Breaking News Scott Spencer to sign

Foran was a shocker though.

He might've been shocking at Championship level, but we never saw him feature in League One because of his "extra-curricular activities". I have a sneaking feeling that he probably wouldn't have been that bad at all down here... Better than James Walker at least.

Agreed. And he certainly wasn't thrown out of here on account of his footballing abilities, or lack of.

I couldn't make a post in which i said that Tilly's record with signing goalscorers is good without at least mentioning Foran though....

To be honest the couple of times he did play I didn't actually think he was that bad.

Tilly has a cracking record with strikers, which is why I think people should have a little faith here. The ones who he has signed who have not worked out have invariably been targetmen (Paynter, Ricketts, Harrold, Revs) and frankly the best targetman in England over the past decade (Emile Heskey) has been mocked by fans wherever he has gone which suggests that that type of player will never be appreciated for a lot of supporters.

James Walker and Richie Foran aside, every other non-targetman forward that Tilly has signed permanently has been a decent player. Charlie MacDonald and Gary Hooper didn't work out here but have shown elsewhere that they can play at this level, and the same may end up being the case with Walker.

Foran was a shocker though.

For possibly first time Ill kind of disagree with you Beefy! Signing decent strikers seems to be something we can do, getting anything out of them seems harder.

On one hand we seem to sign plenty of good strikers:

Eastwood and Barnard have been quality, Goater was very useful.

McDonald, Hooper and Paynter have all moved on and done reasonably well (very well with Hooper).

There theres Foran, Harrold and Revell ( the last two I still think were better than made out).

Walker really hasnt impressed me but who knows.

So whilst he has signed plenty of decent strikers the issue I have is we dont seem to get the most out of them, and rather than do so we seem just to keep signing more and more without realising that they all need to get the ball in dangerous areas to score.

people seem to forget strikers need service (freddy and stan aside) and we arent the most creative team in the world

Tilly identifies good strikers, doesnt always necessarily get them to play to their best for us. Obviously Roy O Donovan and Jabo Ibehre are exceptions as they are both utter gash.

Foran was a sort of target-man forward though as his style of play was all about launching it long towards him and letting him elbow the centre-half (or full-back) out of the way to win the header.

Otherwise agree with you.

Doesn't look good enough from this article. In 2008 he was rejected by Yeovil (2 places beneath us at the moment) after a trial. He only made 3 sub appearances for MACCLESFIELD (18th in league 2 at present) when on loan there for a month. Oldham manager Ronnie Moore said "He is not the biggest and his heading is not brilliant." Oh dear. That reads like a description of Walker, Scannell and Freedman. This smacks of desperation to me. I know it's a free transfer and it's only until the summer - and maybe he'll resurrect his badly faded career - but I do hope that something much better than this comes up before the end of the month. Hope he proves me wrong.

Looking on the bright side then!

Sorry, but where were you disagreeing with me? It seems like you're saying the same thing I was! From Dudfield to Eastwood to Barnard, we've signed decent strikers. Whether we could get the best out of some of them is another question, but they've been decent players and even those who flopped here have held their own elsewhere.

Wasn't Laurent rejected by Brighton and Barnet?

Some players need time, others play better in some systems and places than others.

I don't think he will be an instant hit, but may do enough get a contract and to kick on next season.

Doesn't always follow though. Wasn't Laurent turned down by Barnet following a trial there?

Clearly it is a bit of gamble which is why he is being offered a short contract. I just hope everyone gives the guy a chance.

It's also pretty much what the bloke on 5Live said when he described Eastwood popping up at the far post to put Coventry one up in the Championship today.....

In fact if that is the worst someone has to say about him, he's probably quite a handy player, so I'm actually feeling a lot more optimistic about this signing than before I read your post.

In reality, what generally decides whether a player is a success at a club isn't so much whether that player is "good" or "bad" but whether his skill set is a good match for that club, its style of play and the players that player will be playing alongside.

Ronnie Moore said "He is not the biggest and his heading is not brilliant."

I would never, ever care what that fool said.

Besides, Spencer wouldn't be brought he to be a target man, so it's not an issue. He's got a bit of pace and I'd suggest that'd the main reason we're bringing him in, because we've got naff all of that.

Does anyone know when we are going to sign him? Can't wait to for us to sign a striker permanantly for once! And Scott Spenny, Only 21, looking forward to seeing him play. Hopefully he does good for us if he signs. :)

I disagree. Walker and Scannell have pace. Laurent is also deceptively fast. What we lack is quality final balls, a bit of skill in the box and killer instinct in front of goal - only Barnard is really providing these things with any consistency.
And if Barney goes then who will be our target man? Revell? He is the only one with any height up front apart from Laurent who we really want on the wing.
