Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-2 Hartlepool

Well, what a fantastic comeback that was.

To be honest, I felt we was the best team from start to finish and its just the way our luck had been recently to be 2-0 down at half time. They only had two attacks in the first half, and not an awful lot more throughout the game.

We where up for it from the start, but we shot ourselves in the foot for the first goal. My mate instantly blamed Macca for it, and I said Grant wasn't overly impressive for it and I think that is about right. Both at fault for it. Silly "cushioned header" to Grant when he was under pressure, and Granty should have put his foot through it. Grant was unlucky on the second goal trying to clear it and steering a tame effort past Mildenhall.

Second half we upped it slightly and got our rewards for it. Laurent was unplayable and I bet their left back is going to be having nightmares about him, and Scannell when he came on for many a week. Macca made up for his part in their first goal, with some fantastic pressure for the second goal, and Scannell finally got a decent ball into the box for the third.

3 very important points, and starts off a winnable run of games with 3 points in the bag.

Mildenhall - Couldn't do anything about either goal. Commanding his area well and used the ball well.

JFC - Was surprised to see him at right back ahead of Grant. Did a solid job there, but didn't seem to want to put the ball into the box, like Francis does. We missed Francis in an attacking sense, but JFC did a better defensive job and linked up well with his mate ahead of him.

Morrison - Felt it was a surprising choice for MOTM as Laurent should have won it. Impressive performance, and there is definately something there to be worked on. Looks a terrific talent, and I'd love to be able to bring him in. Glad his loan has been sorted for another month.

Barrett - Usual display from the skipper. Won his headers and wrested his opponents. Looks so much more comfortable alongside a proper centre half as it allows him to stay on his own game rather than worry about where Grant/JFC is when they play centre half.

Malone - Not overly impressed with him. One decent set piece delivery for Laurent's goal, and some decent crosses in open play. Plenty of bad deliveries from set pieces and bottled a couple of tackles. We need to sort out a proper left back in January be it Herd or bringing someone in long term (Or at least a loan till the end of the season).

Laurent - MOTM. Completely unplayable and proving to be equally as important as Barnard. He is worth the admission fee alone. Love watching him play, I haven't seen a winger like him for a long time at Roots Hall.

Grant - Had an off game. His passing looked better than previously. Like I mentioned, partly at fault for their first goal, and unlucky with the second.

Macca - Off colour first half, terrific second half. His pressing, and closing down for the second goal was Macca of old. Glad he is beginning to find form again as he is an important player for us, when on song.

Moussa - Better than in recent weeks. Was involed more in the game, and had a run out in the middle and looked better for it. Still think we need a genuine left winger though, even if its as an option off the bench.

Jabo - I like him. Should have scored when he put it wide, and unlucky to hit the cross bar. Wasn't overly convinced when we signed him, but is winning me over. Much prefer him to Revell. Big, strong, and works hard. Needs a goal.

Barnard - Missed two sitters in the first half, scored two crucial goals second half and picks up all the pludits. Not his best performance, but I'd settle for that every week if he continued to score 2 goals a game.

Subs:

Scannell - I felt we may lose some of our cutting edge when he came on as Laurent had been superb but that was his best performance, that I've witnessed, in some time. I'd forgotten what a headed goal from open play looked like until Saturday. When was the last time a winger got to the touchline and delivered for the strikers. Lovely bit of skill out there as well.

Walker - Wasn't really involved.

Overall, delighted with the result. Been ill all week, missed the bowling part of my football teams Christmas do to go, and probably wouldn't have gone to the game if I didn't have a season ticket but am over the moon that I went.

Love days like Saturday. 2-0 up, you ****ed it up!

Macca will get some good ratings because he got an assist and looked busy, but I was personally furious with his first half showing. Was directly responsible for their first goal and everytime he got the ball, the move broke down. Granted, he was much improved, as they all were, after half time but it doesn't disguise just how poor he was in the first half.

Hartlepool were **** poor, but we made hard work of it and should've won the game 3-0.

Totally agree, he did better than recently but he's still not that great a threat as he once was. When they were practising their shots in the warm-up i just cringed when Macca hit into the South Upper. He did better but not as good as should be expected from him.

Also put a shot away beautifully. You really can't have it both ways.

Did he score that shot? I'm pretty sure he didn't even get it on target, which is becoming a common theme with him.

Slotted it away right nestling in the corner and then trotted off the pitch - you are all so going to realise his importance when he's gone.

Bit late but...
Mildy 8 Unlucky for second and could do nothing about the first, looked solid throughout as usual and is one of our most consistent players
JFC 7 Linked well with Laurent but looked a bit lax defensively at times
Barrett 7.5 Going forward was good, haven't seen that in a while, and defensively was suspect at times but generally ok
Morrison 8 Wasnt sure about the man of the match decision but was solid and will be a fantastic player
Malone 7 Set pieces were poor a few good passes and an ok defensive display though
Laurent 9 MOTM Fantastic. Main threat throughout, his pace and skill ripped them apart but looked shaken after the injury, hope he's alright
Macca 6 Sorry but he was awful. The first goal was mainly his fault and shouldn't have gone mouthing off again and probably had more shots out the ground than successful passes
Grant 7.5 Unnoticed really, did his job well, some good tackles
Moussa 6.5 Another quiet game although looked better wen in the middle. Worked hard and was looking for ball
Barney 8.5 Right place at the right time really, good positional work and runs, a real striker who score strikers goals
Ibehre 7.5 Did alright, worked hard and had a few chances and maybe should have taken one
Subs
Scannell 7.5 Good cross for the winner and used pace well, was quite a good performance with only the odd headless chicken moment
Walker 7 Didnt really have long enough but wasn't too bad, maybe should have made more out of 1 chance

Tilly n Brush 9.5 Hard to complain when you come back from 2 down at half time. Wouldn't have said they are motivational but must have done something right!
TBV 7.5 Not bad for a Saturday afternoon
Ref Honestly can't remember much about him so let's say 6.5 and the Ginger lino could get a -10 was one of the worst I've ever seen and I play Sunday football where the other teams manager does the line!

Did Macca put any shots out of the ground Saturday?

I remember him having 2/3 shoots, all off target, but not out of the ground.
