Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1 Peterborough 0

I think anyone criticising Harding would do well to bear in mind he had 2 incidents which may well have caused him more than a slight headache, I thought he did really well considering how little time he's had to fit in.

Don't know how he got straight up from getting smashed in the face. :stunned:

Trouble is, isn't everyone going to remember the last time Scannell was used as an impact sub at Millwall, including the player himself?

I agree, 1 game 1 assist ain't bad for a left-back making his debut 2 days after signing.

why are so many people saying that furlong didnt win many headers? i thought he won loads, making me feel impressed by his strength and ability to knock balls on, one of his headers being very dangerous as it looped over the defence, i thought he did well and i believe he could form a good partnership with barnard.

Mildenhall - 6 - I thought mildenhall had good presence in the box but cant catch!
Franny - 6 - Played like he did when he was dropped early last season (frustrating as I think he is a great player when playing well)
Barrett - 8 - Usuall committed WYSIWYG display.
Clarke - 8 - Usuall committed WYSIWYG display.
Harding 6 - On this showing, not in mulgrews league with regard to dead ball delivery,s or heading
Scannell - 8 - Surprised that he was taken off imo
Bailey - 9 - Put in a great display. Wayward passes in the first half but looked 100% committed and made some excellent hard challenges.
Moose - 6 - Reminded me a bit of Maher but too lightweight.
Walker - 6 - Hardley saw the ball 1st half & didnt get a touch for 1st 15 mins
Barnard - 8 - Became more influencial as the game went on. Never afraid to get in where it hurts.
Furlong - 4 - 1 for turning up, 1 for appearance, 1 for running around a bit, 1 for going off

Betsy - 5 - Looked pacy and determined.
Revell - 6 - Not long enough to prove / do anything
Grant - 6- Not long enough to prove anything

Tilson's after match interverview (yawnnnn) 4 - 1 for turning up, 3 (the amount of times he said like I say)

I wasn't at the game but just watched the highlights.

The first thing that struck me was the total absence of chances at either end. Beyond the goal there was a half chance for Furlong, which he hit well, and half for MacLean.

We started the last season in the same vein as we finished the previous one: conceding goals from all angles. It took six months to arrest that habit.

I hope that we can continue to build on that and keep control of the game, even if it means being less adventurous. We won consecutive promotions on the back of a core strength in the side that could control the game and keep the opposition out. A couple of key players then did the business at the other end. Clearly, we don't have those couple of players anymore but we have individuals who can hurt the opposition. We have to give them a chance to win the game though by requiring them to only convert one opportunity.

We also look a much bigger and stronger side. Adding Furlong, Betsy, Scannell and Mildenhall certainly helps though.

On Mildenhall, his handling won't be as good as Flahavan's, but then no goalkeeper can match that standard at this level. He is in the side to do a different job though. We have for many years conceded the majority of goals from set-plays and crosses from the flanks. Flahavan's handling in those situations is unknown because he never put himself in the position to test it.

Mildenhall will parry a shot that gets converted that Flahavan would have held; that will certainly happen at some point this season. How many crosses will he have taken (even juggling a bit) that Flahavan would have allowed to be headed in to the net though?

I know it won't happen, but can we please remember that when it arises?

Mindenhall - 7 Looked comfable apart from one occasion .

Francis - 7 Looked ok but some parts of the game lost the ball a bit .

Clarke - 7 Same old self. Looked tidy and capped with a goal

Barret - 9 Captain fantastic . Looked good with ball MOM for me

Hardling- 6 Looks a good capture for us

Scannel - 6 Looks good but lacked final product.

Bailey - 8 Nice passes and looked better in last 40 mins or so.
Miss if he leaves

Walker -6 Didnt get much of the ball but looked ok when he did

Moussa- 7 Not a bad performace

Barnad -9 Work rate was v good.

Furlong - 6 looked ok nothing outstanding but will be a good partner for Banard.

Besty - 7 Looked a good signing from the time he had on the pitch

Grant - 5 Not much time to do anything but held ball well

Revell - 5 Not much time to do anything.

This was only my 3rd game so im not the best with faces and numbers yet.

But because i live kent and being only 16 does restrict what i can go to .

Mildenhall - 6.. didnt have a lot to do but good save from McClean but dodgy punch in 1st half and still aint 100% confident about his catching but all in all fine

Francis - 6... gave Boyd far far far too much space in the first half, but seemed much better second!

Clarke - 8... a typical clarke performance, kept McClean quiet with Barrett.. looked very solid!

Barrett - 8... same as clarke... excellent display!

Harding - 7... i like him on first impressions.. considering he probably just learnt his fellow team mates names in the changing room... not as attacking minded as mulgrew or hammell, was a bit more reserved.. but thats not a bad thing!

Scannell - 7 started very brightly and faded.. wasnt afraid to get involved though and take on his man

Moussa - 6.. plays too much like maher with sideways passing instead of trying to be a bit more creative.. but only criticism.. was consistent. however wouldve played grant myself as he has much more of a presence about him and really likes to get in

Bailey - 9... brillaint display esp 2nd half.. granted a few wayward passes but conditions werent the greatest... if thats his last sufc match then he ended on a high.. could really do with keeping him!

Walker - 7.. saw no ball in 1st half but in 2nd half played really well... roasted their right back a good few times.. cut in quite a lot.. too many touches at times but then there wasnt much about to support him

Furlong - 7 .. put himself about, one a few headers (not enough), held the ball up.. but real reason for optimism was his shot in second half... he took it so early and was powerful and on target.. what you expect of natural finisher... hopefully he can do a job and create goalsout of only half chances

Barnard 9 - superb! ran all day long.. no chances on goal from what i recall.. but he defended from the front and i love that sort of workrate!

Overall- didnt play great but battled hard which is something we dont always do... seemed to grow with confidence after a dodgy looking opening 10 mins.. and a game like that in the past we wouldve lost.. so great character and teams that win the league win games like that.. get a point at millwall and will be very happy with the start of the season!

Scannall of course my opinion and youll scream at me for this but, have I missed something??? a truley avergage footballer, plenty of skill but saw nothing else at all, again if we are to score any goals or player any sort of attractive football then we are gonna need a wide man who can cross the ball.

I think you need to bear in mind the conditions yesterday that were not ideal for wingers looking to take people on and deliver from wide areas. There was a few times when Scannell's pace would have taken him into great positions but the ball kept getting caught under his feet as it slowed up due to the surface. He has also shown during pre-season that unlike many wingers we've had recently he DOES have an end product and a good one at that.

Mildenhall 7.5 - commanding, no problems
Francis 6.5 - unease start settled later
Barrett 7.5 - reliable
Clarke 7.5 MOM - same as above, Man of match due to scoring.
Harding 7 - liked him, although freekicks weren't greatest nor were corners
Scannell 5.5 - no pace too bulky, don't think he's gonna cut it.
Moussa 6.5 - gives the ball away too much
Bailey 7 - much the same as last year although i thought he looked uninterested for first 30mins
Walker 7.5 - decent touches played well outta position
Furlong 7 - lump, did ok don't think gonna have as much impact as goat. need another forward
Barnard 6.5 - don't remember him doing much other than running around.

Subs
Betsy 6.5 - did ok, defo think he'll replace Scannell soon.
Grant 6 - whilst everyone else looks to have bulked out, he looks like he's lost weight. Did nothing wrong.
Revell 6 - did he touch the ball?

Tilly 7.5 - team selection good, subs same time as always

Crowd 7 - bit subdued for 60mins but that went with performance. peterboro must of bought near 2,000.

Weather 3 - ****ing it down in august

Ref 8 - Decent performance

Peterboro 6 - good first 20 mins then faded. Pretty disappointing other than there left winger. Mclean no threat

Good first post - welcome to the board! :)

Whoever the pr*t was that started the Flavhavan shout in the West Stand in the 2nd half, can I request that if he wants to chant his name that much, he should go and watch Palace and not bring his chant to the Hall !!!

It always makes me laugh when the same obnoxious little scrotes always show up intent on bullying whoever the fashionable target may be, from under the cloak of anonymity afforded by a crowd. Even more so when you imagine how they'd react if Mildenhall recognised them in the street and gave them the opportunity to reiterate their thoughts.

Shouldnt think Middenhall would notice most of them, unless he accidentally stood on one..
