Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-2 Swindon Town

Well, that was a fantastic end to the game.

In my opinion, Swindon aren't that much better than us. They are a team flying high because of the confidence a good run of results brings. We are a team struggling because of the lack of confidence because of a bad run of form. They did have some good players, but they had their share of **** ones, like the right back for example. This showed by our second half performance. We went to 4-4-2 and played two wingers who got at the full backs and pinned them on the back foot. If our come back had started earlier, who knows, it may have been Hartlepool all over again.

Tilson got the tactics wrong first half. I thought playing M'Voto was a needless risk because we had just brought in Baldwin to partner Barrett. Yes, M'Voto does need game time, but it should really start with a run of reserves/behind closed door matches. He was at fault for the first goal, and nearly cost us another one by mucking around with the ball at the back. It was obvious to me and my mate that M'Voto was nowhere near ready to be thrown back into the first team.

Going back to 4-4-2, and the introduction of Scannell changed the game in my eyes. Francis was having a nightmare at right wing back. Everytime he went forward and lost the ball, there was 40/50 yards to run into. When he has back making it 5 across the back, there was 40/50 yards in front of him for their winger to run into. Wingback is a horrible position as one minute your expected to be forward putting crosses into the box, and when the move breaks down your expected to be in at right back doing the defensive side of the job.

Mildenhall - No chance with the goals. Paynter was about 7 yards out, and Austin was about 8 yards out. Couple of dodgy kicks, but made up for it with some smart saves in the second half to keep us in with a chance.

Baldwin - Slotted in nicely at the back, and looked to be a real steady eddy. Obviously chipped in with a cruical goal, but I thought he defended quite well as well. Would like to make him a permenant addition to the squad. Became Barrett's 8th centre back partner as well.

Barrett - Usual Barrett performance. First half looked to be one of our only threats when travelling with the ball. Benefited by having a proper centre half alongside him as it allows him to concentrate on his own job, rather than worrying about anyone elses.

M'Voto - Simply wasn't fit. Shouldn't have played and was at fault for the first goal. If he had had a run of games, that first goal wouldn't of happened. He'd have eaten that long ball up all day long.

Malone - Not a fan to be perfectly honest. His set piece delivery is dire for someone who was signed as a "dead-ball specialist". Was a bit worried about him going central midfield, but didn't look out of place. Would be too lightweight to do the job normally though.

Francis - Had a nightmare first half. I made a point of encouraging him from the East Reds after everything he did because he looked like he didn't want to be out there after a couple of early mistakes. Didn't help that someone from East Reds shouted something along the lines of "buck your ideas up or **** off". Not helpful.

Grant - Hope the injury isn't too bad as he will be a big miss. Did okay on Saturday. Don't remember an awful lot from him to be perfectly honest.

JFC - Looks a player well out of sorts. Did some good bits, couple of cracking tackles, and one or two lovely passes out to Laurent, but didn't play well. Needs an arm around him to get him going again.

Moussa - Not impressed. Poor attempt at a tackle infront of the East Reds, that led to Swindon breaking away. His passing wasn't up to scratch, and is in desperate need of a rest. With some of his recent performances, I wonder if he hadn't come through the youth team, would some of our fans turned their backs on him like they do with Scannell, Francis, Walker etc.

Vernon - Looked okay up top. Needs the games to get himself up to speed, as Saturday was his first competitive start in 10 weeks. Felt a bit sorry for Paterson being dropped. He comes in, plays 2 games with zero support around him, then a suitable partner comes in and Paterson is dropped and Vernon gets a strike partner.

Laurent - Massive, massive fan of his. Have heard there was a Cardiff scout at the game, and I would imagine he will attract interest from Championship Clubs shortly. Some of his skills are breath taking. I'd love to watch a reel of his best bits, I imagine some of it would be top flight stuff. The way he turned his man to lift the ball over the bar was superb, his run infront of the East stand that led to a shot which the keeper saved was brilliant. His tricks and flicks are awesome.

Subs:

Scannell - The introduction of him, and the 4-4-2 put the game back in our favour. He got at his full back, which it sounded like he didn't at Millwall. Created our two goals, and should be very happy with his afternoons work. Felt it was harsh dropping him.

Spencer - Should have scored with a free header, but made up for it with an overhead kick on the floor to scramble the first goal home. Looks bright and lively, but probably best being used from the bench at the moment.

Herd - Did what was asked of him. Really struggling to work out how Malone is better than Herd, but at the same time I think we should have brought an experienced left back in over Malone to help Herd. Will be a top player, hopefully for us.

Mildenhall - No chance with the goals. Paynter was about 7 yards out, and Austin was about 8 yards out. Couple of dodgy kicks, but made up for it with some smart saves in the second half to keep us in with a chance.

Sorry, but have you seen the highlights ?

My nan would be quicker off the line than that, the second goal he's on his knees before Austin's even got the ball out of his feet.

Granted, I haven't see them on tv yet, but my initial impression was both had all the time and space available to them and could pick any spot in the goal. More of a problem with the defence, then Mildenhall.

Fair point, Mvoto and Baldwin should have done better to clear the initial danger.

For the first goal Mildy was obviously expecting the ball to be cleared, once M'Voto missed the header he didn't have alot of time to react.

I've stood back, considered things rationally & dispassionately as you've suggested YB.

My view has now changed. It's obvious to me that I should be supporting ManUre, Chelski, Inter or Barca. Well isn't that what the head should say? (and probably many poster on here!)

I believe we've had far worse players at this club both individually & as a group, but I've seldom seen a more disorganised team as we currently have. There was one moment in the 1st half when a ball got played into the corner by the SW. Malone lumped it against the bloke in front of him & it rebounded towards our byline. Mildenhall went running to the edge of the area, realised he was nowhere & stopped. All the rest of the back 5 went running left towards it, including Franno. Moose & Granty scampered that way, so did almost everyone & really it was only a cr@p cross that gave a couple of them time to get within 5 yards of their left mid, who made a hash of it anyway.

But truthfully it was like watching a Keystone Cops League U8 game, where all the kids run after the ball in a circle of about 5 yards. It's been like that game after game this season & my concern is that we don't seem to have a style or a strategy. Ok we've had an unsettled team, but it must be easier for a player to come into a team playing the same each week, even if they are a square peg in a round hole & I just don't see that.

AS Monaco?

I'm not saying it was a good performance, I'm not saying there weren't times when the players looked as if they'd never played in that formation together and barely knew each others names, but that's not surprising with a new formation and 2 new signings. But I thought we looked a lot more likely to score than we did at Millwall, or the first half against Wycombe. I thought we moved the ball around better and attacked with far more purpose than in recent weeks. I could see something to build on there.

Didn't see the Wycombe or Millwall games but would agree with all the rest. If we stick to 4-4-2 I think we've got enough to stay up. With the signing of Baldwin and Mvoto on his way back, we should have enough in defence. We've got 2 from 3 to choose from up front. The midfield is still a weak link. It's probably going to be Macca and Grant in the centre with Laurent and Scannell out wide. I would like us to get another wide player in on loan though. I've haven't seen anything of O'Keeffe but wonder if him and Grant might be a longer term bet in the centre?
