Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-0 AFC Fylde

We could do with AFC Fylde returning to winning ways in their next two games which are against our rivals for the play offs Oldham and Halifax, both of whom have two games in hand over us. Highly unlikely unless Haughton has a return to form.

Although we are only 3 points adrift of the play offs those games in hand (and Rochdale have 4) mean in reality we've got a big hill to climb.
But 54 PTS to play for. The gap is trivial at this stage

fully take on board the point you make Barling. :Winking:

My first target was Solihull and we are just 2 points behind them, equal games played. Keep tracking them down and beat them at home we are above them, we were 8 behind then a few weeks ago, when i first started tracking them. Now they have a new manager, Matt Taylor. Opening gambit "I want a front footed team that is happy to suffer when they haven't got the ball." they're getting the hang of that with three straight defeats. Let's hope that continues.

I am coming from a point of being just three points behind Altrincham, with them just having one game in hand. They also have to come to us, so they are very catchable.

Gateshead are the stretch, 10 points, same games, but we have made up 4 points on them in the last 6 league games we have both played. at that rate, if we can keep it up, we catch them in the run in to the end of the season. Our squad gets stronger, theirs has arguably got weaker with some big departures for them. They have 0 wins in the last four games.

I am genuinely not trying to get carried away, but this season is far from over and it is doable to catch at least 2 of the top seven, especially if the home form picks up.

Strap in, because Gateshead away last game of the season might just be massive.

With1.625pts per game

Without 1.5 points per game

(nb that’s including cup games - so Charlton was taken as a point as it was a draw over 90 minutes)

Our biggest win of the season and the most goals in a game were both with them starting
What about there assists, got them figures please?

Sorry, have very limited info on assists.

Sofascore reckons our top assists players this season are Oli Coker and Charley Kendall with 4 (presume that includes Kendall’s figures for Woking). They reckon Gus has only one assist all season so I’d take the assists data with a pinch of salt. I’d use key passes per game instead as a) that’s not a counting stat which favours players who play all the time and b) removes whether the strikers can actually finish when you put it on a plate for them like last night.

On key passes per game. Noor is level with Morton with 0.7 key passes per game. Jack Bridge once more leads this with an impressive 1.3. Cav Miley is on just 0.1 (level with Collin and Harry Taylor) but that’s not surprising as his game is about interceptions (4.0 per game) and clearances. (0.9) - both which lead our central midfielders.

Thanks for that!

Opening goal - Josh Walker celebrates (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

AFC Fylde boss Kevin Phillips thought Southend United’s opening goal in their 2-0 win against his side should not have been allowed.

Josh Walker fired the Shrimpers in front on the stroke of half-time at Roots Hall.

But Phillips felt the Blues forward fouled Ethan Mitchell in the build up to his goal.

“We believe it’s a foul on Ethan,” Phillips told the club's Twitter account.

“I’ve seen it back and the ref is right there but he doesn’t give it.

“We let the player just drive at us though and we don’t engage.

“We let him shoot and it goes in the bottom corner.

“It came at a time where we’re thinking can we get in at half-time, calm them down and give them some messages for the second half so it was disappointing to concede.”

However, Phillips admitted to being impressed by Blues.

“Southend are a good side and they showed that tonight,” said the former Sunderland striker.

“I think the started very brightly, they were on the front foot, had lots of energy and caused us problems.

“We struggled to cope with their shape at the beginning too.

“We figured it out and got the message onto the pitch.

“I said to the coaching team it was about staying in the game and trying to get a foothold ourselves.”

Fylde made the match more even in the second half.

But Phillips was frustrated the Coasters did not make more of their entries into the final third before handing Blues their second goal of the night with Emeka Obi heading into the back of his own net.

“In the second half I thought we had more of a foothold in the game,” said Phillips.

“Yes, they still caused us some issues but we had some good opportunities and got into good areas but we haven’t punished them.

“From our point of view, their second goal we don’t stop the cross.

“The body position for the cross isn’t right and unfortunately it’s an own goal.

“We’re really disappointed but I have to say Southend are a very good team.”

The defeat kept Fylde third from bottom on the table but Phillips is now turning his attentions towards Saturday’s clash with Oldham Athletic.

"What we have to do now is not feel sorry for ourselves," said Phillips.

"We’ll dust ourselves down and be ready for a huge game on Saturday.

I think Kevin Phillips is right, it was a foul by Walker, but then we had a penalty ruled out, so it evens out a bit. That goal, I think most of us were saying ''pass it now'', in our heads. I couldn't see him scoring from there. But what a perfect strike.
Yes, I thought it was a foul when I watched it live on the stream. The ref failed to give several other obvious could too.

Watching it live I did think that Walker was going all the way and would shoot. Bridge was unmarked to his left and was calling for the ball and he started to raise his arm in frustration when Josh shot rather than passed. That swiftly turned into celebration.

Kev said in his post match interview the pass was on - what’s his problem with having a shot? 🤷‍♂️

Mind you if Walker had passed it to Bridge he would’ve stopped, turned around and played it back to Ralph….😜😜

I'm usually with all you say, Ms B, but I believe we signed JW from King's Langley (?) three years ago to the day nearly.
You know what, my mistake. I thought we had brought him right though the ranks, and I do recall him having been marked out as one "for the future". but I had forgotten we brought him in from somewhere around the M25.

If so, as a youngster on our books through the late teen years, he would still be classified as an academy player and attract some sort of fee if we still had our academy working properly as he is under 24. However, thanks to "he who should no longer be mentioned" allowing our academy to wither and die, the EFL / NL(?) academy compensation rules no longer apply but a fee can be agreed between clubs. I guess it would depend on Jack Wood's destination and potential.

On the other side of this, getting an academy back must be on the COSU roadmap to our recovery and financial sustainability. I know it has been mentioned, no idea on timelines.

Agree entirely, Ms B. Sad that it's not worked out for Jack and hope he'll deliver on his promise - ideally not against us somewhere down the line.

But he also said he thought he did the right thing by having a shot.
true - but I found it interesting that when our striker was charging thru bearing down on goal, Kev’s first thought was ‘pass’.

Im not trying to stir anything up here but it does - for me anyway - add fuel to the fire that Kev does like his negative tactics

Walker was 25 yards out with two defenders between him and the goal. Bridge was unmarked to his left waiting to be played through on goal.

How is playing someone clean through on goal a negative tactic?

I too was thinking pass, imho it looked like the better option at the time. It's not like Walker has been firing in 20yd shots on a regular basis
