Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-2 Col U *Spit*

According to the Beeb we won;

2r6npyq.jpg

Terrible defending for the goals, looked shakey all afternoon. Lack of real creativity.

And worst of all; why play Laurent up front when you have Walker on the bench and Laurent is our most creative player.

Stupidity in the team selection.

PLAY LAURENT ON THE WING! GRANT IS NOT A WINGER!

We need to sign wingers, and not loanees.

Frustrating afternoon.

Lack of professionalism cost us again.

Professional selections - one change should be enough to accommodate a single player leaving when it's obvious Laurent is our only midfield threat.
Professional goalkeeping - sorry but that wall for the free kick was a joke. There were far too many in it with no threat from a right-footer. The 3-4 players who were actually outside the line of our left hand post were utterly pointless & then Joyce stands in the wrong place. I remain to be convinced that he couldn't have saved the 1st one but I'll give him the benefit until I see it.
Professional defending - how many time did we let ball bounce outside our area causing utter panic. Giving away the ball time after time in dangerous places.
Professional midfield - we need to get away from this 4 man central midfield it doesn't work & perhaps shows that someone like Carl Pettefer, who worked that wide line for a season despite being out of place, was under-rated as none of our current squad have a clue. Playing Granty out wide is utterly pointless.
Professional substitutions - too late as usual, but Moose was actually looking like a footballer for the previous 15 mins.
Professional team talks - compare "keep on doing what you've done 1st half as we're unlucky" to "get at them with pace early doors" & guess who! Not my random thoughts but what the managers said on BBC SX.
Professional strikers - we have one! He's got 17 goals. The next best scorer has only 3. How much longer will he be here?
Professional referee pressure - that git Izzet was working the referee all the time at every decision. Strange they got most of the dubious calls. Is it?
Professional tactics - what is our style of play? At least Culle Ewe know theirs.

Listening to the managers comments after the game it's not difficult to see why Boothroyd has managed at a higher level than Tilly ever will. Even the BBC guys had to point out that it wasn't the same pre-recorded interview after each game, they ask Tilly the questions, but get the same answers each week. Disappointed, dominated, unlucky, individual errors, not ruthless etc etc.

Cull Ewe were lump ball nothing special, in fact quite disappointing for a team in their position, though IMO Norwich weren't all that until they scored. But the A12 Scum did the ugly difficult things with a deal of professionalism we simply don't have. Yes we had better possession 1st half, but what's the point if you have a nice cuppa & a kip at half time?

And please can we get rid of those fecking Dougie Freedman memorial cones the team **** around with after half time. Barney didn't bother coming out for that rubbish & it didn't do him any harm!

Despite everything that's happened we are still a professional football team, thank God. But we need to be Professional, with a Big P, more often!

Did you see Walkers performance? Abject! Hasnt scored for nearly a year! Laurent is the only option, I wouldve put Scannell on the right.

Not harsh at all, he plays competitively for the reserves weekly, he also goes through the same warmup procedure Mildy does. If ring rustiness is an excuse he shouldn't be in the team. I agree that the rest of the team are equally responsible that Col Ewe shouldn't have got in those positions but Ring Rusty is not an acceptable excuse. As for who i'd play v Orient, i'd play Bentley!
As for the scannell comment, he hasn't got eyes in the back of his head and therefore would have seen Barney and the fact they both went for it would suggest that Barney didn't call for it either!

He doesn't play weekly at all. The reserves play perhaps twice a month, sometimes once a month, so Joyce does not play regular games at all. So he does all the warm ups? You or I could do the warm ups but that would hardly put us in the position to play in a match. Big difference training and doing goalkeeping drills toplaying matches.

Yes Joycey was poor today but on the other few occasions he has been called upon to play he has never let us down so let's not crucify him for one bad game.

Adam Barrett is one of my all time favourite players and I love him to pieces but he was truly abysmal today.

Walker - well he is a very lucky man that we have so few players in our squad and has been shown consistently not to be good enough at this level. Hopefully Hereford may take him off our hands in the transfer window as I personally would never let him near a Southend shirt again.

Bad day all round and it was not even that Col Ewe were actually that good a side, sadly they did not have to be to beat us. What really sickened me (and I have still not got over it) is seeing all those smug inbred ***** leaving our ground singing and celebrating, knowing they have Essex bragging rights now, that was truly the worst thing of all today and really sticks in my gut big time. :nope:

Those of you that think Joyce should have saved the first goal have obviously never played in goal.

The second - Not sure but the wall didn't look best positioned to me but then I'm no goalie either.

How many times did Macca let he ball bounce in front of him and then let someone else deal with it? He's incapable of taking control at the moment.

Joyce's kicking isn't much agreed but neither was Simon Royce's when he was top choice, In fact it still isn't!

Anyway speaking from a neutral point of view I thought the second half was good entertainment and Izzet is really short!

"I'd have put Scannell on the right" OK and who on the left, exactly?

The first goal looked like a header by an un-marked player straight at the centre of goal and the ball went really close to Joyce, who I thought should have saved it and the second Joyce had the wall with 3 players wide of the right hand post and the striker had a massive gap to aim at and he did perfectly. IMO Joyce was at fault for both but especially the second with his rubbish positioning of the wall.
I couldn't see the first goal because the pillar was in the way. Boothroyd moved Gillespie out to the left at the start of the second half and he crossed the ball in well. Other than that he was absolute toilet. How many offsides did he have in the first half as well as glaring misses? However, the goal summed up our problems. They worked the ball at pace which we struggled to do all day, and we made a key defensive error at a decisive time.
The second goal WAS Joyce's fault IMO, despite the well directed free kick. What is the point of lining up a wall (badly) on one side of the goal and then not letting the wall do its job by standing on the SAME SIDE of goal?! The Colchester player must have thought it was still Christmas day - he had such a big target to aim at.
Laurent got very little change out of a well organised defense. Even when he went back out wide they had two players on him who weren't going to fall for his tricks in the same way as Hartlepool did.
I am surprised by some of the other opinions on here. I thought Christophe did OK despite some moments of poor distribution. Francis and Morrison also played quite well despite one slip at a crucial time from each of them. Macca helped us to dominate midfield.
I find Malone a frustrating player. He can put some good balls into the box but often messes up set pieces and he is really dodgy in defense. His error in the first half should have resulted in a goal. I would like to see Herd back personally - he offers more going forward (including his throw in) and certainly doesn't make more mistakes than Malone.
Grant had a poor game by his standards - indecisive in possession and inaccurate in his passing. Moussa was actually better than he has been and I was surprised to see him subbed. It is interesting that many Colchester fans are singling him out for praise (Obviously they were impressed by him last year!).
I suppose it is a kind of justice - Colchester played better football than us home and away last season but gave us four points whereas we played the better football today against a workmanlike side but went down.

I'm no goalie either, but I'm sure its down to the keeper to organise HIS wall!!!

I really cannot believe the stick Joyce is getting. If Mildy had let in those two goals today we would not be having this debate, well maybe wiggy would.

Agreed about the wall. This is a moot point for me - maybe all goalies should position the wall so that they can actually see the ball as it's struck.

Shocking today so lets move forward.

Grant and Moussa to start in the middle lets TRY and offer some width so its Scans and Laurent out wide with Barney and Freedman up front. JFC and Macca down to the bench they were both 3/4s out of 10 today Granty is our best CM and Moussa deserves his chance in the middle.

Agree with the posts about the 1st goal but i think if you kick off and then conceed within 40 seconds then everyone is too blame including managment( where are the tatics?). Ball back to Macca who plays it to Francis who slices just beyond the half way line out of play WHY WHY WHY??

Around this time last year we managed to get some quality on loan Devite and Robinson and i fear our fate again is in the quality of the loanees we can get.

Before today i would say sell Barney if the money is right but looking at the table we may have to hold and let him walk for free in the summer as we cant risk relegation.

Bad bad tatics and tempo today and this must change for Monday.

Laurent - not a forward, offers us so much more when out wide and running towards goal. He is a waste with his back to goal IMHO

This isn't a positional issue: it is about the service he gets. With a central midfield of Christophe and McCormack we were always going to struggle to get decent service because we've got two central midfielders who can't pass to save their lives. This is then compounded by playing a third midfielder who isn't a great passer out wide. I don't have an issue with a central midfielder playing "wide" and tucking in - the likes of Pettefer and Bentley did to great effect - my issue is that then we had the likes of Maher, Guttridge and Gower who could all pass the ball, whereas now we only have one who can pass, Moussa.

In midfield you need at least two who can win the ball, you then need at least two can pass the ball unless you are going to play direct. Grant, Christophe and (in theory) McCormack can all win the ball, but none of them can get it to the attacking players in positions where they can hurt the opposition. When Christophe and McCormack aren't giving the ball away, they are playing poorly weighted passes that are either to slow or too far behind players, to allow the skill players to exploit the space they were in.

Fix the supply and you can get Laurent running at defenders through the middle and he'll be far more effective than when on the wing when he beats a man and then struggles to cross it to a Southend player.

Not felt like posting until now so here is my two penneth worth.

Overall............

1. Until they scored their first goal there was a complete lack of commitment to go forward at pace and try and cause problems.

2. No one with the creativity to carve out an opening in the vital final third of the pitch.
Far to many times we broke at pace from our own penalty line only for it all to break down 30/40 yards up the pitch.

3. I said to the guy in front of me seconds before their second goal hit the back of the net 'Jesus, you could drive a bus through the gap in our wall' and only got half way through my second statement of ' Why the f**k is Mildy standing ther...........' when the ball actually hit the back of the net and my head went into my hands.

4. If there was a prize for the team that can cause itself the most amount of problems in one season we'd win it hands down. Lacklustre attitude from the players, a baffling team selection from the boss and with those coupled together with his oh so old and predictable post match offerings have all added up to make it a day to forget.

Phil

Joyce, Grant, McCormack and Laurent were all awful. McCormack seemed to care only when we were 2 down. Back four were solid, JFC was class in midfield and have no idea why he was subbed rather than Grant. Barnard must be getting ****ed off having to deal with crap lumped up to him.

can't agree with that, JFC got caught in possession time and time again, once in the first half which led to a chance but two, three, four times in the second half. He kept on receiving the ball with his back to the play and dithered on the ball for too long. He done some okay stuff admittedly but it's criminal to lose possession 30 yards from your own goal.

Did you see Walkers performance? Abject! Hasnt scored for nearly a year! Laurent is the only option, I wouldve put Scannell on the right.

Simple. Play your most creative players in their best positions. Laurent is by far our best outlet and completely wasted up front. Has to play on the wing!

Coicidence that the last 15 minutes, when Laurent was on the wing, was our most dangerous? I think not.

My take on things..

Were going to keep struggling until we get some proper width and a decent forward to go with Barney.

Laurent is not a 10th if the player he is out wide and Walker, Dougie, Revell etc are not the answer. We basically had four destructive midfielders playing across the middle four. Totally devoid of any attacking ideas.

At the back I thought Francis was good for the bulk of the game and then he does the stupid switch off that he always does and gives the ball away so easily moments before there second goal. Morrison was amazing - Cant say enough how much I like him. Malone ***** himself everytime the ball comes to him and nothing worth keeping in my book. - Good set peices at times but that is it.

Joyce I cannot really defend. Cant really balem him for the first but I said to my old man look at the gap in the wall seconds before the farmer hit it. Sorry mate but you have been here two years now and never replaced Mildy on ablity. Not good enough and time to go.

Finally Walker - Came on - Didnt touch it for ten mins and then when he did was woeful. So ****ibg febble getting the ball in the box.

Mr Tilson I love you but you have a big old job on your hands. assuming Barney wont be about much I think you need as follows

New Keeper
Left Back
1/2 centre halves
2/3 wingers
2/3 forwards.

Good luck mate.

Agreed about the wall. This is a moot point for me - maybe all goalies should position the wall so that they can actually see the ball as it's struck.

I was in the south upper and as Joyce was setting his wall and standing in the middle of the goal, I pointed out to the guy next to me that the ball was going top corner as there was acres of space there. Bang, and the ball was in the net. Joyce is rank!

For a local derby, the majority of the team showed no passion, and as for Macca, trying to push the ref out of the way to get to the player he had a set to with was pathetic, McCormack needs to channel his aggression in a positive way, maybe then he might find a bit of form!
