Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-0 Wealdstone

Massively enjoyed that one, we played so so well especially the first 30 minutes. Could have definitely been more goals what with that awesome overhead attempt by KAF and there was a crossbar later on I think. Really hope we can attack with the same mentality against Gatehead. I mean, if KM was ever going to instruct to sit back and take the draw, I guess that's the game to do it, but I hope that's not the case. Win again and the confidence going into the playoffs will be immense.

Is it a forgone conclusion that playoff games are away, are they somewhere neutral? I'm not really clued up on it. Either way, Wembley is close enough (physically, and almost mentally)
Need to finish 5th to get a home play-off, not impossible but highly unlikely

Thoroughly enjoyable game to go to. Looked like every one of our players went into the game with a positive confident mindset and although there were a couple of nervous looking headers\ passes early on, everyone composed themselves and gave a very good account of themselves.
TBV were more than a 12th man it seemed with amazing noise and have to give credit to the stones fans who gave great support to their team.
My MOM was Goodliffe who I thought made all the right decisions and gave an aggressive leading performance. I hadn't realized the extent of some of his previous injuries (as well as the face injury, a knee injury resulting in a 90 degree cast for a month!. Can't imagine how that must feel).
He looks like he's enjoying his football and for me is better for us than kensdale, due to being less easily muscled off the ball and a much bigger threat at our corners. There's apparently a very decent chance we'd make an offer to keep him next year either perm or loaned. If golding were to reappear next year which may still happen, Taylor, Ralph, Goodliffe, Golding, would offer very solid choices at the back. However, a hernia operation and lots of discussion need to take place first.
Ben has had two serious knee injuries in his career one at Wolves and then another one at Sutton both requiring months of rehab, despite that he played 225 games for Sutton in 5 years and is still only 25 so a decent age to continue his career.

Ben would be a brilliant signing. A leader, physical, a goal scorer. Only 25! Hope we’re not just keeping him fit for Colchester. 🤞
Keeping him fit for us was the original plan and that's why Danny Cowley wanted him to go to Southend as we had other players for his position who were likely to be higher up the pecking order. We are paying some of his salary and he does have another year on his deal plus an option for another year. However rather than recall him Danny signed another central defender (Jack Tucker) from MK Dons after we lost the impressive young central defender on loan from Forest Aaron Donnelly who signed for Dundee for a 6 figure sum. If we decide to let him leave I would imagine Southend would have to match his salary, I don't know how much he earns but we did pay a fee for him and beat other clubs salary offers to get him.

Halifax are away at Wealdstone, and I can see them losing that, as Halifax are on awful form and as poor as Wealdstone were on Saturday, I think they may have enough, having to win to stand any chance of staying up. It would also involve Oldham losing at home to Ebbsfleet. Now as bad as Oldham's form is (It is identical to Ebbsfleet over the past 6 games!), I can't see them losing and us winning with a 4 goal swing in goal difference too.

One thing I did look at though, is our record against the other play-off teams.

York - Draw (H) Lost (A)
FGR - Draw (H) Draw (A)
Rochdale - Won (A) Draw (H)
Oldham - Draw (A) Won (H)
Halifax - Won (A) Won (H)

So 1 defeat, 5 draws and 4 wins in 10 games. It goes to show that its been our poor form and inability to breakdown the poorer teams in the division that has cost us this season.

And I'd wager that the current team would not get exposed at the back in the way the team that lost 3-0 at York did

Imagine having to go back to the soulless Colfester, poor sod 😅
