RIP Bernard Manning

If he was responsible for that **** he should be doubly condemned :D

but shirley it was people like Ben Elton and his "gang" of "right-on" comics that changed British humour and was the perfoming deaths of people like Mr Manning and Benny Hill . I loved Ben "a bit of politics there" Elton and his famous "Gotta get a double seat" observations. He is the funniest man on the planet.( Where is the "I'm taking the p1ss big-time" emoticon ?)

Saw the guy perform at the Circus Tavern at a Christmas do. Without a doubt one of the funniest comedians I've ever been to see. A lot of his material didn't include race, religion, etc, but was just genuinely funny quick-fire gags.

Of course, you couldn't deny the racist and sectarian overtones of what he done at times, but that tended to be highlighted and his talent as a comic pushed aside.

As an aside, during that Circus Tavern gig, he told a joke about a black man and the National Front. After the punchline, a member of the audience shouted out "Too right, Bernie, too many of 'em", to which his response was on the lines off 'F**k off, mate, the joke was about you, you thick c***, f*** off back to the abortion bucket sunshine." Extremely crude, but he made the guy look like the tw.at he was!

And yes, I tend to have left of centre views, so it looks like I will fall foul of the pc brigade and be banished from socialism. And all because a fat northerner croaked it. B****rd.

Maybe at the time I liked Ben Elton, but in hindsight I don't think he believed a word of what he said. Ok, can't fault him for The Young Ones and BlackAdder....but jumping in bed with SIR Andrew Lloyd Webber and all those god-awful musicals he churns out and those self righteous books.....:fury:

What have Queen ever done to you?

Queen themselves, nothing! Wonderful band.

However using their songs in a terrible, **** cringing musical is another thing altogether!

ok ok he is a racsist and nothing can condemn that but I can't belive how some people are treating his death as great news. show some respect. he shares theviews as unfortunatley alot of people around the world, why be so disrespectful of someones death.

Why should I show respect? I loathed the man. He made a career out of hatred.

This bloke deserves only the respect he gave to others! None!! the world is a better place without scum like him!

And many, many thousand and million didn't and wouldn't. Mostly ones that were Jewish, Black or Asian.

Goodbye Bernard, don't come back. The world is a better place without him.

And millions more didn't!

So? Name one comedian who hasn't had his or her critics.

I don't think we should be mourning this man's death, but neither should we be celebrating it.

The huge majority of all jokes have some basis in mocking others, just because Manning used these jokes more openly than others, doesn't necessarily mean his life and career should be dismissed.

Now I don't actually know much about him (I'm only 16 and he was therefore mainly before my time), but from the clips I have seen on youtube, some bits are very funny. The ability to make people laugh is a rare talent, regardless of how it is done.

No it isn't! There are better ways to make people laugh than to use basic, insulting, ignorant stereotypes that are plainly wrong.

It's the lowest, most basic form of comedy and takes very little talent.

Spot on. In the rush to dance on Manning's grave, people appear to have forgotten that he was working at a time when Love Thy Neighbour was on telly and people in It Ain't Half Hot Mum put boot polish on their faces.

Manning's main crime was failing to learn the lesson of King Canute. When the tide turns, you cannot stand against it, but you must move with it - and if you don't, then you perish. For that we should pity him, but not condemn him.

I hope he finds peace in the next life, because he was too often ill-at-ease in this one.

Matt

Oh. Phew. Thanks a lot. At least now I know that becoming an incredibly famous, and largely popular, comedian "takes very little talent."

I'll bear that in mind when considering my future career eh?

Matt
