Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1 v Port Vale 3

Walking out of that Boston match was like leaving a funeral. It ran the original Vale game close in it's awfulness.

Thank you for those kind words - I thought my post was quite objective actually - but hey what would I know - I have only been watching them since 1975- clearly doesnt compare to your 1985. One quick question for you - have you ever had a positive thought about anything? I tell you what - keep hold of your post and lets see who is the 'clueless buffoon' at the end of the season. Don't worry I wont rub it in - I don't believe calling people names is a worthwile past time. As always looking forward to your next post.................[/QU

Ive had very posotive thoughts about your wife, I look forward to the end of the season....

Just spoke to Bilel on facebook and he said he was very disappointed with today's performance and he hopes to improve the defence if he gets a chance

Good - then your life isn't all doom and gloom and there is light at the end of that dark tunnel. Keep up the good work Speak to you again at the end of the season.

Paul Sturrock should donate his wages away as well as the rest. Why were the two classiest players Simpson and Mohsni left out? Secondly, Prossers replacement Phillips put in the biggest donkey performance i have ever seen at Roots Hall!

I have to agree with this. I have already said this on another thread, I just can't understand why they were on the bench, along with Hall.

Could be saving them (Simpson and Mohsni) for the Wolves Game? Although in the long term the League must be the priority in the short term the game on Tuesday would be a better game to win (or at least bring them back to RH). Hope to be at the Wolves game on Tuesday so we will see.

I think Mohsni needs to settle in a bit as he's a bit too enthusiastic for seasoned old pro's who could probably get him sent off

Woeful.

Worst defending I have seen for a long time. Clohessy was disasterous, Barker poor, Prosser rightly substituted.

Midfield was shocking, Easton never won a tackle or passed the ball forward once. Grant, booked again. Soares terrible and Zaboub headless.

Sturrock was fouled at least 20 times in the first half and Pato starved of any service.

Morris 8
Clohessy 1
Prosser 1
Barker 3
Coughlan 5
Easton 2
Grant 5
Zaboub 3
Soares 1
Sturrock 5
Pato 5

Cannot see what Clohessy, Prosser, Easton, Zaboub and especially Soares bring to the team, all should not start v Wolves.

I wont rate, but a few thoughts... Back 4 -woeful as a unit, no communication, how many times did 2 of them go for the same ball? Couglan will get done for pace every week and Prosser was woeful. Phillips wasn't a lot better. The 2 thugs at CB for Port Vale weren't very pretty but were effective. With those 2 on why didn't Sturrock start with Corr as a more physical presence? Sorry but Sturrock jnr wasn't the answer up front today. As for the midfield... Port Vale walked through it too many times today. Easton was anonymous, cant pass forwards and not enough leadership as captain. Not helped by 2 wide players who didnt track back or tuck inside when we lost the ball. Zaboob should never of started, looks overweight and unfit, Soares thinks he's better than he is, must be the fancy boots. Grant's body language said a lot today, he's on another planet to the rest of them and he's clearly frustrated. I fear he may be gone within 10 days and I wouldn't blame him. Sturrock blamed the players but you picked the team and the tactics Mr Sturrock and on both counts you got it wrong today.

Morris - 6 Unlucky I suppose as the defence just did not help him, made some good saves but also some poor decisions, and kicking was woeful at times(Edited after careful thought) .
Clohessy - 5 Not too sure about him so far, hopefully will get better.
Coughlan - 5 Far too slow
Prosser - 3 I'm afraid he just wasn't up to it today, everything he did just seemed to be terrible and nervy, seemed to prove Vale were right to get rid.
Barker - 5 Too slow at times, and not great positioning
Grant - 4 What happened to him? Would only get more then that because of who he is, but I'm not going to give it to him
Easton - 4 Did he actually play?? Didn't seem like it
Paterson - 5 Disappointed with him, however just did not get the service
Sturrock - 4 Had been impressed with him before this game, just wasn't good enough
Zaaboub - 6 Personally felt he was the best player when on the pitch, ran at the players and got some good balls in, but gave the ball away and still needs to get fitter, however showed more positive signs.
Soares - 4 Needs to improve his reactions and decision making, just didn't do it.

Subs
Phillips - 4 Slightly better replacement to a poor Prosser but still not good enough
Corr - 4 Tried but failed I'm afraid
Spencer - 4 Ran at Vale defence but little else happened

Ref - 1 Booked Barker for getting an elbow in the face and failed to send the opposite player off for it too. Also booked Paterson for a clean challenge, as well as some other disgraceful decisions..

Agree with most of what you say, but thought Morris was the star of the show his kicking was always quick and apart from one kick into touch quickly turned defence into attack. A breathe of fresh air and for a short goal keeper gets up well and claims the ball.

Morris 8 Three or four superb saves that kept us in the match
Clohessy 2 oh dear and what's with the 60 yard hoofs constantly?
Prosser 2 oh dear
Coughlan 4 was obviously a good player in his day, hasn't got the legs
Barker 3 disappointed with him today
Soares 1 terrible, why is he taking the free kicks?
Zaboub 3 oh dear
Grant 5 trying to do the work of the four man midfield himself
Easton 2 oh dear, not a single tackle or pass forward that I can remember
Sturrock 5 continually fouled, wants the ball down the channels, didn't get a single pass
Paterson 5 my favourite player (although not so good today), good with the ball at his feet, didn't get a single pass and stuck out on the left wing second half?

Subs

Corr 5 should have started or come on earlier when it was obvious Sturrock was getting no joy
Phillips 3 oh dear
Spencer 4 ran about a lot

Ref 1 Terrible, how can a player be booked for being elbowed in the face? Sturrock was abused first half and not a word said to the centre backs, Paterson's booking was a joke, the lad got stuck in and won the ball fairly.
Linesman 1 Neither kept up with play and missed numerous off sides for either side

For me defensively we were inept, midfield non existant and our strikers starved of any service what so ever. Sturrock was fouled at least 15 times in the first half and the ref gave about 1 foul. Paterson constantly made really good diagonal runs and pointed to the space where he wanted the ball and hey presto received nothing.

Soares has I think started every game, why? Surely Luggy can see he's not up to it? We have a natural left winger in Hall, why was Paterson stuck out on the left wing? Zaboub has absolutely no positional play and left Barker exposed constantly, similar to Soares who left Clohessy constantly exposed.

Luggy needs to take a long hard look at what he's brought in. Yesterday's team performance was below standard but so was his, and berating the players just won't get the job done.

Sturrock was continually fouled, yes he wants the ball in the channel and he didnt get a single a pass to him. None of this was his fault, so why the 4?

Agree, I was on a roll at the time, changed to 5!

A lot of people have said that Sturrock is only playing cos of his dad, but I think he is an intelligent player, who has skill, vision and is able to bring the midfield into the game with his link up play. He was fouled continuously yesterday and the ref was blind to it.

coming from the man that believes Patterson will be our 20 goal a season hero!!
