Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-3 Southampton

Cricko i didn't think of the guiness thing, to think that a true blooded irishman spilt guiness, he should be shot at dawn, if not before.

now a really serious matter. Why are we not allowed onions on our burgers any longer at the Hall? I was told by a girl who serves the food that it was for health and safety reasons, i insult this girl on a weekly basis, but last night she shocked me into silence, she says that they are no longer allowed to serve onions as it is against health and safety regulations, oh and i will be really annoyed if someone says it has something to do with Macca and OBL.

Haha - I don't think even in the deepest, darkest of my imaginations that onions have ever entered into anything in that respect!

It's health and safety - too hot, too spitty.

With Sankofa at right back and no sawyer can anyone see us scoring many goals from open play---- because I can't see it.

Looking at the back 4 on friday I was honestly thinking get back Revell put him center back and francis on the right. Crap idea- yep , but worse than what we saw ???

Everyone berating the ref- we Southamton made their own luck. If you have enough shots something will/should happen . It was a crap surface , a gaol keepers nightmare and still we have f all shots.

on a positive note, in the second half one move near the end consisted of 16 passes whcih is impressive as earlier we could not string three together

TBV . I was in V and so am as much to blame as anyone else, but yes the singing second half was good, but it was 15 mins too late. We need Smithy's drum going 60 seconds afer the opposition scores, I honestly think it makes a difference, and although brilliant, there is still room for improvement. (this is trying to be constructive- not having a pop}.

Yes, but someone with "vision" would have known that Sankofa was NOT the player to pass to under those circumstances! :thump:
I'm sorry but that is one of the most laughable comments I've ever read on here. Whatever your opinion of Sankofa, he made a great run and Sawyer picked him out brilliantly. Had Macca played the pass, you'd have been purring. That's not a dig at Macca by the way as he was one of our better players.

Not sure if I am just super negative but I cant belive some of the ratings here.

Milldy - 7 Made a great double save early on but still let in 3
Sankofa - 3 Woeful - Worst player in ten years
Francis -5 Was poor at times but out of position and I felt did ok
Barrett - 4 Missed his header for 2nd, not good enough
Friend - 5 No berter than Herd, Great goal but he simply cant defend
Laurent - 5 Tried hard but did nothing
Grant - 7 Some vital interceptions and work so hard
Macca - 6 Played well at times
Moussa - 7 Creates so much for himself and worked hard
Barney - 6 Again worked hard and won a few headers
Freedman - 5 Forgot he was playing at times.

Pretty woeful overall....I am going to bed.
I fail to see why you scored Francis two higher than Sankofa. He was culpable for both the second and third goals and nearly gifted the Saints another after slipping during a backpass, which just about carried to Mildy.

Francis has generally been decent defensively so far this season - compared to last at least - but he had an absolute shocker on Friday. Sankofa wasn't exactly great but he was solid enough and 3/10 is extremely harsh.

Spildy should have cut out the ball from the cross in the first place, if Flavs had stayed as rooted as him there would be a he's too short outcry!
I suggest you watch the first goal again and then explain how exactly Mildy could have cut out the cross.

Overall the game made depressing viewing. I thought we played reasonably well in the first half and should have really gone into half time level. However, you can't expect to compete against the likes of Southampton if you gift them goals the way we did. Quite what Francis was doing for the second I'll never know and the third was even more diabolical. Barrett was beaten in the air far too convincingly and Francis failed to react, letting Lallana in goalside. It was a great finish, admittedly, but to concede like that from an opposition goal kick is unforgivable at this level.

The second half was always going to be a non-event unless we reduced the deficit within the first 10 minutes and so it proved. Lee Sawyer simply has to start the next game as we desperately need a creative spark to unlock packed defences. How we accommodate him I'm not sure - perhaps as the deep-lying forward - but we can't waste a talent like his.

No Excuses! We just arent good enough to be competing with the top teams....yet! We have a young squad and I think we can only get stronger from now on!

Sawyer for Dougie - 7, was on for about 5 mins before a touch, and then it was a header. Blinding run with the ball, trouble was it was across the pitch - Lee, if you're going to even attempt to be Southend's saviour, please learn to go forward

Sorry I can't agree, one of the major reasons Sawyer should be in the side is that he does go forward with the ball.

Were we even watching the same game wiggy?! That comment is ludicrous. Mildenhall had no chance at cutting out that cross - however each and every cross he could claim (and in shocking conditions too) he did!

How you can criticise him when quite frankly he's one of only 2 or 3 players from Friday night who performed well is beyond me......

Darryl is GONE! GET OVER IT!

Kris, I agree that Francis had a poorish game yesterday, but he was playing out of position (doesn't excuse the mistake for the 2nd goal, but it does the positioning for the 3rd). Centre Back is a specialist position so he should be forgiven for mistakes when playing against arguably the best strike force in the division, although hopefully pushed back to right back next week.

Also, was I the only person who thought we played the entire match (bar last 5 mins when O'Don came on) with 4-4-1-1 formation, Dougie behind Barney? When Sawyer came on it was a change of personnel, not formation. For what it's worth I thought Dougie was excellent in that role, caused problems in the 'hole' and don't think critism is fair. It seems staggering to me that people are happy to tell Tilly he is tactically poor when they can't even tell what formation we play?

NO! I said Dougie's role is not as a goal scorer now and that's why - as you say Sawyer was used in a similar role but he doesn't have Dougie's vision.

Glad I'm not! I thought both looked creative in that role, and maybe thats one way to fit Macca, Grant and Sawyer in the same team in central positions.

The way to fit Macca, Sawyer and Grant in the same team would be to play Macca on the right of midfield.
Scored for fun down the flank in previous spells has the little Oirishman and it's a place i'd like to see him play.

But Francis has played centre-back for us in several games in the past and looked very comfortable indeed. In fact, his best performances for us last season were arguably at CB, where he barely put a foot wrong.

There's no excuse for his defending for Southampton's third goal. When you play at centre-half and your partner challenges for the ball, you drop in behind to pick up the second if it is flicked on. That's basic stuff you get coached at schoolboy level. Admittedly, Barrett should never have been beaten in the air as comprehensively as he was, so he was at fault too, but Francis completely failed to anticipate the flick-on.

I'd be less harsh on Francis had he been caught square by a clever pass in open play but this was from a goal kick and the ball was in the air long enough for him to adjust his position accordingly.

The 3rd goal was Barrett's fault, wrong side of Lambert.

Apart from a poor clearance which lead to the 2nd Southampton goal I don't think Francis done much wrong.
