Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-2 Swindon Town

To be fair, i would rather play badly and get apoint than play amazing and lose, i could see some positives here and i think the only one to blame is tilson for the first half

Can someone tell me where Stuart O'Keefe was today?.

From what I read he had a decent game at Millwall but did not even make the bench today. Is he:

A) Ill

B) Injured

C) Been sold to Real Madrid for several million but Ron doesn't want it announced until the cheque has cleared through his Cayman Island bank account?.

Amazing, I was just about to pose exactly the same question!

Walker was banished from the bench as well. Cue the "is Walker dead?" threads.

Would imagine Walker will be flogged before the deadline. O Keefe, well 2 defenders, a keeper, winger and 2 strikers is about right for a bench. We had 3 centre mids out there so guess Tilly didnt think he needed another one on the bench.

Mildenhall - 7

Baldwin -8
Malone - 6
Grant - 6
JFC - 5
Moussa - 5

Scannell - 8

Thought Baldwin did really well today, commanded the box more than Barrett and helped cover up an areas that were left un-attended. Hopefully we'll get him on a permanent at the end of the season as he looked very passionate and made for encouraging viewing. Didn't think Vernon did that much but held the ball up well and generally helped the midfield and strikers out by laying it off and dropping back to pick gaps. Scannell did brilliant if you ask me, fast, a bit of skill and helped get past the tired defenders and was key in the last 20 minutes.

Some of the more knowledgable of our fans at the back of W block in the west stand were giving him grief throughout, simply because of where he came from. Surprisingly the comments ceased after he scored!. Personally, i thought he is exactly the type of player we currently need.

Mildenhall - 6.5

Barrett 6.5
Baldwin 7.5 MOM
Mvoto 4 (not fit)

Tilson 2.5 (Got it wrong sorry 1st half was terrible)

Ref 5.5

our second should really have been disallowed because Scannell was at least 2ft off the pitch when he crossed the ball.

It was at the opposite end of the pitch to me, but the pics on the OS look like the ball was still on the pitch when he crossed it. Also the ball was over the line for our first.

The first half today was without doubt THE worst set up of a football team I have ever seen in my fifty years of watching football. What thought process Tilson went throught to send that team out I can only imagine, Mvoto wasn't even 20% fit he looked like a shopfitters manniken.
Thank god he got it right second half.

These wouldnt be the same knowledgable fans who have spent all season abusing Simon Francis would they. I thought Baldwin had a really good game and if the cretins at the back of the west cannot see beyond the club he comes from i pity theml

Ratings

Mildy 6 - Couple of saves which he should be making. Kicking mostly awful- although there was one which set vernon clean through. Didn't come for one cross

Francis 6.5 - Looked lost in the first half. Didn't want to commit going forward as no one was covering for him. Excellent in the second.

Barrett 6 - Some of the marking from set pieces was woeful -Barrett must take some blame for this, but the 3 at the back didn't help. Also - the partnership with Baldwin is new to Barrett too!

Baldwin 7 - Looked really solid. Exactly what we have needed since Prior and Sodje left - a big bloke who can defend.

M'voto 4 - Not ready yet. Not sure if we have a reserve game in midweek, but if not I suggest we arrange one for big JYM

Malone 5 - Set pieces woeful. Didnt look comfortable at wing back. Does have good stamina and works hard though

Christophe 6.5 - Can't understand why Jean is getting poor marks today. I thought he was better than he has been for months - gave the ball away far less than normal.

Grant 6 - Did well, not a creative midfielder so was always gonna struggle pushed on in midfield. Seemed to struggle with the 5-3-2, certainly never covered for Francis when he should have been.

Moose 4 - Awful, time for a rest for Franck

Vernon 6 - Looked quite handy up front. Never looked like scoring, but held the ball up well and chased the ball down well

Laurent 6 - Looked the most likely player to create, but seemed intent on taking the whole swindon team on rather than occasionally passing. Should have played Vernon in in the first half and spencer from 4 yards in the second. Unlucky with his shot in the first half. In injury time he delayed getting the ball lumped into the box twice which was ridiculous as this was when we had them panicing when the ball was played in there.

Subs
Scannell 7 - Did really well. Put an excellent ball in with his left foot - and after that swindon didnt just want to show him outside and he caused some problems - Set up the second goal. More left foot crosses from left mid please Damian

Spencer 7 - Looked lively, worked hard and scored a goal. Hasn't played 90mins for us yet and he's a goal short of being joint top scored.

Herd 6.5 - Looked really good. Time for a proper chance Tilly - Malone isn't any better and Herds throw ins are more dangerous than Malones corners!

I thought we were extremely lucky to come away from that game with a point. We let in two of the softest goals you are likely to ever see. Our two goals were both goalmouth scrambles and both questionable (first one for whether it was over the line, second one for whether ball went out play). I have seen both home games in the last week and we deserved the prize sum of 0 points out of them. We have got 2 points out of them so we should think ourselves lucky. And I like Tilson but 5-4-1 at home??

Mildew - 7

Really don't know why M'voto played, I could see from the stands that he wasn't fit. And I don't like Scannell but, to give him his due, he got us a point from that game!

To conclude, we got a point we didn't deserve but we will be embarrassed by Col U (and on national tv) if we don't improve substantially. The performances from most of the players were unacceptable.

Dreadful first 80 minutes. Last ten were better. Baldwin was okay, Vernon needs a partner - was hoping that would have been Paterson today. We have nothing in midfield. Two really scrappy goals, but desperately needed the point.

Don't know where we go from here. What did we start off with 3 - 6 -1?

Lets get back to 4 - 4 - 2 and play the players in their proper positions.

During the first half I kept doing a double take of the dugout to check it was still Tilson in there and I hadn't stepped into a timewarp and I was in fact watching an Alvin Martin/Rob Newman team out there.

The only plus sides I could take from today was seeing Tilson change it up at half time instead of waiting until 80 minutes and I liked the look of Spencer, he showed a real hunger and desire that was missing in the rest of the team.

ratings are mainly for 2nd half performance as 1st half was just awful

i honestly think that nobody knew where they were supposed to be playing which just made us look a joke. once the second went in the swindon fans must have thought it would be a landslide and who could blame them.

swindon didnt really impress me and i think their league position is a bit flattering

7 defensive players in the team at home.......i'm still baffled

men of the match - baldwin & spencer for grabbing us what could be a very important point

The first half was nowhere near as bad as it is being portrayed.

We actually hit the woodwork twice in that half (albeit one would have been harshly disallowed for handball) and we weren't being completely overrun at the back. I'd suggest that was an improvement over both Millwall (did we have a shot?) and Wycombe. The first goal came from an individual error from a player who hadn't played for 4 months, the second looked off-side. On another day we go in at half-time level. Not our best display - and again we looked devoid of confidence - but not the worst display either.

People complain about the players not giving them anything to cheer about, but even when coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 Roots Hall was strangely muted. I'm starting to wonder if it'd be a good thing if those rumours of a ground share were actually true. The main difference between us and Swindon today was confidence. Swindon, riding high, had it in bucketfuls, we looked as if we were trying to hide. The players are terrified of making a mistake.

Don't think anyone was outstanding, the two loanees from Col Ewe did fairly well and looked sound acquisitions. Apart from anything else they add a bit of experience. I'd guess Moussa was another one struggling with that flu bug, like Sankofa was on Tuesday. Laurent was a good outlet and Scannell added some energy as sub. I think that is his best role.

Not only did we steal 2 points from Swindon, but we metaphorically urinated in their Wiltshire faces with a ****-poor performance.

The whole 3-5-2/5-3-2 thing was interesting, but ultimately doomed to fail. M'Voto patently not ready, and the players looked clueless playing a formation which is alien to them. I'd suggest to ditch the tactical experimentation at home at such a vital stage of the season with big games coming up. Stick with what we know, please.

The decline of Moussa is saddening. His passing was all over the place and rightly taken off at half time. Perhaps a few games out and he'll come back refreshed and re-discover that form he had at the end of last season. Unfortunately we don't have the luxury of dropping players right now. Gah!

Great impact by Spencer, and particularly Scannell, who has seemingly become a scapegoat for the collective failures of late.

Col U boys looked good. Baldwin looks like exactly what we've been missing at the back, and Vernon looks a decent targetman, plus he's got a powerful shot on him.
