Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Oldham

the very wost of league one - team of "professionals" doing a job and getting away with 3 points, terrible officials with whistle happy gunt who has never played the game tossing himself off on his power trip, sloppy Blues looking well off the boil -

yep I think Tilson got it wrong in the preparation - he was too neagtive and nervous about the result, the pre match focus was too much on concentrating and not giving it away - the team looked inhibited - a more confident frame of my mind might have been
better ...

Brushs comments about not passing well enough and hitting it long sort of back this up -

saw Laurent and Christophe out looking for their dinner (is there any decent food in Southend on a Saturday night ?) in company which although female looked more business based than personal.

We have a team (hardly a squad) of talented of young players who will progress so are bound to be sought after .... getting them to learn how to do the job, i.e. get results, in League one is difficult.

Talking of Tilsons mistakes (we all make them even sir steve) I thought Walker would have been an interesting start today - and if we hadn't had to endure the final Revell revival James might have had enough game time under his belt -

If RM is stuck he can give me the job cos I get it right everytime - ......afterwards.

PS - ended up on the A13 on the way in and saw a single magpie - so it was entirley as I expected -

On a seperate-ish note. I've heard that we're trying to fix up a loan deal for Joyce. Could this possibly be the reason why we've signed up another youth keeper? Seems a little odd considering we've already got Bentley, who is quite highly rated and Dunn is a older than him. Could Dunn possibly have been signed to sit on the bench as cover, as well as the odd youth and reserve game?

James Dunn. Signed from Fulham, he played for them in the summer U18 tournament at Roots Hall. He's 18 in December, so he's a fair bit older than Bentley.

I haven't seen much of Joyce, but my impression is that god-forbid mildenhall got a serious injury Tilly would get a loanee in. So I'd rather bring through some decent youth prospect and have them on the bench, rather than Joyce who just doesn't look a decent league keeper

I have to say that it was a poor performance by both teams! And that a draw would have been a fair result but if you do stupid things in the box you give away penalties.

In terms of strength in depth we are seeing that we have a real problem. Francis having to play at CB as MVoto was out. What happens if Barrett gets crocked!

Bearing in mind the size of the squad I think we have got off to a decent start and this will be a very tight season for most teams!

What do we have coming through the youth ranks in terms of Centre Backs?

Dreading work tomorrow... It is a long time till the rematch at BP!

Duran Reynolds - played in a bit of the pre-season stuff. Looks a bit like Boris Johnson as he has a mop of blond hair! Have seen him in the ressys a couple of times, and he's not been anything stand out.

just watched the extended highlights. Friend looks absolutely terrible! got done time and time again.

Mildenhall - 7 did the job.
Sankofa - 4 waste of space
Barrett - 5 can't even beat fatboy Gregan to the ball, gave away needless fouls and his Beckenbaueresque forays are just embarrassing
Francis - 5 floats in free-kicks, wont tackle, never looks like he gives 100%
Friend - 4 on a par with Ossy
Grant - 6 an off-day but moments of endeavour
Macca - 4 Maheresque, but lacks any quality
Christophe 5 for a tall bloke, cant head the ball, and doesnt actually do much
Moose - 6.5 better than Grant, some good balls, but lacks certain je ne sais quoi
Barnard - 6 bad day at the office, raised his hands at Hazell, should have been red. Didnt really shake the defender loose
O'Donovan 4 awful. no pace, no first touch, quite anonymous

subs
Sawyer - 7 why isnt he starting? he's the link between attack and midfield
Freedman - 7 for a sublime ball to Laurent, that gave us our only real attempt on goal
Laurent - 6 decent enough, maybe should have scored, but had a go.

The line-up was out of kilter. We had a back four of three full-backs, and a midfield of centre-midfielders. We pumped the ball high and lacked any creativity.

Like to see a line-up of

Francis Barrett Mvoto Herd
Laurent Sawyer Grant Moussa
Barnard Freedman

A pretty good summary by mr Phillips, echoing much of the discussion on here.

Not only was it pretty sick to watch the extended highlights but it also made you feel a little sick with the poor image quality on the film............perhaps it was Oldham's shirts? FWIW can understand why the penalty was given. It looked as though Friend slipped and fell onto the attacker, thus bringing him down. Even if it was unintentional ............no real surprise that it was awarded.

Didn't realise that I'd made a funny.....ho! ho! ho!

Interesting comment on the Oldham OS. Parker talking about the penalty incident says, "I've seen him coming (Friend) and been clever about it and he's cluttered into me". Don't know how to interpret that?

Agree with a lot of comments... Francis MOM easily.

Mildenhall ok, Barrett and Macca had bad days, Christophe, Grant and Moussa no better.

Sankofa and Friend were pretty damn average and offered not very much... however Friend did put over a couple of decent free kicks with pace that no-one attacked, which isn't his fault. Unlucky to have a goal disallowed I felt but I called the penalty before the lino!

Barnard and O'Donovan got no service at all, although on 3 or 4 occasions O'Donovan made great runs behind the defence but his first touch let him down. That may be match sharpness and hopefully will get better.

I felt the subs were made for the correct players but when they came on played in the wrong positions. I think JFC was taken off because he was on a yellow and was lunging about a bit. Having taken Grant off I'd have thought Laurent would have gone wide right as he'd been moaning all week about wanting to play there, with Sawyer moving inside to cover JFC and Freedman for O'Donovan in a swap.

I'm not too downhearted... as many have said it was a throwback to the pre-Tilson days and we haven't had many performances that poor so let's not all over react.

Oh, hang on though, this is Shrimperzone...

I haven't read any of the comments on here so far, so please bear with us if I repeat what has already been said.

Saturday was a throw back to the days of pre-Tilson. We never got going, our tempo was slow, our passing was off and we run out of ideas late in the first half.

With M'Voto being injured, although Francis did a very good job at centre half, we desperately missed him bombing up the right hand side. At first count, I can think of 3 goals his set up for Barney (2 at Cheltenham and 1 at Brighton) and his been a constant threat with his deliveries all season. Now, having him centre half was the right choice instead of Sankofa, who did nothing wrong at right back, as you don't want to make many changes to a defence.

Our right hand side was far, far too negative against a very poor Oldham side. Granty does a terrific job covering Francis when he bombs on, but with Sankofa not looking to cross the halfway line, Granty was really wasted out there. IF Sankofa plays right back, you need an attack minded right winger infront of him like Scannell or Laurent.

As for the two new guys, IF O'Donovan brought his touch along he could have grabbed a couple of goals. His pace is a constant threat, and I liked what I saw but, like I say, his touch wasn't quite there and you could tell Barnard and O'Donovan had only played together once as their link-up was disappointing. Both kept making the same runs, and O'Donovan didn't win anything off of Barnard's flicks. Friend, at left back, was very disappointing. Forget the penalty, as it was never a penalty, he was very poor. I'm prepared to give him a chance, as I am with all of them, but if he continues to play like that he will be gone when his initial month expires.

All of the officials had a poor game, and I did expect it from the ref. He is always terrible when I've seen him, but it was the lino infront of the East that gave the penalty. Never ever a penalty. Bearly any contact, then they both fell over. Very disgusted with the decision.

Saturday showed the bad side of our midfield. Its obvious its set up so we are hard to beat, and 2 defeats this season backs that up, but he need more options off the bench. Without Francis providing anything from the right, we struggled to create chances. We need a quick, lively winger to bring on for Grant/Moussa to liven it up and stretch defences. Laurent maybe able to do that job, he wants to play right, yet was brought on up top instead of O'Donovan. Sawyer isn't a right winger, he needed to come into the middle of midfield, but it never happened.

Onwards and upwards to Brentford tomorrow night, which will be my first away game of the season.
