Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-3 Southampton

Are you going to be calling for Tilson Out again at Christmas if we are not in the play-offs?

TILSON OUT????

weighing up the pros and cons, history blah, then no..but it might come down to him being pushed rather than of his own choice.

This season may underline Uncle Rons true desire to be 'up there amonst them' rather than mid table obscurity, playing the waiting game for the white elephant of a new stadium.

Stranger things have happened.

Ugh, I don't know what match some people were watching tonight. If we really do play badly, I can admit it - I was one of the most critical fans after the Brentford match, and the MK Dons was even worse. But tonight, we deserved the win.

First half, I think we shaded it. We looked up for it, inventive and incisive in attack and moved the ball about quickly. Once again, Lady Luck ***** on us though. The first goal was diabolical. Miuldy had BOTH hands on it and has it kicked out of them. By the letter of football law, THAT IS A FOUL. ct.

What letter of which Law?

To be honest, I was too far away to see whether he had one, two or no hands on it, but I would be surprised if he had it under full control. The TV pictures I saw last night weren't totally conclusive.

I was sitting SU front row ,right behind the goal and it looked to me as if he had both hands on the ball at the moment the guy connected with the ball. The scorer probably felt justified in kicking the ball as Mildy was bringing the ball under control immediately prior to the guy's contact.

That was pretty much my view from the East Blacks.

I've not read the whole thread so this may have been mentioned and covered, but why oh why did we take Freedman off for Sawyer and go 1 up front and 3-1 down ???

Could understand if Laurent was going to go up front but he didn't.

Strange strange strange

The positives

• Friend, sweet free kick, looked good going forward with Moussa, a nice link up progressing with those two, Also made some brilliant last ditch blocks to keep us kind of in the game

• Grant, the guy is amazing and i've thought so even when everyone was moaning about him in the stands last season, he has confidence now and has the tactical know how we need in central midfield, him and Christophe would be something to try in the middle

• Moussa looked better, was involved in every play and linked up well

• Barrett and Francis kept Lambert relatively quiet other than that we need M'voto back

At the end of the day Southampton are a Championship side and play like one, their movement, ball control and passing was amazing to watch and they knew we couldn't play at their pace so they hounded our guys as soon as we had the ball resulting in long balls in hope

It was frustrating but you have to look for the positives otherwise you might as well be miserable or go follow Barca

MOTM Grant

Well, for me it made sense... Freedman was playing slightly deeper to be creative, but their defensive midfielder was all over him like flies on sh*t. Replacing him for Sawyer intended to be a like-for-like substitution, with Sawyer playing in a Gerrard-style capacity and his liveliness could've caused their midfielder some problems, especially 60/70 minutes into a game in touch conditions.

Right idea, just didn't work out.

Miuldy had BOTH hands on it and has it kicked out of them. By the letter of football law, THAT IS A FOUL. How the both the referee and the linesman, who was parallel to the incident, both agreed that the goal should stand, I don't know. Friend's goal was superb. Southampton's second? An opportunistic shot fro the edge of the area that was going wide takes a bigger deflection than Peter Clarke's shot at Borient a few years back and completely wrong-foots Mildenhall. AAAAAH! Two of the most fortuitous goals you'll see this season. Their third was their only real goal and was, I admit, poor defending.

Second half, we bossed it. I think the opposite to what Lord Football thinks.....I think our midfield bossed it and continued to pass the ball around at pace, but they piled all their men behind the ball as soon as the whistle went for the start of the second half. They were very negative, and any side are difficult to break down when they play like that.

Overall, very disappointing, very frustrating. I feel cheated and feel that we were the better team tonight.

Mildenhall - 7 - Made some good stops tonight, especially the double one in the first half. Not at all to blame for any of the goals, one-on-ones are hard to win and he was off his line quickly to be fair, but Lallana is a good finisher.

Francis - 6.5 - Not bad, got caught cold with his defensive positioning sometimes and didn't get forward as much as usual, but made some good interceptions and tackles and seemed solid.

Sankofa - 6 - Not as impressive as he's been in the last few games. Didn't win enough in the air and seemed a bit clumsy in the tackle.

Barrett - 6.5 - Again, didn't win much in the air but was solid and we even saw one of his length-of-the-field-dribbles!

Friend - 8 - My joint MOM today, defended well, positioning much better, got forward to support the attacks well and scored a brilliant free kick.

Laurent - 6.5 - First half showing was an 8. Got forward well, looked brilliantly clumsy and ran at them, which scared them. Second half went a bit quiet and started to give the ball away.

Grant - 6 - Solid. Sat in front of the defence well and did his job without looking spectacular.

McCormack - 7.5 - Much better from Macca today, ran his socks off, hit some good long range passes, although his short range ones were still a bit wayward. Had a positive impact.

Moussa - 8 - Joint MOM. Good performance. Really starting to remind me of Gower. Excellent close control, cuts inside well, runs down the line with flair and generally looked to create a lot. Got a good pass on him too, found feet more often than not.

Freedman - 6.5 - Good in the first half. Never looks like scoring now as he's dropped deeper because his legs are going, but filled the link man role well, knocked the ball about well. Wasn't the same player in the second half though, got tired and started to get knocked off the ball too easily.

Barnard - 6 - Marked out of the game tonight, they knew he was a danger. Should have done better with his first-half chance. Ran his heart out but had little effect.

Subs:

Sawyer - 7 - Made a difference again. His running with the ball from one side of the pitch to the other is a trait of his, and other teams never know what to do about it. He has a vision which no-one else in the team can even think about matching - his threaded pass through to Sankofa demonstrated that. I still say we look more creative with him in the side.

O'Donovan - 6 - Still doesn't look like scoring. He doesn't bring much to the team IMO.

Jeff - 6 - Didn't really have long enough to make an impact.

Spildy should have cut out the ball from the cross in the first place, if Flavs had stayed as rooted as him there would be a he's too short outcry!

I think Mildy should have held the first shot of the "dynamic double save" as well.

Ratings from today's Southern Daily Echo:

Mildenhall 5
Sankofa 5
Francis 6
Barrett 6
Friend 5
Laurent 5
Grant 5
McCormack 7
Moussa 6
Freedman 7
Barnard 6

Sawyer 6

Referee 7 - The first goal was dubious but handled the game well, using common sense to take the tricky conditions into account

Sorry OldBlueLady but are you really Wiggy and have transferred your passion for Flavs to Macca you are starting to be very blinkered where he is concerned he was not the worse player on the pitch but was just another of the average ones as for friend thought he had one good free kick but Harding could have given him a master class in how to frustrate a player and prevent them getting any decent passes in. Thought Southampton were much quicker in all areas of the pitch and once they were 3-1 up were quite happy to contain us and we had no width or pace to open them up.

Don't tar me with the same blinkered, unhealthy, schoolgirl crush as this please!

Match report from today's Southern Daily Echo:

LALLANA THE STAR FOR SLICK SAINTS

Alan Pardew has spoken of management by ticking boxes. At Southend last night another was crossed off the checklist. In horrible conditions Saints secured their first away win of the season. Roots Hall was virtually under water before the match started. On a Friday night, under the floodlights, in the tight, old ground it was an intimidating atmosphere. Conditions underfoot were tricky as the rain intermittently poured down - and yet Saints came away with three points.

They played the conditions in the first half perfectly, knowing the right time to get the ball in behind and when to keep it down and pass it. When they did that they were as slick as the surface on which they were playing. Once they had the damage done by half time they came out in the second period and killed the game. It was a masterclass in how to secure a result in difficult circumstances.

It was very encouraging because if Saints are going to achieve anything in this division over the next season or two, they will need to win a lot of matches this way. There will be a lot of nasty away days to small grounds that will test character and spirit to the limit. Those that don't really want to be there will stand out. Sometimes an entire team can go hiding in such situations and, if that is the case, you can have long winters. But for Pardew it was a box ticked because Saints proved both individually and as a team they were willing to stand up to the test laid before them and passed it with flying colours.

Confidence should also be growing in the team after three wins in a row capped a very busy period, allowing Saints a short break before getting back to business and hopefully pushing up this league. As we all know, winning is a habit and it is one Saints have just managed to pick up. It hasn't always been easy but they have got there. And to see that ruthless side in their play, to see them go out and do the dirty things well, is terrific. We all know they have the quality and talent to outgun most teams in League One. But the question has been whether they can do the ugly things well too. On last night's evidence they can....

...Southend were not looking much of a threat, Kelvin Davis just having the odd routine save to make. But they got themselves level on 27 minutes when George Friend lobbed a curling free kick from 20 yards to the right of centre over the wall and into the top corner via the fingertips of Davis and the underside of the bar.

Saints suddenly had a test of character but they responded in just five minutes. The goal had a massive element of fortune about it as Simon Francis fluffed a clearance from a corner to the edge of the area. Morgan Schneiderlin pulled the trigger and the ball just struck Lallana and changed direction to leave Mildenhall helpless as it deflected into the net....

...Saints knew they had the goals they needed in the bank and came out after the break to ensure they took home the three points - and they did it clinically. In fact, the second half was deathly dull as they shut it down entirely. Waigo did briefly threaten on 65 minutes with an effort that was blocked by a terrific sliding challenge. At the other end the nearest Southend could come was a scramble that ended with Dan Harding clearing off the line. Right at the very death Davis had a rare stop to make, turning sub Roy O'Donovan's effort round the post before Lambert tested Mildenhall at the other end. But Saints had done more than enough to secure the victory by that stage. Another box had been ticked.

Different positions, Midfielders were far more involved that Barnard last night, I'm not saying Macca was the best player on the pitch but imo he certainly wasn't the worst.

And there speaks someone in a very measured and very sensible tone - cheers Scott.
