Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1 v Port Vale 3

coming from the man that believes Patterson will be our 20 goal a season hero!!

Paterson I also believe will be our main goal getter this season. However, I cannot see us getting many goals at all with nothing but 60 yard hoofs up the park from the defence a midfield that can only pass sideways, and wingers who will not beat their man or cross the ball!!!

(keep telling myself it's only three games into the season, all will be well )

You guys shouldn't be too down hearted our defence does not let many goals in at all we only let 25 goals in away last season and strangely enough 25 at home, also we beat QPR by 3 goals to 1 in the cup and last season smashed 5 past Chesterfield at their place.
The team that Sturrock has assembled needs a bit of time to gel together and I think you will be fine when that happens, I would expect you to finish mid table at least this season.
Good luck chaps :)

Morris - 5 Unlucky I suppose as the defence just did not help him, made some good saves but also some poor decisions, and kicking was woeful.

Morris 7: Perhaps he was slightly impetuous with their second goal in going to ground, but he probably wasn't to know Easton was going to get a foot on it. His handling was solid all game though, but perhaps he needs to sort out the goal kicks, as they're a little too flat.
I think you need to allow for the strong breeze there was affecting the keepers kicks. In the 1st half the Vale keeper kicked it straight out of play a couple of times at Morris' end & every ball he hit went miles. 2nd half he was hitting the halfway line.

Morris was keeping it low 1st half to drill it through the wind & I thought he did better than our 2 previous keepers who would have simply kept to plan A. How many times on a windy day did Darryl used to hoof it into the stand simply cos Plan A was to kick it at a player standing wide & didn't take account of the elements.

The wind contributed to a considerable amount yesterday, particularly in the first half...

After the second or third misplaced Prosser header, Widdrington came storming out of the technical area to lambast him and tore him to shreds, telling him to concentrate on the flight of the ball and get it away, as they were picking the ball up in the centre of the park easily. Prosser turned round and shouted back that the ball was turning all over the place in the air because of the wind...

Morris 8
Clohessy 5
Prosser 4
Coughlan 5
Barker 5
Soares 4
Zaaboub 4
Grant 5
Easton 5
Sturrock 5
Paterson 5

Subs

Corr 5
Phillips 5

PV looked a reasonable side, played as team and just controlled all but the first 5 minutes. Nobody in our side looked capable of turning the game in our favour. Maybe could have done with meeting them in a couple of months time when hopefully we will have sorted out what is our best 11. Trouble is that we now have two tricky league fixtures coming up so PS needs to get this sorted ASAP. He probably needs to remind them that they can perform as they showed against Bristol City.

Morris 6.5 - couldn't be faulted for the shambles in front of him
Clohessy 5 - got forward fairly well, although he refuses to look up and check there's anyone in the area before crossing, but defensively not great
Barker 4.5 - very disappointing. Positionally poor and looked slow as well.
Coughlan 5.5 - didn't play that badly from an individual perspective and used the ball better than most, but very slow and didn't organise the defence
Prosser 4 - seemed to have some personal demons when playing against his old club as looked a completely different player to the assured one who'd impressed in our three previous games. I think even Tilly would have hauled him off at half-time.
Grant 5 - not nearly influential enough
Easton 5 - ditto
Zaaboub 6 - our best moments all came through him and he's the only one who looks to have a touch of class about him although blatantly not fit
Soares 5 - he's burst inside menacingly quite a few times these last couple of games without any real hint of an end product
Sturrock 6 - an intelligent display but up against that ref, the more rumbustious* Corr would have been the better option
Paterson 5 - looks a bit stronger this season and whilst he played the last half hour out of position, he did little in the first hour - some neat lay-offs aside - to justify being retained up front. He seems so slow to react.

Subs - would have liked to have used all 7
Phillips 5 - an improvement over Prosser, but a rather agricultural display
Corr 6 - with hindsight should have started. Physically able to give as good as he gets, combined with some decent feet for a player of his size
Spencer 4 - if it wasn't for his haircut, I don't think I'd have noticed him. Looks lightweight and ineffective

I know a lot of people have been desperate for us to play 4-4-2 with 2 "proper" wingers, but yesterday IMO showed why that's a bad idea. We were far too open with Soares and Zaaboub offering little defensively. If we play 4-4-2, I'd far rather see us play with a wide midfielder who tucks in to help in central midfield and with defensive duties in the Pettefer/Bentley/Tilson mould than playing with the two out and out wingers.

What happened to Simpson? I thought he was probably our best player v Aldershot.

Morris 7 - The only player to come away with any credibility.
Clohessy 5 - Keep the ball on the deck please.
Prosser 4 - It all went wrong for him and rightfully hauled off at half time.
Coughlan 5 - Same as Sean, ball on the deck please.
Barker 5 - I'd been impressed up until yesterday, he looked ****ed.
Zaaboub 4 - Seen him twice and I've seen enough.
Grant 5 - Pretty anonymous, transfer playing on his mind?
Easton 4 - The invisible man.
Soares 4 - Crossing was awful.
Sturrock 5 - Didn't do anything, well apart from being constantly wrestled by their centre half.
Paterson 5 - Get on the weights son.

Corr 6 - In hindsight should probably have started, would have proved a sterner test for their big brute defence.
Phillips 5 - Better than Prosser but he didn't need to do much.
Spencer 4 - Would have been a 5 but he loses a mark for shaving his head.

Precisely... I'd much sooner see us play with a midfield three of Grant, Easton and Simpson, with Soares/Hall on one side, Paterson on the other pushing forward and Corr/Sturrock taking tha mantle.

Glass Half Empty

I know this must have been bad as even Paul 'Team FBM' Boreham hasn't had anything to say about this! :O ;) I'm going to look on the 'Positives' thread - he must be on there, surely?

Agree with most of what you say, but thought Morris was the star of the show his kicking was always quick and apart from one kick into touch quickly turned defence into attack. A breathe of fresh air and for a short goal keeper gets up well and claims the ball.

I suppose I did probably judge that all on the one or two kicks that were poor, where most of the time he was very good.. but after the game it was the negative parts that were remembered.. may have to edit my score for him now I've calmed down a tad

Morris's quick throws out to players as well as his kicks I thought were very good yesterday, long may that continue.

Morris 6 - Kept us in the game as long as he could. Needs to improve his kicking from hands - it was coming down with snow on it
Clohessy 5 - Not bad - put some decent balls in, but he also had more time the ball on a few occasions when he could have worked the ball better with soares
Prosser 4 - Not sure what happened, looked very nervous against his old team.
Coughlan 4 - Hoof!!! Not good, done for pace too.
Barker 5 - Our best defender, but when the other three are off their game its gonna make you look pants too.
Zaaboub 5 - Started the game really well, put in some lovely crosses, but wants it on plate to do this, free kick in the second half was awful!!!
Grant 6 - Showed some neat stuff, but couldn't do it all on his own
Easton 4 - Was he playing?
Soares 4 - Seriously disappointed with this guy, should be dropped for Hall against Wolves.
Sturrock 5 - Worked hard and won a few balls first half, then disappeared.
Paterson 4 - Whats all the hype about? Poor.

Corr 6 - I like this guys attitude, likes to put it about, i thought he showed some nice touches.
Phillips 4 - No No No - couldn't even hoof the ball clear, sliced it left, right and left again - really worried by him and the other 2 CB's i've seen.
Spencer 4 - Ineffective

Nice comments, if that's the best Easton can do then bring in bad boy Sawyer. Patterson offers very little imo, weak, poor in the air and doesn't anticipate anything. As for Frank Spencer, time for yet another club me thinks!

Simpson playing the Pettefer/Bentley role on the right might be a good move in certain games, but I'd still want us to keep two up front to be honest.
