Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1 Peterborough 0

Cant argue with much of that post. Scannell looked good against preseason opposition, but might just be first day nerves. Worth sticking with, and trying Betsy on other flank?

Not sure how you can rate Grant on a few minutes football though>!

As for Peterborough - they ARE a very good side, and we dealt with their front men very well - more credit to our defence than on them.

i also thought Scannell didnt play his best and worth giving Betsy a go. I thought Peterborough would of been better than what they played today apart from when they attacked.

I thought Peterborough looked very average, Barrett and Clarke had McLean sussed.

A decent performance, especially in defence. Thought Mildy was excellent and harding had a very assured debut. Bailey was the pick of the midfield and Barney did a sterling job up front.

Did slightly worry me we created so few chances at home. I thought both wide players were very poor and I dont think Furlong can be criticised becasue to get the best out of him we need to get good balls into the box, something we didnt do today. Hopefully Betsy can provide this and I do think Scannel has something about him but needs to improve his work rate and his positional play.

Cant argue with a 1-0 though, especially against a Peterborough team I think will be top 10.

Good grief, what's wrong with all of you? We've won our first (home) league game of the season. Don't you get it?

We're doomed! Relegation is inevitable!

Teams like Peterbrough annoy me. They have a wealthy chairman, performed very well last year, Ferguson is a bright young manager and have some good players so their fans think that promotion is done and dusted!! Sheer arrogance!
McLean and Mackail-Smith won't have come up against the likes of Barrett and Clarke in league 2 and as a result they didn't really get a kick. Both of our centre backs were too physical for them and it looked like men against boys. Thought Barrett and Clarke were very good today.

To be fair, the comments on the Posh forum were anything but "BillyBigWotsits", they accepted defeat graciously and rated us as one of the better teams in League One.

Was really happy with the team today! :)

No 'out of tens' from me but..

Mildenhall - very good, come out alot (good, but could be bad if too much, just the one miss punch from what I remember)

Francis - nothing special but is going to have a good season at right back I think

Barret/Clarke - will be extrememly happy if these two play every game in the centre this year, no complaints from me

Harding - Only just got here so did well, might not be as good as mulgrew with the set peices but a great player to get in! (well done sufc)

Scannel - was exciting to watch, something different. Looked to take people on and a threat running at defenders

Walker - Real good go today.. Not his real position, but looked confident and did well. Took on someone down the left and got to the byline once or maybe twice.

Bailey - Just on todays performance and nothing else, great. Few misplaced passes but worked hard.

Moose - fit in nicely. Won the ball easily at times, worked very hard. If he had a better output I'd say he's a great replacement for maher. Well done.

Barnard - Looking good. Feels like he will put away the majority of chances if he gets them.

Furlong - No complaints. Didn't do anything inspiring, but not too much wrong. Good experience.

Subs:

Betsy - Looked lively and positive. Would like to see him for longer to see if we get more width.

Revell - Won stuff in the air! :)

Grant - Wouldn't have looked out of place

Really enjoyed being back at the hall today, South Upper was a great place to be.

Well done Tilly & Co.

My ratings:

Mildenhall: Wouldn't be out of place in the England cricket team. Couldn't catch a cold at times. Saying that, he really did command his box and a welcome sight to see a bigger goalkeeper and he did make a really smart save. (7)

Francis: Shaky first half but read the game very well second half, think he'll have a good season. And awesome at seeing out the game in the corner, looked like Ronaldo, just without the tan and ego! (7)

Clarke: Given MOTM, and looked solid. Wish he'd sign a new contract. Still poor distribution at times, but found the net well. (8)

Barrett: My MOTM. Solid performance and was all over everyone and everything in the entire stadium! I swear he winked at me at the end when he was clapping everyone. Awesome. (9)

Harding: Not a bad debut, but won less headers than Harrold (and he didnt play). Took up Mulgrew's set piece duties but couldnt clear the first man. Maybe thought they had the same heading ability as him! (7)

Walker: I dunno about Walker on the wing. Not too bad but looked best when he cut inside. Reminded me of Mitchell Coles lack of crosses. (7)

Bailey: Mixed reception but my second MOTM. Gave away more than usual but was more committed as the match went on. Nearly killed their winger at one stage. Please stay! (8.5)

Moussa: Poor start, but became more relaxed as the game went on. Could be very useful this season. MOOOOOOOOOOOOSE! (7)

Scannel: Looked a bit sluggish at times but will settle down and tear apart League One (i hope). Did tire towards the end but nice to see him attacking defenders. (7.5)

Barnard: The GOOD LORD worked his socks off. You could say they're HOLY now. Sorry...poor joke. Look forward to a lot of goals this season. (8)

Furlong: Didn't have the best games imo. Was a bit off the pace and didnt win a great deal in the air. Prefered Revell up front. (6)

Betsy: Looked very good when he came on. (7)
Grant: Showed his ex-chelseaness with a great bit of acting injury. I thought he was crying. OSCAR! (10 for acting, 6 for football)
Revell: Won his fair share of headers. prefer to see him start. (7)

I'm of the opinion that Clarke and Barrett really had stormers today , as Mclean and Macail smith are handfulls , the pace at which they broke forward today was frightening but our two warriors stood firm and nullified them .

Thought Boyd looked quite dangerous too , but that was it from them as every other player looked very average.

From our POV here are my ratings :

Midds - 7 claimed some good crosses to relieve pressure, although one scary moment.

Francis 7 - solid , good going forward.

clarke -8.5 - class

Barrett - 8 - just out shined by the awesome clarke.

Harding- 6.5 comfortable on the ball and good positioning , lost too many headers if being picky.

Scannell - 6 - got out worked and out played first half by Boyd and didn't really get going today.

Moussa - 6.5 - ok , goes missing too much in periods of the game and doesn't stamp his authority on the game , but is lively on the ball.

Bailey 7.5 - usual busy self.

Walker 6.5 - got the pace to beat players and done well at times .

Barnard - 7 busy and as stated looked our only real threat.

Furlong - 6.5 caused some problems with his presence and will score goals IMO.

Betsy - 6.5 - some good touches

Grant - 6.5 as above

Revell - put himself about but didn't have long enough to comment.

Overall a professional performance and looked a lot , lot better at the back which is very promising , not too much going forward which is a slight shame but we will come up agaisnt a lot worse teams that Posh.

Think the talk of Mildenhall being great is a bit much.

Awful punch from a corner and a few second attempt catches, although conditions were poor. Had an ok game but will need to do more than what he did today to convince me we have improved the position.

The second attempt catches were just a way of dealing with the conditions and he was always in control of them. At least he actually got them in the end, Flavs wouldnt have got to them in the first place

A few random thoughts:

I like the look of Mildenhall. He had one slightly dodgy flap at a high ball early on, and he's no Flavs with his feet, but he was otherwise solid and commanding. I can see him being a success for us.

A really promising debut for Harding. I thought his set pieces were decent too, which is a bonus as I wasn't aware that he had them in his arsenal.

Francis still looks worryingly lacksadaisical at times. It's one thing to look suave and unphased if you're Paolo Maldini, it's another to try it while your opponent takes a casual jog past you.

Centre-backs did well against McClean in tricky conditions.

Bailey was surprisingly professional, and had a good game.

Moose took a while to get into it, but has obvious class. Needs to be encouraged to try things when he feels they're on - he's the man who I feel can go some way towards replacing Gower's creative output.

Both wide players did decent jobs without anything really coming off for them. I expected a bit more from Scannell given his build up but I suppose that wet and windy conditions aren't ideal for dribblers.

We struggled to create much up front. I've said it before and I'll say it again - I just don't think that we're suited to the 'big man up top'. We've had a whole succession of players flop in that role and I can't honestly say I was inspired by Furlong today either. That's not a knock against him, I just think we'd be better off with somebody like Walker playing behind Barnard and bridging the sometimes gaping gap between midfield and attack.

All in all I'm just glad we won one of the trickier games we'll have this season. Hopefully today will stop some of the nonsense about us being relegation candidates, but I should probably know better than to expect that.

He got down really well for a big lad in the 2nd half , but yes one scary moment , but so did the opposing GK who is in the England set up , so no critisim from me .

Overall the team looked good. First half wasn't too good but thats SUFC for you. Strong defence, played well as a whole however front two of Barnard and Furlong didnt do too much. A goal was never going to come from one of them. Subs looked very good, Grant closed out the game and worked extremely well with Francis. Like the look of Betsy however he only played a little bit so my opinion isnt to strong yet!

Dan Harding is a fresh player who has only been around a couple of days so needs another game to get right up to scratch imo although he did have a decent game and did nothing wrong!

Peter Clarke was well deserved man of the match, was solid all game and helped us off to winning ways :D

UTB!

Ricey's View.

Its been a long time coming but finally the first game of the football league season had begun. Battered Sauage and chips, a look round the club shop, pick up my programmes and then off into the ground to soak up the atmosphere.

The New Match Announcer
For starters he is not spouting rubbish about West Ham ;) (although the Premiership Season hasn't started yet), he was very good I liked his up beat voice and over enthusiasm for everything. He gets my seal of approval as our new match announcer.

Pre Match Entertainment
Britain's got talent?? More like Britan has got no talent!! I hope they didn't pay for them cause they were awful.

The Pitch
Amazing how much of a great job the groundmen do on that pitch because it looked absolutely amazing. Looked really good by the goal as well which is not always its best place.

The Programme
Very small writing, looked very smart on the front cover but the rain had a slight affect on the cover and made it bobble, seems like cheaper paper. Some good interesting reading material in there.

Bluebelles
Fair play to them for coming out in the ****ing rain and looking rather nice in their outfits and showing those useless talentless dancers how its done. Sorry Gary but that red haired one is awful she acts as if the whole show is about her.

The Match
First half looked a bit of a shakey start, but after we got into second gear and the players started to gel I thought we looked like a very good team and I think if we play like that all season we will do very well. Not a bad word to say about any of the players today.

Player Ratings

Mildenhall - 8 - Second time I have seen him play and again another solid performence didn't put a foot wrong he is very commanding and coped well early on after a **** up with the defence. Very vocal again and good on set pieces.

Francis - 7 - Typical solid performence from Francis made some very good and important clearances throughout the game and was very good going forward.

Barrett - 8 - CAPTAIN FANTASTIC, can't fault this guys passion for the club after the game he bleeds blue blood! Very solid performence and made some important challenges.

Clarke - 8 - Same as Barrett really a tipped off a great performence with a well headed goal. Sign on that dotted line!!

Harding - 7 - I like him think he is a very good player, didn't win many headers at first but got his act together and did very well. Good signing Tilly lets hope he keeps it up.

Scannell - 8 - This guy impresses me everytime I see him, was all over the place fast, tricky and could of capped off a great appearance with a goal. Suprised Tilly took him off.

Bailey - 9 - *MOM* Lot of speculation over what has happened over the past 2 days, but certainly capped off possibly one of his last ever performences with a great game. All over the place great balls, great tackling, great skill, great player and if he does decide to go he will certainly be hard to replace.

Moussa - 7 - Composed and very solid performence he is certainly getting better season by season and think he will definatly be a great asset to us in years to come as he develops.

Walker - 7 - I am not a great fan of this guy but he proved me very wrong today he was very pacy, won loads of free kicks and was just a pain in the arse to Peterborough. And his skills on the ball were brilliant some really cleaver flicks, lets hope he keeps getting better.

Furlong - 7 - Holds the ball up very well and looks like he will chip in with a couple of goals as the season carrys on, suprised me at how fit he is for his ages. Good performence.

Barnard - 8 - This bloke really is something special, gives 110% and it actually pays off unlike with some of the other players who do this. Made some excellent runs, puts pressure on the defenders and gets into some great space. He will if fit score 20 if not more goals this season.

Subs:

Betsy - 7 - Pacey, excellent crosser of the ball I think Tilly has made a cracking signing with him. For the brief period he was on I was very impressed.

Grant - 6 - Looks good but obviously didn't have enough time to make a major impact.

Revell - 6 - Same as Grant but even less time to impress.

Tilson & Brush - Well selected squad but still puzzles me why he took off Scannell who was the 2nd best player on the pitch.

Peterborough

I don't see what the hype is about them, they didn't look all that special Mclean didn't do anything, Boyd was just pure dirty. Just seems like they have been hyped up and need bringing down to earth.

Officials

Rubbish plain and simple, the linesman on the west stand side was shocking, the referee made some stupid and strange decisions not the best officials we have had at the hall.

Atmosphere

We only sing when were winning! Our fans were drowned out by the Peterborough fans from what I heard from the South Upper. But other than that they were very good. Only a few people boo'ed Bailey when his name was read out.

i agree with most on here i thought mildy had an easy / average 1st game really never troubled but did like a tad clumsy dropped a couple. harding looked better than the usual leftys we have had of late but that poxy delivery of his he aint no mulgrew. betsy did look sharp when he came on an i thought that garnt was superb when he joined the game got stuck in just what we need now macca is out an bailey is on cloud transfer sulk ! apart from that all the usual suspects were just average but a win is a win southend 2 fergies 0 :support:
