Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Oldham

always find it interesting how differently people see the same game, JFC had probably his best game this season except for one mistake toward the end of the game where he gave the ball away when the boys were finally getting some good passing going, he was shortly subbed after this even though McCormack had been making glaring errors all game, hopefully McCormack will get his final yellow so Sawyer can get a start and get the team playing creatively going forward, we are in dire need of something extra going forward

Francis needs to go back on RB Herd LB M'voto hopefully fit can be back in and Sawyer in for McCormack and we might start seeing something more going forward yet still have solidity at the back

as i said everyone see's it different though
Yes, but not everyone sees it right..... Agree with what you say about McCormack in the main but don't know how you can say anyone had their best game of the season today. Christophe has not been at his best this season and nearly played us into trouble on several occasions before the one you mentioned.

Can't even be bothered to rate them after today's performance.

Barney is our top scorer and publicly says that a lot of his goals are down to Simon Francis' quality delivery, so what do we do? Switch him to centre back. It was clear at Brighton last week that as soon as he switched to CB the creativity went and we looked a far worse team as a result.

One of the other posters called the subs correctly like I did - Sawyer for Macca and Laurent for Grant. Sawyer has never played well on the right - so we stick him there. Laurent says his best position is right wing so we stick him up front.

The only players to come out of today's game with any credit were Mildy who got us out of jail a couple of times, Franno - who played pretty well at CB and for a short spell at the end Friedman who added a little spark. Shame we didn't start like this:

Friedman

Francis Sankofa/Friend Barrett Herd

Laurent Sawyer Christophe Moussa

Barnard Friedman/O'Donovan

Surely even the most blinkered of Barrett lovers wouldn't even think of awarding him above a 5 ? Oh. I see we have a few that obviously missed several needless fouls given away, several balls given away, getting into trouble several times when trying to go forward. Have we now reached the point where he has less than 2 years left on his contract ?

As for the game today. Here's my summary.

CACK

I'll try to be fair on Donovan. I understand that was the first time he'd worn a pair of football boots. Hard to work out who can walk away from today with too much dignity. Probably Francis, Moussa, JFC, Grant and Barnard. Barney's often the architect of his own problems but today he was getting no protection at all from the officials (I noticed him being clattered a couple of times off the ball) and no assistance from his strike partner.

A bit harsh on O'Donovan I think ORM. His movement off the ball looked pretty good to me, just that none of our midfielders noticed - I can see him getting a few goals if sawyer gets into the team - although I hope he works on his first touch in training this week

Surprised to hear that JFC was being watched by blades. Listened to snips on blues world and it sounded awful. Tilly needs to consider how he sets up the midfield when playing average teams at home.

£200k for Macca, I'm not sure whether we or Millwall are more mental!

Ah gawd, he dont half put his foot in it alot doesnt he?

Tilly said:
"I haven't seen the penalty for their goal, but being at home I expected us to be more creative."

If he wants us to be creative at home, then PICK CREATIVE PLAYERS. Sawyer and Laurent - at least at home.

I dont mind 4 tight midfielders away and nick a win or a draw - good job, but at home you have to go for it.

He never, ever seems to learn. Never changes the team tactically before a game and never makes the right subs at the right time.

Yes, but not everyone sees it right..... Agree with what you say about McCormack in the main but don't know how you can say anyone had their best game of the season today. Christophe has not been at his best this season and nearly played us into trouble on several occasions before the one you mentioned.

i guess i didn't see all his mistakes as all who were sat near me were praising the way he played up until the moment i mentioned, i've not been impressed with Christophe this season so far, but i know what he's capable of and today he showed alot more of what he can do equally he did against Millwall, maybe i have fanboy goggled vision but thats my opinion

We were playing today? Oh right I must of missed the game because the crap that was on the pitch bored me to sleep.

A complete and utter disgrace of a performence against a team that was awful. How can we draw against Leeds, smash Orient, beat Brighton away and then have such a ***** result against a very very poor Oldham side.

My one point from everyone elses ratings is why is everyone rating Christophe's performence so highly? I thought he was poor, he gave the ball away too many times, poor passing, poor tackling and well just a poor performence and deserved to be subbed. Sawyer should of started ahead of him or Macca.

This sort of performence is the sort that is from a team fighting relegation, the players need to buck their ideas up and lets just hope this was as Tilson would say 'A bad day at the office'.

A bit harsh on O'Donovan I think ORM. His movement off the ball looked pretty good to me, just that none of our midfielders noticed - I can see him getting a few goals if sawyer gets into the team - although I hope he works on his first touch in training this week

totally agree mate, the guys got great movement and some decent pace too so adds that extra bit of danger when countering

Ok not a great result... bad day at the office... I am not too upset tbh

OK I Counted 65 Oldham fans... I am old school but under 7000 at the Hall The South Upper and West stand looked pretty full when was the last time we got lower lower... ? I come from the days with 3500 in a 35,000 Stadium Roots Hall was.... in the 80s we was hit big time by the football hooligans …. In the 60s 1970 we got 9000 plus but supporters was scared to go to the games etc

Anyway well done to the Boys in the west stand you made good noise

Probably be a lot lower next game as that frankly was akin to watching a Michael Buble concert.

Need a centre back in so we dont have to move Franno out of his best position. A right winger so we can stop playing defensive players in 3 out of 4 midfield positions. And please Tilly stop getting in pointless loaness left backs when we have a cracking prospect in Jonny Herd, someone who may make the odd error but is generally solid and gets forward well. We've lost enough good young players through lack of games, dont lose another one.

Okay - we were rubbish today. Cant defend that, as we were playing a quite frankly awful Oldham side who quite obviously came here today for a 0-0 and came up trumps with a penalty that looked very dubious from where I was (East Blacks - not seen the highlights yet)

Didnt help that we didnt get off the starting blocks today and we had the worst referee I have seen in ages - what was our goal disallowed for - no flag and it looked perfectly okay from where I was...??? On that basis, playing terribly, rubbish ref and poor opposition - fairly obvious their only real chance was the penalty, and they took it, and our only real chance went sailing over the bar a couple of minutes from time. Today reminded me of those woeful freezing January Tuesdays a few short years ago at the bottom end of league 2and the spectacurlarly bad game at MK Dons at their old ground a couple of years ago where we were just as bad as today, it was freezing cold and raining, and we lost. ....... on that basis we have loads to be thankful for !!

At least we have the potential for better things these days, despite today being a very bad day at the office.

The players:

Mildenhall 6 - Didn't have much to do, did nothing wrong.

Sankofa 5 - Looked okay defensively, but didnt show any potential going forward. Why wasnt he at CB at the start alongside Barratt, with Francis out wide? That would give us the benefit of Francis's crossovers and crosses - which they must have worked out eventaully because it was interesting they switched at the end. If there was an original plan it backfired spectacularly. This isnt a dig at Osei particularly - I just think we didnt do our homework!

Francis 7 - despite the whinges that people send his way, he is good and we missed him in a full-back position. AT CB he looked solid - MOM for me today.

Barrett 6 - tried hard, but it all went pear shaped today!

Friend 6 - Thought he did okay, bearing in mind the rest of the team were also poor. First home game at RH, so the pressure was on him. The penalty looked harsh to me (as I say, havent seen the replay yet), so too soon to judge. Besides, just as well he was here - Jonny Herd had a late fitness test and made the bench, so think its good there is cover and he isnt forced to come back too soon and risk further problems.

Grant 5.5- as per Barratt, tried hard but it was completely ineffective.

Christophe 6 - Thought he was unlucky with his booking, the same and worse was going on everywhere. Worked hard, but ineffective today.

McCormack 5 - Forgot to come out f the dressing room today. Not what I expect from Macca.

Moussa 6.5 - another one who was ineffective today.

Barnard 6 - didnt have a hope today, think his marker was in love with him- dont think I saw Barney without someones arms round him for at least 75 minutes. Bad refereeing IMHO, the ref should have had words in the first 5 minutes!

O'Donovan 5 - Isolated, by a combination of poor service from midfield and Barney being caught in a clinch!

Sawyer 6 - The only thing I noticed were the turquoise wellies disguised as football boots!

Freedman 6.5 - The ray of hope on the horizon. Today was the day Doogie should have started the game, because his experience was invaluable today. Trouble is, I know why Barney and O'Donovan were picked...

Laurent 5 - Missed a sitter...

Oldham 4 - shockingly bad. I would put them as prime candidates for relegation.

Ref and Lino's 4 - think they were watching the same game ina parallel universe. Some of the decisions were bizarre at best and mostly ludicrous.

Bottom line is, Oldham came down to get a draw because they are useless, they mugged us for the penalty, and they very successfully did a number on us. They played the crowding tactics, so no-one had any space of time on the ball and we had no answer for that style of play. We lacked width and creativity today, just dont know what other options we had with out current sqaud of players.

Brushy sounded mightily p**d off on BBC Essex after the game! Cant say I'm surprised. Just hope it gets better Tuesday.

Tilly saying we didnt create enough chances against Oldham, ok then pick a proper winger in Scannell if fit, or at least find room for Sawyer. As we are away i doubt either of those, and it will be same again.

Well, scapegoat time again I see. I refuse to be drawn into another argument on the subject of our CMs, Sawyer did a lot when he came on though didn't he? Still say he and Macca in the middle is a workable partnership. Yesterday we lost due to our usual outlet down the right being denied due to Franno playing at CB. What happened? Well, Grant and Moussa just crowded into an already crowded central area meaning we were playing in about a third of the normal pitch area, there was just no creativity down the wings at all and Franny Laurent should've come on at half time on the right for Grant.

Oldham came with a game plan and that was to settle for a point. When they found out they could get away with playing like a load of thugs they upped the anti and did just that with the blessing of the officials. The chunky one in their back 4 was probably the most guilty of that and Barney was on the receiving end of a lot of it. The penalty? Well, I just don't see how the guy was not given offside before Friend "fouled" him, and I've seen plenty worse than that NOT given. Incidentally, no-one's mentioned the shot off the line in the 1st half that Friend cleared, I'd give him a bit more credit than some of you.

Historic moment - 5s all round from me, apart from Barney, Franny Laurent and Dougie who get 6s and Franno who gets a 7.

I understand Tilly gave them a real rollicking in the dressing room at the end and told them all to go away and have a long hard look at themselves today. Certainly the car park cleared VERY quickly.

Officials were dire - one of the worst set I've seen at the Hall, so no mark.

Man of the Match - SMIFFY for the best drumming display seen and heard in a long time!

Mildy 6 WE should have got their Keeper Brill
Sankofa 4 Poor
Francis 7 Best of the Defenders
Barrett 5 Must learn to by his mistakes
Friend 5 Herd is better
Grant 6.5 Great 1st half

Barney 5.5 Did very little apart from run around
O'Donovan 5 No decent service

Dougie 6.5 Nice ball at end to Laurant
