Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1 v Port Vale 3

Hi all, first post.

Morris - 7. Made some good saves, especially first half.
Clohessy - 6. Good going forward but took too long to get going. Think he needs more support from Soares.
Barker - 5. I like him, but didn't have a good game today and looked slow.
Coughlan - 5. Was expecting more from him. Looked too slow and distribution was poor.
Prosser - 4. Far too many mistakes.
Soares - 5. He's a very frustrating player. Needs to use the width and beat his man more.
Zaaboub - 6. Think he has the potential to be a good player for us once he gets himself fit. Put some decent crosses in.
Easton - 5. Didn't stand out enough for me. He did however perform the captains role by holding back Corr and preventing him from getting booked.
Grant - 5. Not one of his best games. He did his best with a few long range efforts. Unfortunately I feel Grant and Easton are too similar to play together in the middle.
Sturrock - 5. I actually thought Blair played very well first half, held the ball up well and brought others into the game. Non existent second half.
Paterson - 5. Feel sorry for Pato, League Two does not suit his game atall. Needs the ball to feet and down the channels, not in the air.
Subs:
Corr - 5. Thought he showed some neat touches but should have scored when presented with a free header.
Spencer - 4. Run around like a headless chicken.

All in all it was a very bad day at the office, although I am willing to give this team time. Let's see where we are come November.....

Well, now we know why Prosser came with the reputation he had. An absolute disgrace from front to back. No class, no ability, no passion, nothing. For what they are worth, marks (and these are generous):-

Morris 7
Clohessy 4
Coughlan 4
Prosser 2
Barker 6
Soares 3
Easton 3
Grant 5
Zaaboub 4
Paterson 5
Sturrock 6

Subs:-

Phillips 5
Corr 6
Spencer 5

Agree with most but thought "Clohessey" did better than most of a bad bunch. My only gripe really, soares cross which eneded up hitting someone in the south lower. Highlight was seeing trublue smash himself in the face with drum stick.

too many changes today, better centre backs on the bench and what the hell is going on with paterson at left midfield 2nd half, final ball was so poor our forward line never had a chance, worse game ive seen barker play, prosser did mostly everything at the back, can only count on grant making something out of nothing, another booking picked up and lacked so many ideas, cant play much worse than that this season surely ?

By november we could be too far adrift for it to matter?

Surely it is not time to throw the towel in? Today's performance was very poor when compared to the performance we put in against Bristol City but I don't think we will play that badly again this season - if we do then I think we will go down. Having said that and while I am not trying to defend the team I thought the referee was vey poor today - the 2 centre backs for Vale were continually making subtle fouls on our front line without punishment and I thought the referee was very biased towards them. Vale are a decent outfit who will do well this season. However we need to start winning and winning fast. Our front line is not a threat and we also have no width - however I still have hope and I think we will go to Wolves on Tuesday and get something out of it. Also I think it was pathetic of some people in the east to start slagging Sturrock senior off - what do you expect - he has brought in 19 new players - its going to take time but I think we all need to lower our expectations and if we reach mid-table then that should be seen as an achievement considering where we have recently come from. Keep the faith - in Sturrock we trust??!!??

ha ha haah aaa hhaaaa Aldershot?

you clueless buffoon, since i started watching in 85 I last week wrote that that was the worse southend team I have seen (and as per normal got slated by no doubt blinkered fools like yourself) I went today my mate had a spare

The goal keeper was good a real good by and what we were crying out for last season instead of that useless oaf Mildenhall

him aside, and I genuinly thing he is a bloody good goalie the rest were absoluetly awful, I am not going to call tehm a disgrace because if they are playing to there best ability then they are not disgacing themselves, but simply as anyone with half a brain would already bee aware of clearly not up to the pro game, useless has beens, donkey journey men, and rejects that cant get a game elsewhere, The thing you would hope from these old cronies is that they would have a bit of dog fight about them abit of roy mcdonough in them,??? no chance as crap as that as they are at football, I wouldnt like to have any of those soft arses guttless nomads with me in a trench!! bullied and beaten up all afternoon, really was men against boys for the second week now!! It must be totally un nerving for them as well because as a player you must have confidence in your ability, if you are having abit of a bad patch then tehre are 10 more around you to pull you together but no its like the blind leading the blind not a captain amongst them, far less a footballer!!! and who is at fault then?? they cant be blamed for there ability if a team of players is signed that lack the ability not for championship, or league 1 and 2 but League football, yet we are still charged £16?? then the buck needs to stop with someone?? well last year you called for tilson to be hung from the floodlights as he couldnt sign any players not by his fault and couldnt motivate players that were playing without being paid, you got your wish he was sacked!!!! so now the players are being paid, and are all the new managers siginings ( and I genuinly feel sorry for the bloke, what ever happens it will all massivly end in tears) then he must be to blame surely??? if on the bais it was tilsons fault last year??? luckily I didnt and still dont blame the managers or players of this club but I do blame someone I blame that person very much for what I saw today I was to young to watch the blues in the troubled Bobby Moore days but Im sure I am witnessing the same sort of thing!!!

The problem I'm having with the team is the lack of organisation. We're not Holland circa 1974, the players have a set role and they need to follow that. This means the wide players like Soares actually staying wide, rather than making the team even more narrow.

Morris - 8, really impressed by him, claims well, had no chance with any of the goals
Clohessey - 6, never stopped running, played pretty well
Prosser - 5, think he's got a lot of potential, but this wasn't his match.
Coughlan - 5, done for pace a lot, and lacked the authority I thought he had
Barker - 6, not his best game, but still pretty good
Soares - 5, woeful, no pace, no skill
Easton - 5, needs to be a metronome but his passing was awry a lot
Grant - 5, didn't play well, looked half fit and disinterested
Zaaboub - 4, would be happy if he doesn't play for a while, time for Hall
Paterson - 6, really good player, but he's never a targetman - did well with the ball at his feet
Sturrock - 6, am starting to like him a lot

Subs did alright, but would have liked to have seen Hall on.

Top post Cockles. Absolutely spot on. "Blind leading the blind", is a perfect way to sum it up

Oh dear

Morris - 8
Clohessey - 6
Prosser - 4
Coughlan - 5
Barker - 5
Soares - 5
Easton - 5
Grant - 5
Zaaboub - 4
Paterson - 6
Sturrock - 5

Morris - 7. Made some good saves, especially first half seems to be a brave keeper (a bit like Darryl).
Clohessy - 6. Good going forward but I think he needs more support from Soares and does not have confidence in him.
Barker - 5. He didn't have a good game today and looked too slow.
Coughlan - 5. Looked too slow and distribution of just humping it long was rubbish.
Prosser - 3. Far too many mistakes.
Soares - 3. Needs to beat his man more.
Zaaboub - 4. Can't pass to save his life (unless it#s to the opposition)
Easton - 5. Sorry not captian material for me.. Went missing.
Grant - 5. Not one of his best games.
Sturrock - 6. I though he did quite well, needs a parnter who understands his little flicks.
Paterson - 7. Our best player for me. Could not fault his work rate, and made many intelligent runs off the ball that no one had the intelligence to pick up on.
Corr - 5. Thought he showed some neat touches but should have scored when presented with a free header.
Spencer - 4. Looked lost. Obviously doesn't understnd how those around him play. Although to be fair most of the team don't either.

Manager - 4 tacticts were poor and needed changing but he did nothing.

IMO we could still be playing now and would never score in open play. A very Very poor performance!!

Morris - 7. Pulled off a couple of good saves, not sure if he could have done better with the third goal.
Clohessy - 5. Got caught out far too often going too far forward, we got caught in a number of situations with only three at the back. Does put in a good cross, but nobody made the runs.
Coughlan - 6. Hard as nails, still wins every header. (Even if they dont go in the right direction.) Maybe we were looking for him to organise the defence, which had no organisation!
Prosser - 3. I'd rather not.
Barker - 6. In my opinion he is solid, and uncappable of slipping below a 6. Dont think he will be MOM every week, but rarely puts a foot wrong.
Soares - 5. I just don't rate him, looks like he's not even trying at times.
Grant - 6. Not good, not awful like the rest. Picked on a bit by the man he was with. He will be asking himself why he has stayed this season.
Easton - 5. Simply lacks leadership and presence.
Zaaboub - 4/5. Is he really fast, or does he just look kinda streamlined? Always looked like he was all-out sprinting but rarely reached the balls. Of the 11 on the pitch he'd be the first I'd past to but wasn't really involved.
Paterson - 6. You can't ask him to be impressive if you chuck him on the wing and ask him to win all the headers. Looks more inspired than last season.
Sturrock - 5. Not much class, although at one point in the first half he decided to hit the wing and show Soares how to cross. Did quite a few miles whilst he was on pitch.

Subs - 6. Good ideas, but we were not going to make an impact with the long ball game.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. I couldn't get a parking space in my usual places with all the stupid (half empty) permit holder only residential parking beyond the ground so got in late and missed the first goal.

Morris - 8 Thought he had a good game. Wasn't at fault for the goals I saw and distributed very well.
Clohessy - 6 Put in some good balls but got caught out of position several times. Willing lad though.
Prosser - 4 He was winning everything in the air when we came into the ground and was passing well out of defence. I'd just turned round to say that he looked good to my neighbour and the three major howlers happened. To be fair, everyone in defence looked horribly error prone.
Coughlin - 4 Was left badly exposed at the back for the second but contributed greatly to the calamity through his poor touch and then seeming to play the player onside.
Barker - 5 Was in SO MUCH SPACE for much of the second half but hardly used at all. However, when he did finally receive the ball, he played it to the side back to Coughlin, missing the obvious quick pass to Paterson.
Zaboub - 5 Put in some decent crosses but ended quite a few moves today and looks like he has been eating all the pies.
Grant - 5 Had a mare in the first half. Was getting forward better in the second but seemed to be channeling Macca, blasting the ball over the bar at every opportunity.
Easton - 6 The best outfield player IMHO. Looked very tidy in the first half but his influence waned in the second and he started misplacing passes. One aimless ball into the box when we were in a good position infuriated the crowd but I like the look of him on the whole.
Soares - 5 Frustrating. That is all.
Paterson - 3 Sorry, I just don't understand those of you who think he is so marvellous. His awareness of his team mates and of the possibilities that a move presents are frankly dreadful. He has no strength. He doesn't try hard enough. He did beat a man once in the first half. The one time that he showed any real desire was for a ridiculous challenge from the side at the edge of the pitch in a position of no danger that deservedly received a card. I know I'm going to be told that he is young and has potential but I'm afraid I don't see it, despite having seen him in a lot of games now, and I'm fed up with his limp wristed 'running' style. To be fair to him, all of the strikers are weak. We desperately need a loan signing.
Sturrock - 5 Thought he did OK in the first half. He put in one very good ball that almost led to a goal. However, his efforts on goal were very weak.
Corr - 4 Didn't really do anything of note.

Two things really, really worry me. Firstly, the ability of our players on the ball (apart from Easton) is not good enough at the moment. And that has nothing to do with playing in a team. Secondly, Port Vale (apart from the third goal which was excellent) struggled to string any passes together and were nothing special. Their defence was agricutural to say the least (particularly their no 6 who got away with murder). Their keeper looked dodgy but we put him under no pressure at all. And yet they murdered us - it should have been 5-1. Boy, was that a reality check.

Morris: 7 DAVE OF THE MATCH'S MAN OF THE MATCH
Made some fine reflex saves and without him the match could have been a mega upset. Needs to be much more commanding though, especially on corners he lacks dominance

Clohessy
: 5
Did well to come forward and attack, however at times he was way out of possession and the Port Vale forwards ripped him to shreds
Coughlan: 4
Time and time again Coughlan was demolished at the back.
Prosser: 2
Very poor game for the centre back.
Barker
: 5
Looks a strong left back and could be useful later on in the season, however he needs to pick up some form.
Soares: 2
Looked really weak and lost possession at crucial times. Failed to get a shot on target and generally looked out of place
Easton
: 4
The skipper looked lost in midfield and in the second half he could have tucked away a neat shot but instead chose to pass
Grant: 4
Looked as if he lacked confidence, but passed and controlled the ball well.
Zaaboub
: 3
Was rightly sent off in the second half, made one or two decent crosses but these weren't put to good use
Paterson: 3
Lacks dominance, doesn't look like our "20-a-season" striker that we all wish for
Sturrock
: 1
Other than being the manager's son, I don't know why he is playing. Looked utter garbage this afternoon

Subs:-

Phillips 5
Corr 6
Spencer 4

Officials: 1
Utter, utter trash. I could referee better if I was blindfolded

Supporters: 2
Quiet..so so quiet.

Prosser - 4 He was winning everything in the air when we came into the ground and was passing well out of defence. I'd just turned round to say that he looked good to my neighbour and the three major howlers happened. To be fair, everyone in defence looked horribly error prone.

After seeing KFC's heading last year, I didn't actually think it could get much worse, but Prosser proved that it can. Every header he got outmuscled and the ball just bounced aimlessly of his nugget. Woeful is an understatement

A dire performance, credit to Port Vale they look a good side but we were cut open far too easily at the back and once again didn't look threatening.

Morris- 7 considering Vale could have had 3 or 4 more, I think Morris was our best performer. You know something is wrong when you concede three and the keeper is your best performer. Couldn't really do much for the goals, made himself big for 2 one on ones and showed quick thinking with his distribution.
Clohessy- 5 was the best of the defence, good going forward but positioning was suspect
Barker- 3 there were times in the match when I thought Prosser was left back, didn't seem to be where he was supposed to be. I'd be sick if I were Johnny Herd.
Coughlan- 4 not a terrible game but certainly not the leader we are led to believe he is.
Prosser- 2 come back osei sankofa all is forgiven!
Soares- 3.5 the odd moment of skill but overall a very frustrating player, Widdrington certainly seemed to be singling him out for critisism
Zaboub- 5 movement was good, seemed to get into the right places but was rarely found.
Easton- 3.5 a bit annonymus, and that is never good for a CM or Skipper!
Grant- 5 frustrating for him, you could see that. Not a great performance but he was still getting about the field putting in challenges etc
Sturrock- 5 cant mark him too low as the supply to the front two was virtually non existant! did ok with the scraps he got, held it up, strong on the ball.
Pato- 5 He's never going to do anything if we play the way we did today, needs the ball to feet and down the channels.

Subs
Phillips- 5 defence looked better in the second half with him in it, couldn't have got much worse, we were lucky to only be 1-0 down at half time
Corr- 5 didn't do much, didn't have the opportunity.
Spencer- 5 looked a livewire when on, but again he didn't get enough of the ball.

Too early to make an educated opinion on this team but it is made up of a lot of players released from similar or lower stature teams than us, is expecting anything more than mid table respectability asking too much from this side?

As usual I see, people have let their feelings run away with them. Which is what ironically happened after the Bristol City game also. This is a brand new team in a new League. Surely people expected days like today early on? If not, you are very, very naive! After Bristol we were champions, after today we're in the Conference blah blah, this never would've happened under Tilly blah blah, Ron Martin is this and that blah blah, look at me I was proved right blah blah. Seriously, come on people. It was a shoddy performance yes, there were some baffling selections yes, but it's the THIRD league game of the season. The management and players WILL learn from today. Especially as in my opinion, Port Vale were League Two in a nutshell - not masses of ability, but big, strong lumps who get in your face and who are well organised and well drilled. Easton and Grant never got a kick because they weren't allowed any time. Paterson and Sturrock didn't get a kick because they were up against two great oafs. I'm sure PS has learnt even more today, which will be used in the near future. Games like this, are, ironically, needed.

Ratings:

Morris 7: Perhaps he was slightly impetuous with their second goal in going to ground, but he probably wasn't to know Easton was going to get a foot on it. His handling was solid all game though, but perhaps he needs to sort out the goal kicks, as they're a little too flat.

Clohessy 6: Caught horribly out of position for their first, he tried manfully throughout. He'll get better.

Coughlan 4.5: I have no idea why he was picked. At all. Unfortunately for him, his selection was where it started to go wrong. His legs are shot, and unless Mohsni plays alongside him, I'm not too keen on seeing him back in the line up.

Prosser 4.5: He started off alright, but then one mistake and he fell to pieces. He went from the guy we signed a few weeks ago, to the guy Port Vale fans said he was - a wreck. Hopefully his confidence won't be too shot, but I'd be surprised to see him in the team for the next few games.

Barker 6: He slowly struggled more and more as the game went on after a useful start.

Soares 6.5: I kind of catch the drift that he's going to be made a scape goat a lot of the time, but I thought he was our only attacking outlet today. Might just be me, but a young Kevin Betsy? He tends not to take people on, but he uses his pace to get in behind. Yes he was flaky on occasions, but he's a winger. Enough said. Given time he'll do just fine for us. Please don't hound him out eh boo boys?

Grant 6: He struggled today and I'll be honest, I don't think he looked like he wanted to be there. Whatever was said on Facebook (which kindly won't be relayed by the people who saw it for some reason) might add up with today. Does he have eyes on a move? Has he heard rumblings of a possibility?

Easton 5: Maher got away with not being able to run, for a few years as well, and I hope Easton will be able to as well, but I'm slightly worried by his start to the season.

Zaaboub 5: Poor. Still doesn't look fit and I really do hope Hall will be given a chance shortly. A couple of the crosses he put in proves he has the ability, but he needs more than one reserve game before he's a regular that's for sure.

Paterson 5.5: Had the odd burst, but it's not his game when he's having balls launched at his head, whilst lumps of centre halves kick him up in the air. Another who WILL come good.

Sturrock 5.5: Just like Pato, he struggled with the service given. On more than one occasion though he linked up play superbly well, with intelligence and quality.

Subs:

Phillips 5.5: I'm staggered that he was dropped, especially for Coughlan, but he seemed to be affected by what was going on around him once he was on because he looked shaky, sending clearance after clearance to the opposition, or to the stands.

Corr 6.5: This was a game crying out for Corr and he made a difference once he was on, because we finally were able to retain the ball up front. The fact that he wasn't playing kind of makes me worry that the homework wasn't done, as we needed his muscle against this opposition.

Spencer 6: He caused them a few troubles once he was on and the new stream lined hair do no doubt helped!!

A bad performance and we were taught a League 2 lesson by a well organised Vale outfit, but we did fall victim to some dreadful decisions and in the first half, the wind was playing havoc with the ball in the air, which is why Prosser struggled so badly. In all fairness, 3-1 flattered us.

Defensively, we were all over the place. Prosser's aerial prowess vanished against two very good strikers who stayed high up the pitch to keep pressure and offer an outlet for a long, searching ball. Barker was a shade off the pace, and Clohessy was dragged inside for their first, allowing Richards ample time and space to nod it in. The defence continuously knocked the ball forward which was in vain, losing possession and bringing even more pressure onto themselves.

Distribution, particularly from the back line, was dreadful and this was solely down to switching to a more typical 4-4-2, with no holding midfielder, and Simpson's absence. The absence of our holding player, with Grant's forrays forward, cost us dearly in leaving a gaping hole for Vale to operate in, Griffiths had all the time and space to run into before laying it off for a winger or a forward and nobody would track him for fear of losing one of the Richards up front. The second goal was purely a byproduct of us pushing for an equaliser, and the third was a classy move and finish, benefitting from that huge space we gave them in the middle of the parker.

If we're going to play 4-4-2, Grant and Easton must decide who is going to operate in the gap and take care of the defensive aspect, or we'll suffer for it.

The wingers looked useful throughout but fell victim to our shocking passing game, again the result of Simpson's absence. Zaaboub, though, will have to be more eager to get the ball in and improve his decision making as to which areas to hit and what cross to provide... In general, his delivery was very good, but there were times when a drilled ball across the box, with Paterson rushing into the box, was needed yet Zaaboub floated one in. Soares needs help positionally... Tracks inside far too much.

Sturrock was, yet again, impressive. Great touch, great link-up play and looked to bring the wingers and full-backs into the game more... Reading the twitter feeds, All At Sea suggested some ironic cheers when he was subbed off which disappoints me, as he was one of the two or three better players and people really need to get over this nepotism tag, it hasn't done Lee Johnson any harm.

Paterson was anonymous, although the service was terrible and, in frustration, he played deeper and deeper as the game went on which, with Sturrock playing a support-striker role, completely blunted our forward line. Given the physical element of Vale's side and the continual pushes in the back and holding, Corr should've been on at HT, when he did come on, he gave them a taste of their own medicine and they didn't appreciate it... This is what it's going to be like in this League with officials like the disgrace we had today. If they push you, you push them back, there's no point fannying around.

Morris - 7 - Made some good saves to keep us in it at 1-0, claimed well from corners.
Clohessy - 6 - Lost his man for their first, but he continues to impress me. Good on the ball with great delivery.
Prosser - 4.5 - Really struggled today against physical forwards and conditions.
Coughlan - 6 - Looked assured and covered well for Prosser's mistakes.
Barker - 4 - Not at the races today I'm afraid, looked unfit.
Zaaboub - 5 - Indifferent, intermittent, inconsistent, but good delivery
Soares - 5- As above.
Grant - 5 - Looked considerably uneasy with the formation and system.
Easton - 5 - As above.
Sturrock - 7 - Another good all-round display.
Paterson - 5 - Starved out of the game.

Subs

Phillips - 5 - Not much better than Prosser, hacked and missed at a few balls
Corr - 7 - Got his flick ons and worried the Vale defence. Should've started.
Spencer - 6 - Average.

Officials - 3 - Disgrace.

As usual, I agree with an awful lot that you say, ESB.

And I too also think that we missed Simpson big time today.

With regards to the officials, the farce after Barker was forearmed in the back of the head, was nothing short of shambolic. Quite how the idiot 'in charge' decided that Barker needed a booking was totally beyond me.

Well well well.. what a load of rubbish
Here are my stats for the Pringello Index

Morris (7) - Did nothing wrong, and made one or two good saves
Clohessy (6) - Not sure why he is getting caned today. He is growing in confidence
Coughlan (5) - Aside from getting hit by ball and being a brave little soldier looked very shaky at back
Prosser (4) - Hauled off at half time and rightfully so. completely reckless performance
Barker (5) - Is better than he played today. looked a bit old and slow today
Soares (5) - Ineffective every time I see him. Involved though
Grant (5) - Can do so much better. Booked yet again
Easton (5) - Boring one dimensional sideways rubbish
Zabouub (6) - Looked lively when on pitch. Getting fitter. Awful freekick !
Paterson (6) - I think he did ok today, but why put on wing?
Sturrock (5) - not his fault we played long ball to a small person

Corr (5) - missed sitter and never really involved
Spencer (5) - ran about well but no body strength
Phillips (6) - did ok second half

Ref (3) - It was all about him. Let us get bullied early on by never really spotting their over physical tactics

Sturrock (4) - Rubbish tactics today - hoof to Sturrock? He talks about players earning wages, well not sure he earnt his today

Paul Sturrock should donate his wages away as well as the rest. Why were the two classiest players Simpson and Mohsni left out? Secondly, Prossers replacement Phillips put in the biggest donkey performance i have ever seen at Roots Hall!
