But then Worrall should also start every game. Payne got his chance due to DW being ill. Would say that DW fits in a 442 better than Payne. What we need with our new strike force is width and crosses into the box, Worrall gives us this, whereas Payne thrives on a more free role in the middle. At the moment if fit i would prefer Atkinson, Lenny, Timo and Worrall as the four. This gives some creativity and certainly non stop working. Payne can still drfit in and out of games soemwhat and offers little physical presence

It is a question of do you select players to fit a certain system or do you maybe alter the system to accommodate your best players. Who would leave Messi out of a team just because he doesn't fit into a current system. We cannot afford to leave Payne out otherwise we would be just relying on Piggot to been the main goalscorer. The following line up would be likely to produce goals.

Bentley
White Thompson Binnon-Williams or Barrett Coker
Timlin
Leonard Payne Worrall
Pigott Cassidy

This would be a 4-1-3-2 line up but would have plenty of goals in it, OK maybe a bit narrow but the full backs are both capable of pushing on.

The likes of Hurst, Atkinson, Weston, Deegan etc are OK players but are no goal threat and yet PB has played them in attacking midfield roles at times yet leaving out Payne and playing Leonard in a deep position.

Like all things it is just a matter of opinion and is what Shrimperzone is for!

I was not a great fan of Thompson, but after the last couple of games I will eat my words, it was a great performance from him and Binnom-Williams was not far behind.

Oh dear SG. Do people really need to post a smiley so that irony is understood. I would actually have that as post of the day.

The trouble is there are so many ridiculous posts on here that sometimes it's difficult to tell the difference between when people are being ironic and when it is their real thoughts!

My bad if I missed the irony here - it was late and I was overwhelmed by the Tuesday night win! :winking:

PB was right to make the subs when he did. Coker was doubtful to begin with and once we had obviously secured the 3 points, Payne and Cassidy were rightly saved for Saturday.

Do you sit in Phil's lap on coach journey's,just wondering like.

So now I go on the team coach as well as only sit in the directors box. Where you getting your gossip from, same source as Chris Phillips ?

Please lets hear some more rubbish about me Mrsbluedrivell at least the team will get a break.

in in fairness I rarely slate the team and Defo never at games(when I attend)and rarely slate Phil apart from the obvious blunders which he Imo made.

I like you Rigsby because you have inside knowledge which we all find very useful:winking:

So very true, the best comparison I can think of was the partnership of Mercer and Spencer, whilst Spencer received the plaudits for his goals the work of Mercer was often overlooked. I'm sure there are other examples but this is the one that strikes me.

Sorry to be pedantic, but it was Derek Spence, his partner Keith Mercer came from Watford I think, and was often the un-sung hero of the partnership in the 80-81 season.

My mates couldn't understand why I rated the barrel chested driving runs through the opposition, to set up Spence. Spence got all the plaudits of course. Scoring many headed goals from corners also, but un-selfish work from Keith Mercer added to his goal tally.

I think Derek Spence came from Blackpool (and returned there maybe) and was an Irish international.

Spoil sport, I just thought of a new name for him...... Frank and of course the barrel would be changed to Betty

Yep, Spence came from Blackpool.

We were mega-strong at home in 1980-81.

Added to the goals those two scored, the defence was ultra efficient, lead by Alan Moody, with support from Dave Cusack and Tony Hadley (before he went off and formed Spandau Ballet!). We won 19 and drew the other 4 and only conceded something like 4 goals all season.

I think we won every home game until late January, when we drew 0-0 with someone like Doncaster or Northampton.:Worthy:

There's a lot of similarities between that side and this one, but Spence's goals are the main difference.

I here you used to be a dodgy landlord.

Just switched SSN and as they were showing L2 goals and they only showed Shrews, Burton (0-0!) and Wycombe!

I know I can see them elsewhere but you would think they could at least show our goals rather than an incident from a 0-0 game.

given there has only been 1 goal in our last 4 home games before last night, they probably were not expecting to have anything to show

Having consulted my copy of Peter Mason's 'History of the Blues' - "Available from all good book shops" :winking:

Spence scored 21 goals, but forgotten hero - Terry Gray - actually scored almost as many (17) and "The Barrel" netted 10.

I was looking back at my first ever match in the book last night - available in some good living rooms!
