Oh. Phew. Thanks a lot. At least now I know that becoming an incredibly famous, and largely popular, comedian "takes very little talent."

I'll bear that in mind when considering my future career eh?

Many people are famous with very little talent, especially these days: Jade Goody, Paris Hilton, Callum Best....

And Manning wasn't "largely" popular, maybe in the 1970's but so was the Black And White Minstrel show, harp lager and the 3 day week. He was a relic, and a dinosaur from age that should be best forgotten

And if your future career is comedy, I'd avoid using Manning as role model, try people with genuine talent to make people laugh with some intellegence - Dave Allen, Lenny Bruce, Bill Hicks, or Harry Hill.

No it isn't! There are better ways to make people laugh than to use basic, insulting, ignorant stereotypes that are plainly wrong.

It's the lowest, most basic form of comedy and takes very little talent.

Bernard Manning isn't to everyone's taste I can see that and the mere mention of his name appears to have polarised opinions on here a great deal. FWIW I didn't find him any more offensive than a number of other comedians that ply their trade on the club scene.

The BBC has some interesting pieces on his death and portrays a man who has flirted with conroversy in terms of his on stage act, yet a man that has raised millions for charitable causes in his home town of Manchester.

For that second fact alone the guy should be respected and not pilloried.

What else, well my girlfriends family comes froma mixture of Spain, Portugal, Africa and Italy and guess what Mr MK we both laugh at Bernhard Manning or alot of other comedians on this earth even without racism.

MK, I'm not going to agree nor disagree with the views on this thread, purely because I do not want to become involved in the discussion. However, I'll point out one thing. Considering the subject contains "RIP" in the title, which obviously means Rest In Peace, I think it is designed to be a thread where people can pay their respects.

I'll be 100% honest and say I know very little about this guy, so I can't get involved in the rights or wrongs of what you say or anyone elses view, but as the thread was designed to pay respects you can hardly be surprised by your posts receiving such an unwanted response. If you have such views on the guy, why not open a separate thread to debate about his colourful past? That way if people want to just pay their respects then they can do in this thread, or if they feel the need to debate with you then they will pop over to the other thread.

Please though, either right, left or down the middle wing(!) just re-read your comments before you do post anything. Neither I nor the other moderators want to spend our time editing or deleting extreme posts/views which tarnish SZ.com's reputation. Thanks, Einstein

In light of PMs and MSN messages to me, I AM sorry that BM died. I would not disrespect the dead. Afterall, whatever he has done is over - he has a family that are hurting a lot now and my condolences go to them.
