Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-0 AFC Fylde

I said after Dagenham that I hoped it would kick off a run, plus boost confidence. And so it did. Barnet was so bad the only way was up really ..another valuable 3 points banked. Tonight’s scoring striker was Josh Walker, a lovely finish just when I was thinking he’d wasted the chance to lay it off to Bridge who’d made a great run. I think we looked solid today and when the defence was breached, Harness was there to save the day.

Ok we can talk about the missed chances and how we should’ve been 4-0 up at HT but I’d prefer to look at the fact we created them .. Kendall will be waking up with cold sweats at missing that sitter but I think he .. in fact all 4 forwards .. caused them problems. We battled and looked a team again..winning challenges and knocking it about well.

Good to see some positivity back in the West stand.

Now a break from NL as we chase Wembley glory and maybe a couple of new faces on from the start Kev?! Why not ..
May have just been a turn of phrase @Leigh_Seasider but Im gonna have to respectfully disagree with that. Feels to me like things were on a precipice in terms of things turning on maher, and to his credit he's made changes that have really worked. Lets hope it continues

Comfortable victory - for Southend United at Roots Hall (Image: FOCUS IMAGES)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United made it five wins in six games with a comfortable 2-0 victory against struggling AFC Fylde at Roots Hall tonight.

The Shrimpers wasted a whole host of clear cut chances before Josh Walker fired them in front of the stroke of half-time.

And Blues made sure of another three points when Fylde defender Emeka Obi headed the ball into his own net midway through the second half.

Kevin Maher’s side started brightly with James Golding headed an early James Morton corner over the crossbar before the visitors hit back with Danny Ormerod seeing his header from Nick Haughton’s corner impressively tipped over the crossbar by Blues goalkeeper Nathan Harness.

The on loan MK Dons shot-stopper then smothered a curling effort from Haughton before the Shrimpers wasted two excellent opportunities to go in front.

With 16 minutes on the clock, Jack Bridge set Gus Scott-Morriss clear in the right hand side of the penalty area – only for the wing-back to fire wide of the right post.

Moments later, Charley Kendall somehow failed to convert Macauley Bonne’s left wing cross from close range before Walker also wasted an excellent chance to go in front.

The forward was found by a fine right wing cross from Kendall but his low shot was blocked by the legs of Fylde goalkeeper Ben Winterbottom before Walker also fired the rebound wide of the left post.

With the Shrimpers staying on top, another opportunity soon came and went when Morton’s brilliant left wing cross was headed over by an unmarked Bonne from close range.

Flyde survived the spell of pressure but Blues were soon threatening again with Bridge seeing his curling cross-shot punched clear by Winterbottom in unconvincing fashion.

And the Shrimpers made their pressure count on the stroke of half-time with Walker charging through the centre of the park before sending a low 25 yard shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

The strike was Walker’s fourth goal of the season and his first at Roots Hall in a competitive fixture since signing in the summer.

Blues made a change at the break with the newly signed Tom Hopper coming on to replace Bonne in attack.

But it was Walker who soon took centre stage again as he got goalside of his defender before quite clearly appearing to be brought down.

However, referee Robert Massey-Ellis somehow though otherwise and opted to show Walker a yellow card after adjudging him to have dived.

Shortly after the controversial decision, Fylde came close to equalising when Joe Riley impressively swapped passes with Haughton being seeing his low shot well saved by the onrushing Harness.

Blues were soon back posing problems once again and doubled their lead in the 66th minute when Scott-Morriss’ dangerous right wing cross was inadvertently headed into the back of his own net by Obi.

Shorty after the second goal, the Shrimpers made their second change of the night with Keenan Appiah-Forson replacing Walker.

Blues remained on top with Scott-Morriss curling a 25 yard free-kick over the crossbar before Appiah-Forson fired wide of the right post when well placed.

With play soon switching back to the other end of the field, Fylde substitute Gavin Massey saw a 20 yard shot pushed to safety by Harness.

The Shrimpers soon responded with a double change which saw George Wind and Oli Coker enter the action in place of Scott-Morriss and Noor Husin.

Ben Goodliffe then also replaced Bridge to help Blues comfortably see out the closing stages of the contest.

That was a really good team performance.

We utterly demoralised Fylde who ended the game in disarray. Their passing which started out crisp, ended up truly ragged - a clear sign that we did a job on them.

Fylde are probably the most one man team in the division so it was pleasing to see Maher pick an XI to win this game rather than try and win the last game. This meant Noor returning to the line-up with the job of nullifying danger man Nick Haughton who pulls Fylde’s strings. Noor rose to the challenge and had his best game for a long while. He must have picked Haughton’s pocket half a dozen times and gave him no time on the ball or shooting opportunities. He combined this with very good footwork and some (albeit some went awry) good passing. My man of the match although alongside him Morton continues to impress. We will need to find the right balance in midfield and the Morton-Husin combination has a good balance between passing ability, work-rate, ability to beat a man and a left foot, right foot etc although it does look a little short on goals.

On another day this could hve been double figures. The biggest disappointment was the finishing. Golding missed from a corner; Gus after being played in by Bridge; Kendall from close range when seemingly easier to score; Bonne headed over a cross; Walker drew an excellent save when he really should have scored and this was all inside the first half of the first half.

Eventually Walker broke the deadlock. His goals to date have been poacher goals but this was the Walker from his Dagenham days, twisting and turning and finishing superbly from outside the area. A nod here to Maher’s man-management as Maher when things weren’t going for him at Dagenham rather than sub him and dent his confidence he kept him on. This was the reward for that and it was timely as this looked like a game that might slip away if we were that profligate in front of goal. He might have had a penalty second half as well - the booking was a surprise as he went down under contact.

Hopper replaced Bonne at half-time (I assume injury related?), underlining the importance of having someone else who can lead the line. Hopper didn’t get on the scoresheet but his presence forced the own goal (if only our players could finish as well at the Fylde no.5’s delightful finish).

On the left Bridge has had to change his style in the new formation. Without support down the left he has to cut inside a lot more. He may have had more joy had some of the passing to him been crisper and more accurate as he was enjoying a lot of space.

Maher responded to the two goal cushion by bringing KAF on for Walker who went off to deserved applause and this brought about our best spell as we sapped Fylde’s confidence with our movement in our 3-5-2 shape leaving them chasing shadows. Had it been a boxing match the ref would have stopped it (well maybe not this ref).

It wasn’t until the final minutes, as Maher gave minutes ahead of the cup game, that Fylde got hold of the ball and really looked to threaten. Harness had a confidence building game, doing what little was asked of him but he had to be alert for a few saves.

Even the subs had chances to score KAF firing wide from the edge of the area and Coker who shoud have done better when things opened up for him.

Overall an excellent tactical performance that with crisper finishing may have brought a smile even to the most curmudgeonly. Our season to date hasn’t been defined by the defeats to Barnet and York but rather by dropping too many points - especially at home - to teams in the bottom half. Remember we have won away at the likes of Halifax, Rochdale and Solihull. This was therefore a step in the right direction as we close to three points off the playoffs. We need to take care of business against the likes of Dagenham and Fylde and consecutive 2-0 wins have done just that. An important game Saturday now awaits to keep the momentum going and the dreams of Wembley alive.

For those asking about Bonne, he was subbed at halftime as had a stomach upset and was sent home. (According to Maher on BBC Essex)
Was a real shame, i thought Bonne was playing really well ( apart from the squandered chances that all the CFs missed). I would have taken off Kendall for Hopper if a HT change was made to give Hopper an intro to the team, so that makes sense. Hope he gets better soon!

MOM was Noor. I thought he was getting back to his best tonight, did the tough stuff and made some lovely runs, caused a raft of trouble and in general was a complete pain in Fylde's butt.

Great to see us creating the chances that we missed, point is we can crack on now and more will end up in the back of the net given time. We look much more agile, much faster snd sharper, a complete contrast from 10 days ago! 😀

All in all, a nice, entertaining and enjoyable game, a good 3 points and a nice clean sheet. And a special mention for their no 5. That was the most beautifully placed own goal i think we will ever see!! Thank you Fylde, that goal was an excellent present 🎁

A solid performance but again not the outstanding one than many are saying tonight and were also saying after Saturdays win.
The Motm was a close run thing between Morton or Taylor. Noors performance was nowhere near the level that his had in previous seasons. His still way off his best as Paul Clark aluded to more than once during his commentary.
We again were not clinical and again slowed down at 2-0.
I read an earlier comment about Haughton being in Noors pocket. It couldn't be further from the truth. Haughton was a class act still,
in a Fylde team that caused us more trouble than Dagenham.
Saturday will not be the stroll that many believe it will be.

UTB..

So many good performances. Only downside was 4 golden chances missed before we scored. But at least those chances were created in the first place. Some lovely football being played, especially with the little triangle passes to get out of trouble and set up an attack. I thought Husin should not have started due to loss of form, I was wrong. He was back to his best, and stole the ball so many times, getting his foot in. Morton was spraying the ball about lovely. Taylor brilliant as usual for his 100th game. Golding so dependable, and just getting better. Best game by Bridge for Months. Kendall, closes defenders and the goalie down so well, and gets them in a right panic. I can't think of anyone who had a bad game. Two great saves by Harness as well.

The only 5 teams we have beaten at home are Boston, Eastleigh, Tamworth, Ebbsfleet and Fylde only one on a Saturday, and 3 of the 5 are the current bottom 3.

Yeah I guess you’re right it would’ve got very toxic had we lost but Maher & the team shifted up a gear & changed course .. and we luckily didn’t get to see what would’ve happened. I think these two wins have eased the pressure on Kev for now.

Good result for us tonight. Starting with three forwards again, does seem to put us in a more positive set up for games. Noor played well I’m pleased to report,as did Morton. Harness looked assured and agile when he needed to be. Good performance and well taken goal from Josh too. Mrs Templar gave him man of the match and I can’t say I disagree with her. Overall a decent performance, though perhaps we missed a few good chances, it’s still another three points on the board! UTB

Good stuff, not much better then a comfortable home win, these goals on the stroke of h/t change the dymanic so much ahead of the second.I love it !

We cant really complain with a 2nil win yes we missed some gilt edge opportunities but I would be more concerned if we didn't create these opportunities.
Be Interested to learn what side Kev decides to put out this Saturday against Sittingbourne hopefully he sticks with the 3 strikers as it seems to be proving successful
