Running Thread

Can anyone recommend a website where I can measure the distance of a run? Up until now I've been using Google Maps which I find to be quite cumbersome.

I ask because I did a run this week (1st for some time) where I was surprisingly fast and my watch said the run was 9.15 km (still building up to 10k after my back issues). However, I thought the run was only around 8.5km. If my watch is accurate I was much faster than I expected!
I use Strava always accurate

Dave Smale, Southend Athletics Club, teacher at Chalkwell, Shrimper etc won London Monuments Half at weekend with time of 1 hour 8, finished with a jog in.
He is hoping for a good London time.

I was just under half an hour behind him haha.

I’d highly recommend this half marathon for those into their running. It’s the London Landmarks Half Marathon. Running on the closed streets of London is always pretty special, and plenty of spectators out on the route. A few too many sharp turns back on yourself, but you take in a lot of London’s landmarks. I finished in 1:37:56.

I once worked out that Mo Farah runs 10km about 20 minutes quicker than me. I then extrapolated and worked out I should therefore be able to run a marathon in about 2hrs 25, i.e. 20 minutes longer than him.

How could you not be inspired watching that yesterday? I was watching it at work, then had to jump on the treadmill and watch it while clipping along doing my own 8 miles.

Both the winners in the elite men and elite women’s races were incredible, especially the women’s race.

It’s a magical race, the best I’ve ever ran in, entered the ballot again, and will wait for my 7th or 8th rejection in a row now.

I'm the same BW re entry ( Though have applied for charity place as well ), the atmosphere was brilliant and brought out the best in the human race.
Just shouting out a strangers name and seeing the lift it gave them was worth the effort and see them get another burst of energy
Seeing my daughter brought tears to my eyes as she went pass high fiving and tears coming down her face as the end was close by

I did the virtual. The left IT band started complaining at 4 miles, by mile 19 it was screaming especially when I landed heavily on a kerb. Next 7 miles was walk/run with walking being 95%.
It was never going to be quick as I’m not a long distance runner, but I will take 7.01 in those conditions and that injury.

Doesn't matter the time as long as you finish, well done

I ran it in 87, 88 & 89 having put in multiple entries in my family's names. Overall i got 3 acceptances & 8 rejections. Back then it was limited to around 23,000 i think.
Good job they didn't check details, as in 88 i ran under my eldest sons name & finished in 3hrs 19 mins. He was only 4 at the time!.

Running the Colchester Stampede 10k on Sunday my first large running event for since doing the Southend Marathon about forty years ago. So this week I did not run on Thursday then on Friday just walking up stairs my right knee clicked and is now giving me a bit of pain so dosing myself up and readjusting my planned finishing time. 😡

Been reading through this thread this morning and you’ve all inspired me to get out and do some running.

Any tips for a 30-something, slightly out of shape beginner?

I did not run regularly for over 30 years which I now regret although as you can not re right history I now try to enjoy every run whilst fit enough to do so.

My advice for what it’s worth would be to set yourself goals but importantly make them realistic otherwise it will end in disappointment. Start slowly to build up on distances and speed whilst be mindful that some times when running it will seem harder for no obvious reason. Some cross training for core and leg strength along with Yoga is also beneficial and there are loads of options for those on YouTube.

Also when you are ready perhaps try a Park Run which is 5k we have several options around Southend.

Good Luck

Keep it simple, jog and walk, jog and walk for minimum of 20 minutes and repeat 2 or 3 times a week until you are doing the whole 20 minutes as a jog. Then you have cracked it.
Try Southend Flyers for a group run, they are very inclusive of new runners.
Getting your trainers and shoes on and out the door is the hardest part of most runs.
Enjoy

Monday evening 18:30 Chalkwell shelter. 16 minutes out and 16 minutes back at your own pace. Want to run/walk that’s fine.
The group hosting are the Flyers Slowcoaches
