A distinctly average display that unfortunately, had it not been for three defensive howlers, would probably have won the game. Morecambe weren't terible, but they were there for the taking and both Moshni and Gilbert have a lot to answer for.
Defensively, we were 50/50. I say that, because Barker oozed class as per usual and Clohessy was his usual self as well, not brilliant defensively but solid enough, yet posed a good threat going forward (his diagonal crossfield balls are superb). That leads me onto Moshni who, again, was all over the place. He's simply too unpredictable to warrant a place in the side at the moment. I remember last year Warnock saying the same of N'Diaye at Palace... That at times he was technically brilliantly, but his positioning was all over the place to such an extent that it was a nightmare to place him into any particular role. Moshni's exactly the same, but we're giving him a crucial role on the pitch.
I'm afraid it'll have to be a case of dropping him until he has a good two to three months work with Coughlan and Widdrington to sort himself and his understanding of the game out, or he'll continue to cost us.
Moshni going walkabouts seemed to affect Gilbert no end, as he had no idea whether he was supposed to be covering centrally or keeping with his man on the side. This wasn't helped by him being a good yard or two off the pace, and he was continually beat by a below-par winger.
In midfield it was obvious we were missing Easton and Timlin was hindered by a complete lack of understanding... He ran into other midfielders a few times and misplaced passes. That said, he broke up a fair few Morecambe attacks and looked to maintain pressure on them by picking the loose ball up from set pieces and picking it wide again for the cross. Simpson looked busy to no affect, and the last 20 minutes today Grant simply looked bored of carrying them, which worries me.
Corr was so hit and miss today it was unbelievable... He really should've had the beaten off the two centre-backs all day long but looked as if he was struggling with a knock or lack of fitness. If you compare his display with Mullin's for Morecambe, who was a continual nuisance and held the line brilliantly, then you can see where we were going wrong.
Hall was good, if ineffectual given Corr's anonymity, and Sturrock's all round play continues to impress me, even if he was merely "ok" today. His crossing, by the way, is exceptional.
All in all, today was hugely frustrating. Morecambe were there for the taking and we were let down today by three defensive errors. I dare say that even more people will now call for the arrival of the mystical 20 goal striker, as if he'll be bestowed onto us by Sturrock/RM/The Pope/Jesus, yet the long and short of it is if you score twice at home, you really should be picking up a point at least no matter the opposition. Tighter at the back, without the whimsical Moshni, and today would've been sealed. Next week, I want to see changes at the back... Clohessy - Coughlan - Prosser/Phillips - Barker, for me, would be ideal.
Ratings for Pringello -
Morris - 6 - Probably could've commanded his box better, but was let down for both goals.
Clohessy - 6 - Solid(ish) performance
Barker - 7.5 - Shouldn't be an 8 because we've conceded 3 goals, but he was let down by his colleagues today.
Moshni - 4 - Only positive is that he wasn't as bad as...
Gilbert - 4 - Pretty woeful, really.
Timlin - 5 - I expect he'll be considerably better than today with three or four days training behind him.
Grant - 7 - Faded in the second, but in the first he was miles above anybody else on the pitch. I pray he doesn't realise this.
Simpson - 6 - Quiet by his standards, but still reasonable
Hall - 6 - Again, indifferent display. Great set piece delivery, far more consistent than Soares, but needs more confidence in beating his man round the outside.
Sturrock - 6 - Needs to be stronger, but his link-up play and crossing is still better than most "support strikers" I've seen.
Corr - 5 - Looked hampered by a knock.
Subs
Soares/Herd - both 5's. Brought little to the party.
Spencer - Not enough to fairly judge.
Quick word for the officials, who missed an awful lot today. Initially, the referee tried to play the advantage, and it was the right decision in some places, but his decision making elsewhere was inaccurate and inconsistent. As for the key, contentious decision of the day, Shuker definitely lashed out at Moshni, kicking him in the ribs with both feet, and deserved a straight red for violent conduct. The referee didn't see it at all, but the linesman did... While the referee was fannying around with the players, the linesman was being spoken to by both McCrory and his assistant and was then called over by the referee for his judgement. It's either a straight red, or it's nothing, and it seemed to me that the linesman bottled making a strict decision either way and the referee made his own judgement based on the crowd, the players' reactions and Moshni's marks... which is just **** poor officiating.
