Revell versus Harrold

Harrold or Revell

I'm talking about the fans being on his back from the start. The statistic that he has now not scored in 52 games just proves how counter-productive booing your own players is.

Mind you, the statistic isn't true; he's scored a few.

No, it's true...

Last league goal he scored for us was against Wolves in December 2006.

and, IIRC, many fans were impressed by him at the start. He brought us right back into the game at WBA and I was initially pleased we had added another dimension to our attack.

No, initially he was slated left right and centre, labelled a panic buy, and we were told by someone who had been a lino at a game of his in his early days that he was crap. All this before he had even kicked a ball for us. THEN he scored the equaliser at WBA, had a good game against Norwich and people wavered in their opinion of him, but soon got back into the habit of slagging him off.

Maybe so, I was counting cup matches. But the point still stands, all that does is prove how counter-productive booing your own players is.

As somebody stated in another thread from the past, our central midfielders are so free-scoring. We also have wingers who can score, and a traditional goal-poaching centre-forward in the form of Lee Barnard. With this in mind, given what Matt Harrold brings to the team in terms of a quality touch, good vision and physical presence, does it really matter if he doesn't score that many goals??

Before I get completely lambasted, I agree, a player who labels themselves a striker should really be aiming to achieve double figures for a season, but I would argue that Harrold bears a number of qualities often posessed by a decent combative defensive midfielder...he is strong in the challenge, it is well documented on here that he can hold up the ball very well, his passing ability and vision are of a good quality. Don't get me wrong, I would never play him there...I personally think he is best suited to playing behind the front two. Thoughts?

Attributes Tilson, Brush and Austin feel Revell can bring to the table as well as notching up double figures in the scoring charts...

It's been a week since Revell signed, He's only just made his home debut which he was undoubtedly nervous for. Give the lad at least a month to settle in before stating his flaws.

Hey...ESB, I'm not one to judge so early...I truly hope Revell makes it at the Hall. I for one will be shouting encouragement whenever he is nearby!

In fairness, I don't think anyone is stating Revell's flaws, more pointing out Harrold's strengths - which need to be pointed out as they seem to pass a lot of people by. We've absolutely got to give time to allow Revell to settle in here (something we weren't able to do with Harrold) and I'm confident he'll do the business.

More than anything, I see this thread as an interesting comparison of fans' perceptions of two players who are in the squad to play the same role. But as I stated earlier, merely being compared to Harrold appears to be a criticism in some people's eyes.

No he doesn't.

He's trying to knock it in to Gower, but the ball flicks up off the defenders foot and lands perfectly in Macca's path

I'd have thought that the last thing people can say about Revell is that he doesn't "put himself about". He's chased and harried the defenders in both of the game he's had.

He plays in an ugly position, he's never going to look like a particularly great footballer, but he's had a couple of chances in the two games he's played for us which even someone who appreciates what Harrold brings to the side would acknowledge is more than he does. I think Revell can be a big player for us but if people are expecting a skillfull 15 a season striker then they will be disappointed.

Revell absolutely slogged his guts out in that game, at one point in the 2nd half he challenged for a header in the penalty area and when they broke ran all the way back to left back to cover.

He looks pretty comfortable on the ball, more so than Harrold.

I personally thought he contributed far more than Barnard on Saturday.

Revell or Harrold ???

Simple one this . We've had a few chances now to see what Revell can offer . Does he bring anything to the party which our noble Harry didn't ??

So what's this? Is Revell our new pantomime villain?

Revell quite obviously brings something that Matt Harrold didn't. He had at least three or four goal attempts on saturday. For all Matt's workrate and occasional surprising piece of skill, that's probably as many as he managed in his last half a dozen first team matches.

Not seen enough of Revell to form an opinion(has anyone?) he played a couple of matches then had to have an operation and only just returning to full fitness, will wait till Revell has played a decent amount of games till I judge the lad

Revell I guess. I think I've seen enough of him to say hes not very good. He had the shots yes but how many hit the target or looked close to going in?

Harrold without a doubt.
This team makes chances,it's tough being a striker next to Freddy and all the other crap we've had.
Harrold plus one class other in this team would make it.
