There was a match report in the Times today. penned by Chris Phillips, so I'm assuming they got our man at The Echo to knock this up...
Shrewsbury Town 1 Southend United 1
Tyrone Barnett began repaying his large transfer fee by scoring an excellent equaliser on his Shrewsbury Town debut against promotion rivals Southend United
Barnett signed from Peterborough United on transfer deadline day for a fee believed to be about £300,000. He was delighted to immediately get off the mark, easing the inevitable pressure placed upon him. “It’s just what I needed,” the 29-year-old striker said.
“It was good to get my first game and my first goal. I couldn’t really have asked for much more, other than three points. It was a great feeling to see it go in and it was an important goal because it got us back into the game.”
The draw saw Shrewsbury surrender the top place in Sky Bet League Two as they slipped to third in the table, but Barnett is just delighted to be involved in a promotion push.
“I’m over the moon to be here and I’m buzzing to have the opportunity to play for a team up towards the top of the league,” the forward said. “I can’t thank the manager enough and I want to repay him by helping to get Shrewsbury promoted.”
Shrewsbury have yet to be beaten at home this season but they were second best for large spells against Southend.
Barnett’s contribution, though, came as no surprise to Phil Brown, the Southend manager. “Tyrone Barnett certainly made a difference when he came on but we know what he’s about,” he said. “We also tried to sign him but were quoted a figure of around £300,000 and we couldn’t afford that.”
The visiting team went close to scoring after six minutes when Joe Pigott, the on-loan Charlton Athletic forward, saw his close-range header well saved by Jayson Leutwiler, the Shrewsbury goalkeeper.
Moments later, Leutwiler also smothered Adam Thompson’s well-struck volley from Ben Coker’s corner, but there was nothing the Swiss could do to stop Southend taking the lead in the 54th minute when Jack Payne, their top scorer, bagged his seventh goal of the season.
The attacking midfielder was picked out by a quickly taken free kick by Michael Timlin before slamming a rising right-footed shot into the top corner of the net.
Shrewsbury immediately brought Barnett on in place of Mikael Mandron and switched to a far more attacking formation that enabled them to get back into the game.
Connor Goldson, the defender, had a close-range header well saved by Daniel Bentley but, five minutes from time, the young goalkeeper made a rare mistake as he lost the ball while under pressure from Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro.
Barnett was on to hand to fire a brilliant shot, from an acute angle, into the back of the net via the inside of the right-hand post.
Brown was left with mixed feelings. “I would have taken a point before the game but it was there for the taking and it’s disappointing we couldn’t hold on,” he said.
