Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-2 Swindon Town

Let off big time

Utter ***** AGAIN today we deserved nothing I am afraid to say tilly has been let off big time here we realy are in trouble this season despite what I have said previously

Sounded on the radio like it was indeed depressingly shocking - until we went to 4-4-2 and started playing with positivity and started to threaten more. I think we were only awful because of the negative set-up from the start.

Game of two halves. First half we were shocking, and thats being kind. 5-3-2 simply didn't work. Mvoto looked like he had never seen a ball before. Malone was lost. Moussa and Grant simply not there. Laurent was the only bright spark. First goal was yet more joke defending and the second looked offside. That said, Swindon could have had several more and many were considering the option of the pub at half time.

Second half, we were better. Not great, but better. Reverting to 442 by throwing on Spencer and Scannell for the woeful Moussa and Mvoto, we at least looked like a team of footballers. Even so, Swindon had the better chances and Mildy needed to make two fine stops.

But despite our improved performance, we still looked to be heading for a 2-0 defeat. Then came the last glorious five minutes. Francis's free kick was well stopped by Smith, but the ball stayed in play and Spencer forced it in. Then Baldwin got an equally scrappy equaliser.

How we got a point from that today, I don't know. Frankly I don't care.

No doubt the mouthy Swindon Fan (not the one who thought Revs was reasonable) will be along later to wind us all up about how low things are looking...

how Swindon didn't walk away with three points is beyond me. Got to give credit for our 2nd half even though it was hardly great but at least there were signs of fight.

Probably the only two times we won a second ball got us our two goals today.

The first half was too shocking to find a single word to sum it up.

You mean the 1st one that didn't properly cross the line & the 2nd one where the ball went out of play before it got tucked away, so I hear? :whistling:

yeah they're the ones! Sitting at the opposite end of the ground I had no idea that the ball might have gone out/didn't cross the line or whatever and frankly I don't give a bishop's bottom.

I'll take this blatantly robbed point and hope that Tilson has learned that especially at home a 4-4-2 is a must even when the chips are down. I was quite frankly bemused by the 5-3-2.

Mixed feelings following the game. Delighted we got a point when frankly the first half was the worst ive seen in a long long time. But at the same time very annoyed that Tilly started with 5-3-2, annoyed that its taken 6 games for Tilly to realise that anything other than 4-4-2 doesnt work. Also disappointed that Paterson was dropped. If we're going to drop players for playing 2 poor games then we'd struggle to put a team out!

Swindon will be gutted, they look a real good team, especially in midfield, moved it around quickly and incisively. Particularly impressed with Paynter and the left winger Ward. Oh to have a pacey winger who can put a good ball in the box! Was it not for Mildey we couldve got a real hiding but fairness to TIlly for making the changes. Surely Spencer must start.

The two Col U lads, Baldwin was top class, reminded me of Morrison. What does it say though when Col Us 5th choice centre back is better than any of our defenders?

I dont think today was a turning point but there was a lot more fight in the 2nd half than has been shown recently. Still, the midfield was v poor, Moose had an absolute shocker and Grant not much better. Without Baldwin against Col U I can see us getting a good hiding to be honest.

Ratings

Mildey- 7, poor first half but made 2 superb saves 2nd half and kicks almost set up a goal
Francis- 7, once again our main creative outlet, put some v good balls in
Barrett- 6, solid
Mvoto- 2, calamitous, way off the pace and only played as Baldwin will miss Col U
Baldwin- 8, v impressive, good in the air and on the deck.
Malone-5, sorry but Herd for me. Poor set pieces, doesnt get forward and out of position too often.
Grant- 5, in poor form.
Christophe- 6, poor first half but got suck in well 2nd half
Moose-4, worst half hes ever played.
Laurent-5, almost scored first half but same old tricks with no end product
Vernon-5, lack of service but looked no better than any of the other 100 targetmen Tilly has gone through.

Subs

Scannel- 6, at least offered an option out wide but didnt really create much.
Spencer- 7, like him, very willing and a nuisance to defender. Couldnt really see goal, looked a scrappy one.

ok here are my ratings.

Mildy 7- no chance with the goals
Francis 6 - underated by some of the fans imo
Mvoto 4 - obviously not ready to come back from injury
Baldwin 5 - jury is out for me
Barrett 5 - Huffed n puffed did nothing
Malone 5 - errr what position am I playing in??
Moussa 3 - for turning up if only in body and not in mind
Grant 7 - only one who really wanted it imo. Definate class player in the making
Laurent 6 - needs to pass more
JFC 5 - Huffed n puffed did naff all slighlty better than Scannel
Spencer 5 - showed signs of potential
vernon 5 - showed some signs of his experience
Scannel 4 - Huffed n puffed did naff all worse than JFC
Heard 5 - Probably did better in the short time that he was on than some of the other players had done all game

Tilson n Brush 2 - What was they thinking about in making so many positional changes and playing 3 centre backs who had more a less never met each other!

Ref: 7 hardley knew he was there!

Comment. I wonder who changed the tactics at 1/2 time Tilson, Brush or Barrett. Barrett IMO.

Scannel- 6, at least offered an option out wide but didnt really create much.

Scannel 4 - Huffed n puffed did naff all worse than JFC

My god, he comes on and has a HUGE role in setting up both goals but he ''didnt do much'' and did ''naff all''

Get off the guys back come on. We looked much better second half (fair enough we couldnt have got any worse!)

Scannell didn't do much - oh - other than set up both goals. Not much then.

In my opinion, he came on and provided an outlet for us, put in some decent troublesome crosses and like i said had huge parts in setting up both goals.

But lets face it, he's never gonna do no rite is he, even if he banged in a hatrick he'd get blasted i bet

Oh just read the match report on the swindon website, doesnt really sound like a player who didnt do anything ;)

Mildenhall 4 - Kicking was awful and could have been sharper off his line for both goals. His rant at Grant was pathetic and he seems more interested in having a moan at the fans.

Francis 5 - Steady enough, decent delivery again.
MVoto 3 - Can't be fit
Baldwin 6 - Someone with a bit of presence at the back
Barrett 5 - Not a great performance but I feel for him with the amount of different partners he's had this season.
Malone 4 - No better than Herd at LB, bit better at CM.

JFC 5 - Better than Tuesday but that wasn't hard, found a blue shirt with a pass on two separate occasions !!
Grant 6 - Not in good form but wins us a fair few free kicks
Moussa 4 - He's been poor for a while now but the first half today he was awful, His 'attempted volley' summed up his day.

Laurent 6 - Very good effort in the first half, some good skills in the second. Great run in the second half but shot when he should have squared it to Spencer.
Vernon 6 - Jury still out but he worked hard and got stuck in.

Subs -
Spencer 6 - Has to start, looks lively. Scrappy goal but they all count.
Scannell 6 - Better coming on as a sub - done well for the equaliser.
Herd 5 - Always been a fan, long throws are a threat.

My apologies I didnt realise he set up both goals, was hard to see from my seat. For the proceeding 40 odd mins he hadnt done that much but fair play to him and at the moment I would give him a run down the left, certainly a better option than the Moose.

So will give him a 7!
