Southend High Street Owl man.

Didn't Salvo get mugged this summer!?

As for the Owl Man, yep, certainly not seen him in ages. He used to pop in to Golden Disc where my brother worked and flick through the CD's, which certainly fooled people who thought he was totally blind. Think he is partially sighted.

Does anyone remember an elderly couple who used to play the keyboards down near where Woolworth's used to be?

They were top drawer!

Not sure if he is a cult figure but for the last 17 years I swear I have seen the same bloke every time I go down Leigh or Chalkwell seafront.

He has long blonde hair, often rides a bike and dresses as if he is raving in the Balaerics circa 1990.

I know a mate who knows him well. Be back to you on that.

Great thread this, reading back.

On Cricket Hat Man, I'm sure there used to be a website about Southend that always ran an update on him and various sightings.

Yeah, he did. The guy is a harmless old man who enjoys bringing pleasure to others, frequently bakes cakes to take along for various charities to aid fund raising as well as his clown activities in the High Street. Has a heart of gold, whatever some may think of him. Lives up in Thundersley and travels down to Southend by bus!

Must admit, I've always liked him and he seems to keep the kids entertained in the High Street.

The sad thing nowadays is that older people who like to entertain children are looked upon with suspicion. Mostly unfounded.

There was a great story about Charles Hawtrey and how, when he retired to his home in Deal, Kent, he used to sit in the park and read stories to the local children who would gather around.

Nowadays, he'd probably be investigated as an eccentric drunk who can't be trusted!

Blond man was still riding his bike this summer. I once bumped into him in Goa in the late 90's and yes he was raving.

He was with another character from Southend and some Bollywood film Mogul had just offered them apart as baddies in his next film.

Picked up penny picking Steve last night in my taxi. The money he gets he uses on a couple of holidays abroad with his parents every year.

If this is the same guy,I was at school with him (He was a year or 2 older) Can't remember his name but once made the front page of the echo saving someone from drowning.
Last time I saw him was in Costa in the high street looking very relaxed !Top guy
