Because Bentley is 18 and learning his trade. Luggy has said that he is looking to loan him and Chambers out this season.

Am I the only one to think that we might go for 2 keepers now we are moving back to 7 subs. Luggy always had a keeper on the bench in his first season but didn't when it went down to 5 subs. Maybe Smith is the back up.

If Smith signs as back-up I'm reasonably happy with that.....if he signs as number one I'll be mortified! :stunned:

I would prefer bentley over smith any day of the week smith is the worst keeper i have ever seen in league one. what make sturrock think he will be good in league two

oh no you have got to be kidding me ............. do not like the look of this man , very poor turning up late for west ham game and IMO should not have even been given a 2nd chance does not look like a goalkeeper for us surely as a team who is aiming for promotion we should be looking at a lot better quality than swindon's released 2nd choice goalie

He wont sign as a number 2, get real. Bentley will be number 2. Tis very puzzling, what happened to Rhys Taylor who all by all accounts looked pretty decent?

why wouldn't he sign as a no2 when he was filling that roll at Swindon?

Apart from Evans, Luggy has done alright on the keeper signings so would be surprised if Smith ends up as our first choice.

I reckon he'll get the same treatment Mildenhall did when he arrived, Flavs was decent for us and following him when most fans didn't want him to be let go was always going to be tough for his replacement. It'll be the same for whoever comes in now as Daniels and Belford were excellent for us on loan and most of us can't understand Sturrock's reluctance to take either back (well in Belford's case anyway, West Brom may well be wanting Daniels to play higher this year).

Mildy wasn't given a chance in that first season from the fans because of Flavs departure, he'd have needed to be outstanding to be accepted by a lot of fans. The problem is I actually rated Mildy whereas this guy has been utter gash for a while now - I fear he'll get the same treatment or probably worse (especially as he didn't exactly endear himself to the fans against the Spammers).

Does anyone on here want him? Cos I haven't seen one poster say they do as yet.....

what gets me is that the 3 goalkeepers we have had in goal on trial, the 1 that looked worse is looking like being offered the job.....:stunned:

Maybe Brown has gone back to Hibs to sort things out there ready to move here, remember he's still a Hibs player. I don't see why we don't just get someone on loan for 6 months/the whole season, there must be so many young keepers out there at Premiership and Championship clubs who are 3rd/4th choice. Would save a bit of money too.

I'd like to believe that Brown is sorting out his move down but according to Chris Phillips Smith has always been the number one target and it's only wages that have been the stumbling block.

didn't Smith play for Cheltenham last weekend?

Yes he did and this was what the Cheltenham manager manager said after a 1-1 draw with Evesham

"Phil Smith did well and we'll see where we go with that. I'll probably be looking to get a younger goalkeeper and I would expect I couldn't afford Phil. Tristan Plummer has been in Portugal for the past year and has done well but he wants to get back. He is one we'll ask to come down to Wales with is.

So why we are taking a goalkeeper that is out of their budget but must meet ours!... Would be interested to know what the Hibs keeper wanted!

I'm not worried about a keeper. Was it Cloughie who said if they score 3 well score 4 or something along those lines. I believe Capleton is available  Morris was the best permanent keeper we've had in a long while.

I understand peoples negativity towards Smith, but if our opinion is based on 45 mins against West Ham in the pouring rain, then i think thats harsh. Yes, i know anout the whole turning up late thing and thats poor, but we have all misjudged a journey or two in our time and the weather and traffic that weekend was extremely poor. Swindon fans have slated him as well, but thats to be expected, we have done the same in the past of an ex player or two. When he has played against us i have always thought he has done ok, and he actually won player of the season at Swindon two seasons ago i think, so is he really as bad as people are making out? Belford is a no, get over it, looks like Brown might be a no as well, im dissapointed but thats football, Daniels is not coming back, so if PS thinks Smith is his best option im happy with that. Just remember the stuff written about BBBC when he arrived, poor injury record, sending offs, cant score etc etc, plenty love him now.

Same old Southend/Sturrock. Gone for the cheap option that knowone else wants. Did you see him in the warm up, doesn't even catch right, hands all over the place. Taylor, Brown, looked decent and Morris who we've let go was far better than baldy shapes up, I despair of Sturrock lately.
