Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Oldham

Subs
Dougie 6.5 Nice ball at end to Laurant
Laurent 6 Should have scored
Sawyer 7 Wasnt given long enough

Are you serious? Dougie came on and was creative and driven, Franny came on and caused problems and NEARLY scored which is more than anyone else (disallowed goal from Friend apart) and Sawyer came on and did nothing for 10 minutes, and made 2 poor first touches when he did get the ball yet you mark him joint highest out of everyone? :stunned: God, and people say I'm blinkered! Sawyer is NOT some superhuman being! And he still needs to pull his shorts up!

Does anyone know why the goal was disallowed? Linesman didn't flag for it.

I think they said on BBC essex in the post match interview (could of been Brushy in his one), said it was for shirt pulling or holding. Something like that. The thing that goes on in the pen box for every corner or free kick and is sometimes given and sometimes not I am guessing is the type of thing he was referring to.

I am very angry today but i was f'ing fuming yesterday.

Every single thing about yesterdays performance was inept.

I'll start with the tactics of Tilson. How the f'ck can you play four central midfielders at home let alone away is beyond me. Macca cant pass or run JCF cant pass or Run Grant can run with the ball but cant pass, but all can tackle although i saw little evidence of that yesterday.
Moussa is a central midfielder and has got it all , but gets overlooked by the above. Lee sawyer is the best midfielder by a long way at our club yet cant get a game.

Might i suggest a midfield of Laurent Moussa Sawyer Scannell Or Moussa JCF Sawyer Laurent. Atleast we might have a chance to do something which we failed to do yesterday and actually get around the back and cross from the byline.

In addition if i was o'donnovan i would be really f'cked off. The bloke is a class act but had to feed on misplaced passes and balls over the top. It doesnt take a genius to work out that balls on the deck or between the defenders is what he needs to get goals.

Everything about yesterday was a throw back to the games before tilly took over. Grow some f'king balls tilly and make changes . Players need dropping to improve and that is certainly the case at the moment because you are getting it so wrong.

To sum it up. Sh;t game sh;t crowd sh;t atmosphere sh;t officials sh;t tactics and if we play like that at brentford we will get punished.

If i were Tilly i would be looking to bring in another centre half left back ( let friend return) and a winger (like hrk). Barrett had a nightmare yesterday and mccormack , but we all know they are immune from being dropped. Its threatening to spoil morale and results.

Oh and also is was very refreshing to hear Brushy doing the interview on BBC Essex for a change as im a little fed up of like i says and the phrase work our socks off. Brushy told exactly like it was, something i appreciated.

Never really do ratings but after yesterday sham I am going to join in

Milldenhall - 5. Made a few decent saves but his distribution is woeful.

Sankofa - 3 Hand on heart I could do a better job at right back.
Francis - 7 Out of position but you wouldnt know it. Best player in my book
Barrett - 5 Please stop running with the ball when you last man
Friend - 5 Few good balls forward but a poor mans herd

Grant - 6 Worked hard but offered little
Macca - 5 Poor passing and little going forward
JFC - 6 Worked hard and won a few good tackles but poor going forward
Moussa - 6 Again one of two good balls but below par

Roy - 5 One good shot but so many miscontrols and where was the pace he promised?
Barney - 6 Tried hard but no service = no goals

Sawyer - 4 I love him but woeful today
Laurent - 5 Should have scored at the end
Freedman - 6 Great ball for Laurent at the end and looked up for it.

One the whole the worst game I have seen since Boston (H) a few years ago.

To be fair, we would get murdered with that midfield! You need some balls in there and your second option is better. We performed really well with JFC and Sawyer in the side last year and I think most people are surprised that hasnt panned out this season.

I wasn't there yesterday, would anyone suggest that macca has been playing within himself whilst on 4 bookings?

In a more serious mood, apart from disappointment following yesterday's game, I feel a certain degree of anger. In my opening of the pre-match thread, I set out the likely scenario for the match and events turned out pretty much as I predicted. I don't claim praise for this as the majority of us on here, with a little thought and research, will have probably come to the same conclusions as I did.
It is rare that I come on here with open criticism of Steve Tilson but you have to wonder whether rigidity of his selection and his unwillingness to adapt his tactics to the opposition we face, may be one of the reasons he is still with us and hasn't moved on to higher things. OK, I know he has an awfully small squad and that if the team play far below their potential, as was clearly the case yesterday, it doesn't matter, in the end, what side you put out.
However, it was SO blatantly awful, even after the first half-hour, that Tilson should have considered already making a change. The only excuse I can make for him was that the team was SO bad that he couldn't, for the life of him, decide who to bring off. Following that sterile first-half performance, I couldn't believe that he would not make changes at half-time.........but NO, we continued with the same formation until the sixty-sixth minute and then the changes we did make, as have been indicated on here, were rather like puting square pegs in round holes. I wouldn't concur with Steve Tilson's statement about there being a lack of creativity on the pitch, I think foremost, there was a lack of creativity in the selection of the side.
Well, there is a chance to correct things very quickly on Tuesday night. I would imagine, like everyone else, I'll pray that M'voto is fit to play. Following that, I would hope that Steve Tilson will select a team which, whilst solid, shows just a little bit more flair and creativity. We all know that he hasn't got that many options ..........
but he has got some and I would like to see no sacred cows. No player has a 'god given right' to selection........if someone is not performing, they make way to give someone else a chance.
I know that it is only our second defeat of the season but losing to such a poor side at home and showing such naive tactical awareness makes it so EXASPERATING.

We had no width on the right with francis playing CB, Sankofa is not an attacking full-back and even when he did get into advanced positions he hit the first man every time we could have played Grant at RB and Laurent on the wing, for me Tilly got that wrong but to be fair even after the three subsitutions we were still ****.

You cant blame Tilly too much, he is doing the best with the tools he has.
Apparently Oldham had about 8 players out injured yet still fielded a team good enough to win. Can you imagine what our side would look like with 8 players injured?
I do feel he has made a big error in getting a left back instead of a centre back in though, unneccessary. Herd has always done well and must be getting sick to the point of wanting out. If he is getting dropped for underperforming then why arent other players like Macca, Grant and Barrett? It seems like one rule for some and one rule for the rest.
It comes down to our skeleton squad and our persistent failure to add permanent quality, meaning we have a revolving door or loanees which disrupts the line-up, means players cant strike up a relationship with others and produces performances like yesterday.

I'll pray that M'voto is fit to play.

If he plays anything like he played against Brighton, i hope he's not.

Totally agree, if you're not performing, you deserve the hook, but we've seen time and time again, that it takes something of catastrophic proportions to drop players. And after yesterdays debacle, i'd say Macca, Friend, Sankofa and JFC all deserve the hook. Won't happen though. They'll all start on Tuesday.

Not gunna bother with ratings because yesterday's game was jank. End of.

Only bits to note were;

- Friend is no better than Herd.
- JFC cannot pass, or attack. He can only go sideways and back
- Macca played crap, but won't be dropped. Complacency on his part?
- Mousse needs to be played central. He is not a winger/the new Mark Gower
- No width whatsoever. Laurent should have been on from the start
- Playing 3 defensive midfielders? you're not set up to go for the win
- Zero creativity coming from midfield
- Barny got found out against physical defenders. He didn't get a look in

The ref, oh dear oh dear. What a ****.

Our goal that was disallowed looked perfectly legal

To be fair to Tilly yesterday, I dont think it would have mattered what he did or what tactics he was trying to use, because when a side underperforms as badly as we did yesterday there isnt a change of any tactics paying off anyway.

Brushy said in his interview that for a team to do okay, you need at least 8 of the team to be playing well. Yesterday, we had 8 who might as well have not been there! Notable exceptions were Mildy (because Oldham were so bad they werent a threat really anyway), Francis, laurant and freedman.

The most anoying thing was that we wasted the opportunity to get 3 easy points yesterday!

In fairness to M'voto he was carrying that injury at the start of the Brighton match and that probably was the reason for his uncharacteristically poor performance. Probably says more about the strength in depth of the squad, that Tilson preferred to take a risk on a player clearly not 100% fit, than bring in the available replacement.

Exactly, Sankofa showed yesterday exactly why.

My thoughts exactly, oldham were absoulte toilet (according to their OS it was a fully deserved 3 point for them, hahaha i dont think so) yet we managed to create nothing. I'm praying macca gets booked next match so he gets suspended because he really needs a kick up the arse. Sawyer has to start, he seems to be the only midfield player able to go forward.

Also the sooner m'voto comes back the better so Francis can go back on the right, not because he is a poor CB i thought he played well but because sankofa offers absolutly nothing going forward. People can say what they want about his crossing but i would rather have francis who will put 5 out of 10 decent crosses in then sankofa who might aswell be in goal he sits so far back.

I agree about Dougie and Laurent but now the highlights are out you can see what a terrific pass Sawyer played to Freedman to set up the Laurent chance. Two other reflections on the highlights:
1) Why was the disallowed goal disallowed? I have played it over several times and can see no reason.
2) The penalty does look like a penalty! What the HECK was Friend doing?

Didn't ever say it wasn't, but that was quite a bit later on nearer the end of the game. Haven't seen the highlights yet, do they show the guy being offside?

Ok, here we go 44.30
