist, he practically made the goal for Barney.

As for Hartlepool's 1st, was a woeful cushion header from Macca to Grant, who clearly wasn't expecting it, but Grant did dither on the ball rather than put his foot through it, probably in shock from the hospital ball he had just received.

There was an article in the programme by I believe our own Hawkwell Blue about the Newport game in 1977 which we won 4-2 from a 2-0 deficit. How ironic that much the same scenario was enacted this afternoon. Superb cross from Scannell for Barney's winner.

And if the rumour is true we are no longer under an embargo, hopefully Tilly will be able to freshen the squad in January.

Ah, just call me prophetic, think that's the word!

someone likes the sound of their own voice

Cant give you rep which clearly means I agree with you too much. Make do with this. Funny

just looked at the highlights. Fantastic entertainment. Confirmed what I thought at the time about the first. Grants mistake no question the "pathetic cushioned header" gave him the clear opportunity to whack it up field and as the commentator said her dithered. Laurent's header fantastic, what a great game he had. Macca's harrying for the second brilliant and well done Damien Scannell.
PS aren't Sundays great when we win

Read the first 4-5 pages and then gave up.

Only on this board can a match report thread turn into a major discussion about two team mates getting passionate about their performances.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the sort of altercation Macca and Moussa had. It shows they cared and it was that passion and determination that enabled us to come back from 2-0 down.

At 3-2, there was a throw in to Hartlepool in front of the west stand. They were trying to push forward to get the equaliser. Their guy threw it short to Boyd, who laid it back appallingly straight into touch.

Not one of their players said a word or raised an eyebrow.

Did they care? Were they bothered? Who had the will to win that game, because they certainly didn't.

Jesus we should be congratulating Macca for his determination to create the all important equaliser and for having the balls to berate his team mates when they aren't up to standard. He is a more senior pro than most of them and should be respected as such. If Barrett for instance has a mare it doesn't stop him leading, as he's the captain. And for anyone to berate him is insubordinate - he's the leader.

At pro level what happens on the pitch pretty much stays on the pitch, but if it doesn't I don't think you'll find managers being too bothered. It instills passion, fight and drive. They'd much rather someone react than shrink and fade.

In my opinion it made Moussa better yesterday.

Well done Macca.

Just seen the goals, definitly Grants fault for the 1st. Should have put his foot through it. I thought Morrison could have don a lot better for the second, I know the ball seems to arrive really quickly at his feet, but i'd expect more from a pro footballer in that situation. Still, he's only young.

Nice header from Francis Laurent, still couldn't tell if it was over the line or what. Good hustling by McCormack for the second, and a great cross from Scannell for thr 3rd (**** poor defending on both counts really)

The thing is, Macca in many peoples opinion, has been way below par
both last season and this season. Yes he may be a senior player, but it's very hypocritical for someone to berate others around him, if he himself is/has not been performing well of late.

It's also not the first time Macca has gone radio at a team-mate, and probably won't be the last. When he's encouraging/driving/inspiring fair enough. When he's whinging like a little kid because someone else had the shot instead of him, then he needs to sort his attitude out. Berating a team mate for taking a shot, instead of leaving it for him (the world reknowned long range master) is ridiculous

just saw the highlights to. at the game i thought macca was at fault for their first goal but oh my god what the hell is grant doing. completely his fault.

What a load of rubbish this thread is. There's 10 minutes of my life I'll never get back. I don't particularly care who was at fault for the first goal, as a unit we are not solid enough and make too many silly mistakes like that. Laurent deserves a lot of praise and impressed the once a season wonders I sat with yesterday, but his final ball still needs a lot of work. I can't have been the only one thinking we really missed Simon Francis in the first half - Christophe's reluctance to get the ball into the box was maddening.

That's the negatives out of the way, on the plus side the character of the side - not just to come back from 2-0 down but to do it on the back of three defeats and with no Southend player having scored from open play in 8 games - was extremely impressive. McCormack was out of hand for the second goal, that's exactly what we need him doing. And a little mention for the centre backs, Morrison is just 18 and was completely dominant today, Barrett did what he needed to do and inspired the team when things were flat by getting the crowd going with his trademark bursts from the back. Great second half display.

Mackay does have a tendency to have a go at his team mates on the pitch. IMO it is his will to win that makes him do this...I do not condone it and he has had some crap games this year so should be careful of blaming others.

He just needs to strike the right balance and certainly with younger players that need a quiet word and a boost rather than a tongue lashing.

I dont usually post on the match report threads, but i would like to say a few things.

Firstly Christoph was great at right back. Maybe he has finally found his place in the team. Stayed when he needed to and went forward to support when required.
He also remembered the most important thing in that position and that is to defend. He won pretty much everything that came down that channel and played some decent balls in. Take note Simon Francis.

Morrison. Is he really just 18 as he doesnt look it. The boy is going to be some player. Very strong in the tackle and positive on the ball. Made the odd lapse at times , but he is still so young with so much to learn. A real player in the making.

Laurent. He beats players with such ease that it makes you almost feel sorry for them. My one critisism of him is that he needs to be more direct and create a little more. A player of his quality should score 10+ goals a season like gower used to.

Scannell. I real old fashioned winger display from Damian today . Done exaclty what was required showed for the ball beat his man and created a chance which was scored by Barney.

A decent allround performance just a shame that we cant play more often with the attacking purpose we showed when 2-1 down. As soon as it went 2-2 there was a considerable drop in attacking play.

Finally the support. Good support today. A week before christmas and with Hartlepool bringing what looked like about 100 fans a seasons low was on the cards , but 7700 is a great show of support.

Totally agree with all of this. IMO the problems we have with not breaking down defences at home is a too slow a build up.
Proved it today when we were quicker to brake after 1/2 time but not temted into the long ball. This is how we need to play more often IMO.

About time we had some proper ratings on a match thread. Looks like OBL will be first on the team sheet next week - 13/10!

Thought we were by far the better side and thoroughly deserved the win. Am a big fan of Granty but he was caught dithering for the first goal. Also agree Macca hasn't been at his best but fantastic harrying by him for the equaliser. Laurent was also impressive first half just the end product is inconsistent , to be fair though he set Barny up for a sitter. Well done too for Scannell when he came on. JFC did a fair job at full back and well done too to Morrison , solid game.

Laurent sounded good on the commentary but looked absolutely incredible on the highlights. Nice to be able to watch the highlights with some enthusiasm again, rather than forcing myself to look at it, as I have done recently.....................looking forward to seeing the extended version.
