Nail on head !

Not just Payne though,Barnett will make a run but rarely gets the ball,so he too begins to lose the will to bust a gut.

You weren't even at RH so moan on another thread, this one is about yesterdays game

I don't think you're getting it. I'm not just talking about yesterdays game. They both look to pass sideways first, if the sideways ball isn't on they tend to turn around and pass it back. How many assists do you think Deegan and Atkinson have between them in all those games? It doesn't matter if wide players are on the pitch or not, they play the same way. I just think it's time for a new positive mentality and midfielders that can create and score goals. Payne gets so fed up with it when he's screaming for the ball and they ignore him to go sideways or back. He ends up dropping deep to get the ball himself.

So which two players would you have played instead of Deegan and Atkinson

I'd have personally started McQueen instead of one of them, Leonard can play anywhere in the midfield, and works very well with Atkinson, so would have probably dropped Deegan for him.

I'm not talking about yesterday but in general, these 2 players are IMO fringe league 1 or average league 2,playing them together offers little forward play ,their vision is limited, yeah every now and again they will ping a lovely ball, but we need better quality next season or we will be in the mix at the wrong end of the table.

All negative players have to pass the ball forward at some point, and that just shows why they should do it more often. In general, Deegan and Atkinson are looking to pass the ball sideways.

And ............ Atko passes the ball forward to Timlin who smashed the ball into the Barnsley net (just thought I would come up with another example ......... and did he score away at Oldham as well?)

But overall I do agree with the above quote .......... Atko is often too slow on the ball which cuts down forward options ...... and I say this even though I often like Atko in the side to provide some defensive stability.

For me though it is not necessarily about individual players in midfield .......... it's about the mix in midfield ..... and it's about who they have in front of them and behind them ............. you have to get the balance right - sometimes Atko (or Deegan) are ideal in a game as the mix is right ............. and sometimes it all looks a bit pear shaped. :'(

After my exploits pre-match I sat in the West hoping for a game where we dominated a side near the bottom of the League.

Yet again we had trouble playing against a low side.

Speaking to Sarfminster I said that it looked like 2 average sides seeing out the season --- despite Fleetwood's need for points and our slim chance of play offs, which should have made for a rip-roaring game.

Their opener was a cracker --- as applauded by many in the West --- somehow you knew it was going to be a tight game. Our 2 goals to put us in front were both well taken but I think we all knew there would be an equaliser.

It seems JW hadn't had time to wake up and the cross from their left was met and hit the back of our net to leave the fans disappointed, yet again.

At least we can't get relegated and perhaps under our new manager we will push on next year.

Had a good view of their opener from the East, it faded away perfectly, Bentley no chance.

Their second was the best cross of the match but if we want to point fingers best look at Coker, if anyone was asleep.

Atkinson Deegan White Macca Weston Tommo and Coker have this season and last amassed 465 appearances and scored 17 goals between them.one of these goal machines pops up and scores on average every 27 games:stunned:

You've forgotten Bentley most games this season and I can't remember a one decent shot on target.

However as we have already scored more goals than last season and we have gone up a division you must be delighted with the rest of the squad.

Worral was my man of the match by a long shot, he put some good crosses in, he was asking for the ball a lot, but most times they did not look up and around (as normal) he tried quite hard, the rest were poor and Weston was like a clown, it was like he was on the beers. Coker? What has gone wrong with him for the few months? He used to get down the wing, not any more, and he had lots of chances to.

Hence why we have fallen away over the past 20 games, too much reliance on Payne and Barnett,Wozza and Adam chip in now and again whilst Lenny has managed 3 this season.

Yesterday's scorers were?

Just as a matter of interest, two sides currently occupying the top three have scored less goals than us and three sides trying to stay up have conceded less goals than us.

I'd say our issues, if we actually have any, are as much at the other end of the park.

Had I not been at the game yesterday, reading this thread I would have assumed that we had been badly beaten given some of the comments on here. As it was I think we badly drew. The close season promises to be a barrel of laughs, but I'm voting for Greenock Morton's shirt.

What probably affected Coker getting down the wing was probably the fact that he was one of 3 centre backs ... !

I always leave it until Monday before reading or commenting on this thread, so here goes!

I thought it was a poor game that Fleetwood seemed to be more up for than us - had they gone home empty handed then they would have felt right to be aggrieved. However I'm a Southend fan so am annoyed that we let a lead slip by not being more professional in managing the game to the end. I don't berate Brown for bringing on White and switching to a back 4 - 90% of managers in the country would have done the same thing in the same circumstances. However I don't think taking Worrall off was correct as he was doing a great job on the right hand side and him and White doubling up there would have been a better move - I would have taken Payne off who, aside from the goal, did little else of merit all afternoon having been marked out of the game by Fleetwood.

Trying to be true to the title of the thread, here are my ratings:

Bentley - 6 - average performance and still seems rooted to his line too much
Thompson - 6 - at least looks up for every game and pretty solid defensively
Barrett - 6 - well taken header for the goal, but worries me with his lack of pace and positioning sometimes.
Coker - 6 - fish out of water at Centre Back
Deegan - 6 - in and out of the game but a better passer than he is given credit for
Atkinson - 5 - too often anonymous in midfield
Leonard - 6 - nice to see him back, would be even nicer to see him back to his best. Not yet match fit.
Payne - 6 - well taken goal, but other than that he was ineffective
Worrall - 7 - decent performance all over the pitch, easily our M-O-M
McLaughlin - 6 - some dangerous crosses put in but weak defensively
Barnett - 6 - didn't look fit on Saturday

Subs:

Weston - 5 - tries hard, but just not good enough
McQueen - 5 - no chance to impress going forward and should have been stronger for their equaliser.
White - 5 - should have stopped the cross coming in for the equaliser

Overall a very flat afternoon with an end of season feel about it.

The system didn't work and I'm wondering why we loaned the defender from ipswich as he would surely have been an improvement on Thompson yesterday who had a total nightmare game and looked like a non league player. His distribution was dire.
It's funny how we all see a different game. AT was my MOTM on Saturday and came second in the twitter MOTM poll behind AB!

. He has not been the same player for months, even when he has got free..... Nothing like he was on the ball....

I don't disagree with this, he hasn't met his own standards . However the question regarding why he wasn't attacking the wings was purely based on his position on Saturday. However , if we can look at next season , let's hope he can have an injury free summer ( his injury may have affected him this season - just like Timlin) as there is no doubting the talent he has. We can always look for positives in the long term if we choose to do, rather than look at the here and now .

I think we were lucky that their forwards couldn't take the chances they had. A little bit of sadness for me in thinking that may be the last time I see Adam Barrett play for us (due to that being my last game of the season rather than his). And possibly Jack Payne too.
