Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Sittingbourne Town

For me the blame for today’s defeat is spread equally between players and manager. Maher selected three central defenders to do the job of two against Sittingbourne who had minimal attacking intentions. You would think our superior fitness would be key after 60 minutes but we didn’t make the opposition run around chasing us to make that happen. Sittingbourne just needed to stand around and watch while we played backwards and sideways sometimes slowly working our way out to the wings where our wide players didn’t have the pace to get past their man to get crosses in. We needed an extra man in midfield so bringing on Coker was the right thing to do but instead of taking off an unnecessary centre back (preferably Gubbins) a forward was sacrificed. Apart from KAF in the first 10 minutes nobody was prepared to drive at the back-pedalling Sittingbourne massed ranks to draw free kicks.
Our players didn’t show any urgency until the last 15 minutes. Despite all this we had enough chances to score over the course of the game but they ended up either half-hit straight at the keeper or screwed wide. It seems we have forwards who graft but not a natural finisher among them.
Sittingbourne deserved to win. They had a game plan. Defend in numbers, frustrate us by taking ages to take goal kicks and throw-ins. They were probably hoping to take the game to penalties but a mistake meant they didn’t even need those. Yes Bonne deserves flak for not putting his foot through the ball to clear but the rest of them are more culpable for not being able to score against “lowly opposition” in 96 minutes of play. I know what Sittingbourne’s game plan was. I don’t know what ours was.
This post sums it up perfectly for me

Bonne will rightly get a dressing down for that. However, the majority of the rest of those overpaid fraudsters impersonating pro footballers, have had 96 minutes to turn over a part time team from 3 divisions below. They all need to look at themselves in the mirror.

Too many of them simply do not understand what this club means to us, some appear to have lost that fighting spirit and need to be ****ed off out of it at the earliest opportunity. No excuse for lack of effort and pride in pulling on the shirt. Absolute let downs.

Moan at Kevin all you like, fact of the matter is these players are not good enough, at all.

Dreadful, the worst cup defeat in my memory (I thought Dover was the nadir), and Maher definitely needs to take responsibility. We looked lethargic, and half arsed in the challenge right from the start, why can’t you motivate you players consistently?

I was especially disappointed with Gus and Morton, both were almost unbelievably poor, and need to take a long hard look at themselves tonight.

The fringe players also proved to me that they’re not good enough. Gubbins was laughably bad and can **** off right now, possibly the worst CB I’ve ever seen pull on the shirt, he makes Dave Morley look like Beckenbauer.

KAF - nowhere near good enough either. His first touch is abysmal and he 100% cannot play in a two man midfield, defensively he offers nothing. Both him and Gubbins are a worrying product of our recruitment being hugely sub par in the last 12 months.

Maher - Jeez, have some balls man. It wasn’t that 3 up front wasn’t working, it was the non existent midfield. Bring Coker on for Gubbins and go 4 at the back FFS. I was convinced when Bonne & Waldron came on that Gubbins was going off…. More fool me.

Bonne ****ed up for sure, but why oh why did we not leave at least one player up front when they first got a corner in injury time. We cleared the ball with no outlet, so of course it came straight back. If Sittingbourne can keep 2 players up for every set piece, why can’t we at least keep 1 up? Negative safety first bollox from Maher that needs calling out.

I haven’t seen if Maher’s commented post match yet, but I hope he’s holding his hands up to mistakes today, if not I’m very worried he’s suffering from delirium.

Edit: Forget to mention Kendall, who also looks a poor signing. Plenty of effort, but very little quality. He looks to me like Callum Powell without the pace…

They aren’t. On the whole, the recruitment this season has been absolutely atrocious. Not helped by the delay in sale of course.

No hiding this summer and next season though. This **** will not be accepted like it has been this season…

Was so close to throwing my shirt and coat onto the pitch at FT, genuinely never been so frustrated by this club before, fingers crossed for next season I suppose

Off topic probably , but we never seem to sign a player with any flair at all, just position fillers.

I have to say that when the Sittingbourne goal went in I stood up and watched their fans. They went absolutely bonkers, they were ecstatic, a once in a lifetime moment for them. When the final whistle went they could not contain themselves and I watched enviously from the other end of the east stand. What those Sittingbourne fans went through today was fantastic, football gold and you can count those moments on the fingers on one hand for most fans. I remember watching Canvey 4-4 Port Vale in 2000. Canvey were 4-2 down with 5 minutes to go and they drew 4-4, the ground went mad.

Sittingbourne deserved to win, we have nothing to complain about. Oddly I feel rather upbeat having seen a golden moment for the opposition side. Yes we were no good, but one of those golden moments those Sittingbourne fans had today is on its way to The Blues. It will take time but hold on and we'll get there.
