Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1 Peterborough 0

Can't be doing with giving my views on all of them tonight, but a few tidbits from me.

Mildenhall - As per my above post, a very decent debut.

Harding - Looks a good signing. Very assured.

Bailey - 1st half his passing was all over the shop and was probably dreaming of the bright lights of Charlton, but 2nd half he picked up.

Scannell - He's been fantastic in pre season so why oh why did we not give him more service? He barely saw the ball. Unfortunate to be subbed IMHO.

Walker - Not a winger and barely saw the ball for the first half an hour. Looks to be improving though and his run in the 1st half was fantastic. Goal of the season if he'd have got that in.

Furlong - Didn't think he was too great today to be honest. Won very little in the air and when he did it went nowhere near Barnard. Huffed and puffed though and worked hard.

Betsy - Wore the wrong boots for a start, but showed some nice touches and buzzed around well. Would be nice to see him and Scannell start on Tuesday night.

Grant - Did very well in his short spell on the pitch and seemed to be amused by the shouts of Snoop from the Greens as he came on.

Revell - I know he wasn't on for long at all, but he won every header that came his way.

I think Scannell was tiring a bit.

FWIW, on that performance defensively it was a great improvement on last season. I thought as a defender Harding was better than Mulgrew, but not in terms of his set piece deliveries.

Early days for Mildenhall, he looks confident in his handling, and also in his communication with his defenders. It remains to be seen if he's as good a shot stopper as Flahavan.

OK I know Im very much in the minority on this message board with my thoughts and opinions, so I would like to give a very honest opinion of todays game after all the pre season in board fighting etc.....

Its a good post.

Scannall of course my opinion and youll scream at me for this but, have I missed something??? a truley avergage footballer
Anthoney Grant looked as affective/non affective as he did last season

There has been talk of Scannel as player of the year, and Grant a great signing, but we saw thes eblokes last season, I guess aobut 10 appearance each, I and I really cant remember a worthwhile contribution from either. Hopefully Till has seen something I missed and they will become good players.
The other worry for me is Walker. Who can remember his main contribution from last season.

I suppose the best thing you can say about today is 3 points.

Ok, my take from our new seats right on the half way line - right opposite Sir Alex Ferguson - ho ho ho, we beat both you and your son 1 nil!

Mildenhall - made things look relatively easy on a day when the ball was spinning all over the place, plucked things out of the air with confidence, bit of juggling but an assured first proper display - 7/10

Francis - comfortable and assured, this guy is going to be a key player for us this year - 7.5/10

Clarkey - got beat once or twice by Mackeil-Smith but on the whole had the measure and got that all important goal - 7/10

Captain Barrett - assured, typical Barrett performance - 7.5/10

Harding - was impressed, considering how little time they've had together there's the beginnings of something strong coming out already. Loved that cheeky corner kick! - 7/10

Scannell - guy had loads of running and loads of effort, lacks a little finesse but with a bit of maturity this season can be a match winner - 7.5/10

Moussa - still needs to develop a little confidence but looking more and more confident the more games he gets - 7/10

Bailey - failed to see the 9/10 performances some are saying, made several terrible slices, I think he tried to stand off in the first half and gave in and got stuck in in his usual manner in the second. Vital player until Macca's back in my opinion - 8/10

Walker - fantastic performance, looked comfortable and in control, even when he and Scanners swapped wings, subbed towards the end when flagging a little (and after a scything) MOM for me - 8.5/10

Barney - never stopped running, some lovely play just never looked like scoring today - 7.5/10

Furlong - the master showed some lovely stuff and nearly had a couple. amazingly kept going much longer than I expected, linked well - 8/10

Subs:

Betsy for Scannell - hate to say it but we looked much more dangerous once he came on, really encouraging - 7.5/10

Grant for Walker - bit overshadowed today but probably played a bit out of position - 7/10

Revell for Furlong - not long enough, would really like to see him and Barney up front together at some stage, good enough - 7/10

Ref and linos - linos crap as per usual, made some very poor judgement calls, ref not too bad, should have booked some of their players earlier

Peter Holmes - I thought he did a great job on the microphone, just needs to get that Brian Wheeler moment right when the attendance is announced and there's 10 minutes left so let's get behind the mighty Blues!!!

Good first game of the season, I enjoyed it though was frozen from standing for 2 hours plus by the West Stand entrance collecting signatures for the petition.

Not being funny but i think we need to start scoring more goals if we want to be serious playoff contenders for this season. 10th place in the league is ridiculous! Tilly out! ;)

OK I know Im very much in the minority on this message board

Somehow the idea of you being a minority anywhere just doesn't ring true.

Good post that. Obviously I wasnt there, so can't comment on individual performances myself, but it tells me more than the countless "he was brilliant/he was rubbish" posts. Along with the FBM report this could become compulsory post match reading!

Well today I thought we did ever so well to win the game, with out ever playing that well, and without needing to play that well, for me Peterbrough we well well short of what I was expecting and maybe they majorly underestimated us, because they were poor, they had absolutely nothing to frighten us

8500 about right, I thought Peterborough would bring more fans down 1800?

a good win southend and a great start

Not going to quote it all, these are what I consider the important points, Peterboro' are one of the teams tipped to do well, yet after the opening 15 minutes or so we calmly exerted our authority and stifled them. That shows maturity, and from a team where they didn't know each other from Adam the other day is quite remarkable. Bodes well for what's ahead. Would like to hold on to Bailey until Macca's fit, if he's determined to go then I hope we can reach some kind of agreement along these lines. we can't afford to be without either of them, Moussa is simply not ready to boss the midfield - that's not a slight, he's just not experienced enough yet. Crowd looked a little low to me from our perspective, mind you the weather was crap!

I thought Bailey was good today but not as good as other people seem to think, gave the ball away to cheaply too often for my liking.
Mildenhall looked good apart from a couple of spilt crosses in the second half, probably due to the weather though.
Harding looked like a very good player considering he's new to the squad, doesn't offer as much going forward as Hammel or Mulgrew but very strong defensively.
Francis is a class act, two brilliant crosses from deep positions today.
Walker just seemed to run until he lost the ball or got fouled, RM not his position.
Scannel seem very average today, never got past his man and gave the ball away cheaply.
Furlong was ok, can see him doing a good job for us, good effort in the second half too.
Barnard as per usaul never gave up on a single ball an was always a handful for the defense.
Ref was ****e and wasn't helped by his equally ****e linos

Was Sankofa on the bench today?

very happy with the win today. i didn't expect all 3 points today but thankfully i was proved wrong. was great having footy on saturday back again. forgot how much i missed it. was also surprised by the atmosphere. personally thought it was pretty good. credit goes to the west who i thought were very vocal and seemed a lot louder than usual. also nice the see the whole stand singing. even the south where i sit made a few mutters. very good game overall and very happy clarkey got the goal. love the passion he shows. future captain anyone?

My thoughts about today are mainly that we got three points, and given the remarkable lack of chances created by both teams, I'll take that any day.

I think it was fairly typical of any team which enters a new season surrounded by a lot of hype - they simply didn't live up to it. They did well last team, but the majority of their squad is made up of players picked out of League 2 or the Conference - it is a big jump to then expect to perform at the same level at League One, as Charlie MacDonald et al are living proof.

As for us, well I have to say overall we were not great, but we sneaked it, and you can't ask for more than that. The one concern for me would be the lack of balance and creativity in midfield. James Walker actually played well today, but he is not a winger and it is imperative that Betsy gets 'match fit' as soon as possible and becomes a permanent fixture in the side. I just worry where the goals are going to come from.

Last season, despite Macca and Bailey weighing in with 20 goals, they had no genuine ability to open up defences with the killer pass - Gower was relied upon for that, but withouth him in the side, we did look pretty short in that department.

Having said that, there were positives to take from the game. I thought the back four looked extremely comfortable, and for some reason, I already think they are more solid than last season - maybe having a tall keeper behind them is a factor? In addition, I think someone with the ability of Dan Harding at left back helps inspire confidence too.

Up top, both Furlong and Barney were quite quiet today, but worked hard none the less. I have a sneaky feeling that Revell may have an impact on us this season, and with Walker looking extremely sharp today, we have options.

The football wasn't as fluid as last season, but then it's the first game of the season, and the fact we won and did not suffer the post play off defeat hangover is hugely important.

Next week will be a sterner test for us, and what we're about - as much as Peterbrough are being hyped up as the team to watch this season, I suspect that we will have to beat much better opposition than them if we're serious about being contenders ourselves.

I thought we didn't play well but got the win. Alot of our games towards the end of last season were like this.

The First half was dire IMHO.

In the second half i was sorry to see Scannell subbed off, he was causing the posh quite a few problems, and his work rate was really good.
I thought Walker should have gone first instead of Scannell. Betsy must start ahead of Walker in the next game.

All in all, nothing to shout about, but the right result and a good start to the season.

MOM for me was Peter Clarke.

Think the idea of the smaller sized programme is good, and the contents of it didn't dissapoint either.

UP THE BLUES!

Dont see what the big deal abotu Scannel is, got no crosses in, never beat his man and lost the ball far to easily.

About half of our squad had a go at corners/freekicks today, surely this can be sorted out in training, BEAT THE FIRST MAN!

Bloody hell, thats fairly positive!

*faints*

Mildenhall played very well, dealt with the high balls very well and got down low quickly early in the second half to block a shot.

Harding looked shaky to start with but grew in stature, especially when Besty swapped wings when Grant came on..good overlapping

Barratt and Clarke 1st class.

Francis tended to leave the wideman to roam, thought he could have got a lot tighter on his man. Upped his game 2nd half and looked much better.

Scannell has tricks in his locker but is knocked off the ball easily and tired midway thru the second half...good time to be subbed.

Bailey looked out of sorts for the 1st 45 mins, but came good 2nd half.

Moussa, poor young Moussa looked out of his depth many times today, but will improve with age.

Walker did well, held the ball up , had some mazy runs

Furlong..sorry, didn't seem to be in the game most of the 90 mins..last 15 mins were his best of the game

Barnard looked a poor mans Freddy today, it just didn't seem to work. A couple of neat touches were about it for me.

Betsy...looks like a wise purchase, livened things up, does the simple thing, can be a good attribute

Grant and Revell..not really enough time to judge.

Overall, I think we were lucky to come away with the points, we looked very very average. A lot of simple obvious passes didn't happen. For instance, early in the second half, Bailey run wide with the ball, puling the player out of position, creating a good gap for a pass into the gaping channel, but no player saw it...

If we can play this mediocre and come away with a win, then I can't wait till it all gells and we get the full GTi version of todays popular plus performance!!

The fbm report - Peterborough

POSH SENT PACKING
Southend opened their 2008/9 account with a home win against much fancied Peterborough in front of a crowd of 8665, the third highest in the division, behind only Leicester and Huddersfield.
Having just got promoted with very deep pockets financially, Posh are one of the teams to watch in this division. Certainly any scout watching us pre-season would have seen nothing to fear and would have probably thought Aaron Mclean would have a field day. To be fair, for the majority of the first half Southend could hardly get near the visitors, who kept the ball much better. Scannells pre season promise had deserted him as he hardly got a sniff, Baileys early distribution was woeful and there was little to no cohesion between the strikers and the midfield... that is when the players could actually stand up in very unseasonal and wet conditions.
But for all their possession, ‘Boro created little of note with only a glaring miss by Mackail-Smith being their only chance. However, what a chance it was, with Whelpdale getting to the bye line and firing a low ball across goal that eluded everyone including Mackail-Smith who failed to make contact from just a couple of feet out.
The last 5 minutes of the half saw Blues finally apply some pressure and create a bit of panic in the visiting defence, but that was about it for a cagey and uneventful first half.
Southend grew in stature in the second period and the understanding between the players grew. The new look defence looked much more solid. With a new giant keeper, the temptation for opposing teams to sling set pieces and crosses in under the bar just wasn’t there and we didn’t look in any danger defending set pieces at all. Want away star Bailey ran the show and Moussa was also contributing nicely. Furlong showed that he can still cut it at this level and new left back”Psycho” Harding (am I the only one who saw the resemblance to Stuart Pearce) fitted in as though he’d played with us for his whole life. It was a vastly improved second half which the visitors rarely got a sniff in. Thursdays other new addition, Betsy, came on with 18 minutes left and almost immediately was instrumental in winning a corner. Harding sent it over, the ball bounced about and a lunging Clarke prodded the ball home.
After that, chances were at a premium but Blues just didn’t look in any danger at all, with Francis and Grant keeping possession in the corner for nearly all the 3 minutes added time. Not pretty, but effective and sometimes necessary.

RATINGS –

Mildenhall – 7 – Did very little wrong, big presence, one good second half save from Mclean.

Francis – 7 – Indifferent first half, much better second.
Clarke – 8 – Notched his first goal at the Hall and was clearly delighted. I hope he signs on and stays.
Barrett – 8 – Not much got past him and captained the side well.
Harding – 8.5 – MOM – Settled in really well and gets the award simply because he played well in both halves.

Scannell – 6 – Disappointing after a brilliant pre season. Rarely got the ball but did little with it when he did.
Moussa – 7 – Will suffice at the moment and did enough to show glimpses of his class.
Bailey – 8 – Superb second half Could he be persuaded to stay? Who knows nut I doubt it.
Walker – 6 – His first touch is fine but it’s the 2nd onwards that lets him down. I’m sorry, he is just not a wide player.

Barnard – 7 – Got stuck in second half and was generally good...Not a sniff though
Furlong – 7.5 – Impressive first debut – didn’t really have many chances but hit a terrific shot that was well saved by Lewis.

SUBS
Betsy – on for Scannell – 7 – Did ok... looks as though he could be an athlete but at times didn’t look like a footballer.
Revell – on for Furlong – 6 – Didn’t really touch it much to be fair.
Grant – on for Walker – 6.5 – more involved that Revell.

Ref – M Whitestone – 7 – Seen better but have also seen a lot worse.

Cant argue with much of that post. Scannell looked good against preseason opposition, but might just be first day nerves. Worth sticking with, and trying Betsy on other flank?

Not sure how you can rate Grant on a few minutes football though>!

As for Peterborough - they ARE a very good side, and we dealt with their front men very well - more credit to our defence than on them.

The whole of our back 5 deserve full credit for a magnificient defensive performance against pacey opponents.

Clean sheet 1 of the campaign to make it fortress Roots Hall.

Solid start. Can improve on service to front men by getting crosses in early on occasions to mix it up. Furlong in particular thrives on attacking crosses.

The cutting inside from wide and playing ball to feet with backs to goal and trying to get in behind their defence was perhaps a little too predictable at times but good first effort and sure to improve offensively as they play together more.
