really sorry but i don't believe 4-4-2 or 5-3-2 are the best options with the personnel we have at the time of this post.

Re: the discussion Flinty and I had, I think the back four need at least 1 if not 2 defensive midfielders covering them to make up for the complete lack of pace.

5-3-2 is seeing us getting repeatedly ripped apart and when Brown did play 4-4-2 (almost out of spite to prove it didn't work) we got ripped apart again.

for me it is either 4-1-3-2 or 4-2-3-1, with the latter being my preferred option in the short term.
I don't actually like 1 up front, but the only feasible formation I can see us pulling away from danger is a 4-2-3-1.

Connor Hall could be one he had is eye on, ex Sheff Utd, Bolton making just the 1 appearance for Bolton.

Played for Woking last year and Chorley on loan. Before moving to Chorley permanently in the summer.

bagged 2 tonight, he had 17 in 39 before tonight, so it's now 19 in 40.

23 years old comes from Slough.
He might fancies moving closer to his home?

Whilst we are throwing names about. How about a punt on Shaun Jeffers at St Albans. Already bagged 19 goals this season in the NLS. 29 years old so no spring chicken but certainly lethal in front of goal. Could he make the step up a division again as a No.9 for us, a position he seems to be excelling in this season. More previously used as a winger with less impact. I remember him being held in very high regard in his early days, but for whatever reason never pushed on and proved himself at EFL level. Perhaps a last shot for him to try himself at a higher level?

Toyosi Olusanya at Middlesborough is one I'd like us to try and bring in as well. I happened to watch this guy by chance at a pre-season game for Billericay in the summer. My god he absolutely tore it up. Bagged a hat-trick I think and destroyed defenders with his frightening pace. Exactly what we are missing. Only 24, can operate anywhere in an attacking sense, but probably most suited to a wide role. Must have something about him if Warnock took a punt and took him to Boro. Seems to be an unused sub most weeks for Boro. Might be a stretch to entice him, but worth an ask I think. He looks mustard and a perfect fit for us. One we should of tried for in the summer when at Billericay, but our useless network let us down yet again.

Will Tomlinson has experience in League Two with Mansfield before being released last September.

Could be a Kettering player. Callum Powell scored again tonight, 7 goals in 11 games this season for him now. He has the same agent as Steve Arnold and summer target Chris Stokes (and Jake Hyde too if he was a realistic target).

Hyde was realistic, and one we were prepared to pay money on.

We’d essentially agreed terms with him, and almost there with his Club too until Wrexham came in and the goalposts moved. We couldn’t compete with their transfer free/wages.

I'm pleased we didn't sign Hyde tbh.
A typical Brown target....paying money for a 31 year old (no matter how good his goal scoring record was) isn't something a club in our position should be doing.

3 in 7 this season.

Having options like Murphy, Dalby & Hyde at this level would have been phenomenal.

It would have been a nominal fee, nothing like what Wrexham eventually paid for him.

But out injured already.... reportedly for 6 weeks.
It's a game of opinions for sure....but IMO Hyde along with Akinde were both potential expensive, lazy signings that we had all become accustomed to.

Learning from the past we know how quickly this can become a Southend 0 formation if we don't have the right players- and of course with the right players other combinations work.

Under MM when we had 4231 I simply looked at the career scoring records/strikerate of the 3 behind the 1. It absolutely screamed no goals.

Teams who play 4231 successfully have plenty of goal threat from the 3 and the right 1. Not sure we have the right 3 and we would have to drop one of Murphy and Dalby whilst leaving the other more isolated. Not sure its a recipe for success therefore.

You really are something else Steve - Stan’s been officially in the job less than two weeks and he’s busting his balls to help turn around a club that has been in MASSIVE decline for 3+ years now. Seriously, get a grip….
And in that time we have already been beaten by Chesterfield and f...ing!! Woking we should be smashing these teams! Ok chesterfield used to be a league club and deserve some respect but not the pub teams!

I reckon there are a fair few pub teams that have been run more competently than us over the last few years and it's definitely going to take longer than a couple of weeks to sort out the mess we've been left in.

We will be in a much better position to sign players after the end of this season as a lot will be off the books by then (presuming we give up on a few options). However, I suspect it will hard before then unless we have some real money to spend.

I Keep promising myself not to respond to your posts but I can't resist on this one. If you think we should be smashing 'pub' teams (incredibly disrespectful) how do you suggest this is done when you reckon we should be 'outing' the majority of our squad? You either live in a very simplistic world or you're on a permanent wind up for the rest of us. I'm struggling to decided which one it is.

Its so hard isnt it... just stick him on 'ignore' is the best way. Absolute drivvel.

Remember this is the same guy who criticised me and my son for going to support the team this Friday at Grimsby instead of staying at home and watching BT Sport. The key word here is SUPPORT!

I think a decent manager could/will get results from whats here ..
It would take a miracle worker to coach pace and agility into our ageing defenders…

With respect, I completely disagree with you. There are some areas of our team/squad which have deficiencies that can only be rectified with a change of personnel I’m afraid.
