Although like I've said a few times, according to Chris Phillips he is and always has been Sturrock's number 1 goalkeeper target! So it's not that Sturrock's just taking another look at him, as apparently the only reason he hasn't already signed is wages.

To me people seem to be looking at this in avery simplistic way. Brown > Smith. But it's not just about that, we have a budget, overspend in one area ie. goalie and other targets and area's of the pitch will suffer (for example maybe if we hadn't got Freddy back in we could afford Brown). Sturrock thinks Smith is the best option for our budget that will allow him bring in others (Spicer/Brogan?), and that's good enough for me.

This would make more sense if people weren't talking about Smith's wages being the stumbling block. If the case of saving money were true, why not look for another target?

Sorry but the point still stands. Smith's wages demands can still be the stumbling block if he's trying to get more than Sturrock has allotted for that position. PS has clearly identified Smith as being the keeper that best fits our needs and wage structure, I think we can safely assume Brown would cost alot more.

Let's say Smith was on £1200 p/w at Swindon. Sturrock wants to get him for £1000 p/w, but Smith is insisting he wants the same level of wages. The closer the start of the season gets the more desperate for a new contract Smith becomes, he eventually signs for the £1000p/w Sturrock wants. We get our man without a) breaking our wage structure and b) without resorting to a lesser option.
