Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-0 Wealdstone

The team, every one of them including subs, played like they really wanted it yesterday. They didn't allow Wealdstone any time on the ball, turning it over and looking to get forward quickly at every opportunity. As has been seen at other times this season, we are a much better proposition when we play at pace.

As others have said, there were a number of players worthy of MoM but I thought Goodliffe was immense and showed a spirit that has sometimes been missing this season. He appears to be enjoying it here so I hope a deal can be done with ColU to keep him at the Hall. The back three were solid, although Wealdstone didn't produce much of a threat. Noor was great in that pivotal role and KAF and Coker worked tirelessly. I was pleased to see some interplay between Coker and Bridge like there used to be between the latter and Fonguck and it brings out the best in Jack when he has that support. Gus was typical Gus and the cross he produced for the first goal was superb. I know Hopper gets a lot of stick from some individuals on here, but he works very hard and draws defenders to create that little bit of extra space for the likes of Kendall, Coker and KAF, so although he doesn't find the net very often he is playing an important part. Kendall also works hard, badgering opposition defenders into making mistakes and he took his chance to score with great composure. I love the fact that when our front two have run themselves into the ground we have Walker and Bonne to come on to sustain the forward pressure at a time when tired defenders are prone to making errors, exactly as it turned out for the third goal.

Yesterday was the type of performance for which we have all been crying out, but we have to remember that the calibre of the opposition in the last two games has not been of the highest. Despite their recent form, I expect Gateshead to put up much more of a fight and we will need to be on our game to secure that final playoff spot. We all know that Nouble will delight in spoiling our end to the season if he can so let's hope our back three don't give him a chance. COYB

Hopefully Goodliffe will nail him with a reducer early doors and the little **** will hide for the rest of the game.

What a game that was, most entertained I've been at Roots Hall this season, made all the more enjoyable as our 11 year old grandson has been coming along with us the last few games and now seems to be hooked as well! He knew all the stats of the teams around us and result implications, and of those in the leagues below. He loved it yesterday!

Big shout out to my flag bearers yesterday, three of them were due to do it on Boxing Day, but living down in Dorset got so caught up in traffic that they arrived about 20 minutes after kick off and missed out - yesterday, they'd left at 8am to make sure they were there in time, and they did a great job.

Not sure I agreed with the MOTM decision, I thought Goodliffe, Taylor and Coker were all absolutely outstanding. Goodliffe is starting to look like a more complete Kensdale, and would definitely fill that hole if we can't agree terms on Golding, should he wish to stay at the south end of the A12.

All round, as dominant a performance from the Blues as you're likely to see - every one of them working hard and doing their bit. Hopper and Bridge have been much criticised on here but my goodness, they both worked their proverbial socks off....Hops desperately unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions.

Game plan looked solid. I was surprised Cav didn't start, but Husin showed that he is more than capable of covering that role - and picked up a yellow card to further endorse that! Spoke to Morts before the match in the dugout, he hopes to be back for next weekend, ankle swelled up considerably after the Braintree match so resting it as a precautionary measure. KAF grew into the game, he was quietish to begin with but came to life more as it went on, great energy throughout. Coker was the puppet master, pulling all the strings, decent corners and free kicks as well.

Defensively as sound as you can get, Reid was well marshalled by all three of the central defenders. Nathan Ralph's ability to leap and win headers continues to astound me - so dominant. Taylor and Goodliffe, as already said, were immense. Gus quieter and more industrious defensively than he usually is, but still showed that will and energy to get forwards. Hayes little to do, but when called upon, he was solid.

Which leaves Charley Kendall. This young man, when fully fit, is going to be a great player. You can really see why we were tracking him and why we went against the new data system to secure him. There's a really exciting young talent in there, and hopefully he'll become truly worthy of the duh, duh, duh, DUH chant.

Subs all came on and played their part. Walker seems more dogged and determined, showed a lot of strength, and I'm glad to see Bonne winning more fans over every week.

Hayes - 7
Gus - 7.5
Taylor - 8
Goodliffe - 8.5, my MOTM
Ralph - 7.5
Bridge - 7.5
Husin - 7.5
Coker - 8
KAF - 7.5
Hopper - 7
Kendall - 7.5

Subs:
Walker for Kendall - 7
Bonne for Hopper - 7.5
Miley for Coker, LCP for Bridge and Gubbins for Ralph - all n/a

Credit to the ref who seemed to get most things right, including the cards. And fair play to the Wealdstone supporters who gave it their all through most of the match. On to Gateshead, one point needed.
Husin preferred to Miley again, seems Cav has slipped down the pecking order for defensive midfield behind Noor and Morts. Just wonder wether Cav might move on in the summer. Understand he's based a distance away and might want something closer to home, particularly if he's no longer an automatic starter.

It's a bit of a chicken and egg, Cav needs games to get fully match fit but as he's not fully match fit he's not starting games. I still want to keep him as we know how good he can be when up and running.

It's Maher's opinion of Cav that matters, and I believe he really rates him. Injuries, and the length of time it has taken to get him fit, have counted against him on the starter front now. Add to that just about every mid fielder has found form at the same time. An uninterrupted pre season will go a long way to him playing more.

One of the things I think has helped recently is that we've started to see a bit of the old Bridge back. His final ball radar is still not quite fully recalibrated, but he seems to be finding his half-yards and movements into space again.

That’s because he now has Coker playing alongside him.

Coker has both the intelligence and the energy to get up alongside him and make the runs Bridge wants. Coker turns the 1 on 1s or 1 on 2 into 2 on 2s and Bridge is excellent in 2 on 2 situations where he can use the runner as a decoy.

The same crossed my mind Monday when Noor was preferred to him in Cav’s role.

At the moment Cav looks odd man out and as he doesn’t have the versatility that Noor has it does put a question mark on his future. If Noor is preferred to him in that DCM role and with Morton also to return, what exactly will be his role? Late sub to close out games seems quite narrow. Maybe he’ll also play more LCB when he matches up well with opposition but it also left me wondering when Maher brought him on whether it was to give him a Roots Hall goodbye. If so he was a very good player for us.

When Maher first became head coach he correctly identified that the team was too old and set out bringing the age down and adding willing and able runners like Cav and Noor. However Cav turns 30 this week, Noor is 28. The torch seems to have been passed to Coker (22), KAF (23) and Parillon (23). Those three have injected energy and dynamism into our midfield in recent weeks and aren’t so much the future as the present.

Excellent performance yesterday, and having the pressure off from earlier results going our way was clear to see in the way we played without the fear which was so clear to see in the games against Solihull and Braintree.

I do hope we play on the front foot up at Gateshead because their confidence is at an all time low, which means they won't fancy being put under any sort of pressure whatsoever.

If we do get a result up there then the side nobody will want to play is us, because we will be on a run, take a partisan and large crowd away and properly put any side under pressure because the only side better than us is York, and if we do get that far it'll be 50/50 by then and anyone's game.

It was an extremly good performance but let's not forget how poor Wealstone were :They never really looked like scoring at all.Had to leave before that third goal to catch the excellent guitar show show at the Palace theatre.Someting i don't normally do but the match was obviously won.
