Recommend me a book

James Patterson - I love all his books I have read, and I think I have read most of them.

His Alex Cross novels are really good, but my favourites are the womens muder club there are 7 so far. I have not read 7th Heaven yet as its not on paperback so will not match my collection on the bookshelf. There is an 8th coming out early next year.

James Patterson writes a good novel - the chapters are short so keeps you in and I highly recommend them. If anyone wants to borrow I can send, but I do want them back.

He co wrote with Andrew Gross on a few books and I have read his books too. They are worth a go.

They are thrillers and always a twist - I have always found that once I start I can't put down.

Currently reading "The Magus" by John Fowles. Some of it stretches as bit too far into the realms of fantasy for my tastes, but I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in psychology and philosophy.

This yaer I'm taking the 50 Book Challenge, attempting to read 50 books in the year, I probably won't manage it but's already encouraging me to read more.

So far I've read 'Life is Elsewhere' by Milan Kundera, and I'm currently nearing the end of 'Moab is my Washpot' by Stephen Fry (autobiography) and 'Dharma Bums' by Jack Kerouac (again).

So i'll be needing a new book soon, has anyone read the Dexter books by Jeff Lindsay?

Just started reading the Flashman series. Great stuff. I read on average 2 books a week, so 50 a year is a bit lightweight.

The first book I always recommend is Catch 22, Ive no doubt said it quite a few times already on this thread, but if you haven't already read it, go and read it! If you have read it and enjoyed it, try some other Heller, such as Something Happened. One book I'm re-reading at the moment is Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which is another one of my all-time favourites. Next up for me is Faulkner's Sound and the Fury.

For more recent fiction have a look at something like Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz and Equator by Miguel Sousa Tavares.

I've been reading a fair bit of non-fiction as well, ranging from pop culture Chuck Klosterman's Killing Yourself to Live: 85% of a true story; Tom Wolfe's the right stuff on the first astronauts; to Hunter Davies' football classic the Glory Game. Am currently also wading my way through Hayek's The Road to Serfdom for those interested in political philosophy.

The Flashman books are great! Can't recommend George MacDonald Fraser enough. Also, check out Black Ajax. In fact the only book of his I kind of struggled with was The Reavers, although I might tackle it again soon.

I'll donate £5 to Little Havens if you include War & Peace, Ulysses, and Crime & Punishment in yer challenge :D

Read both Catch-22 & One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, brilliant books.

Surely they'd count as more than one book each! :stunned:

If you could plough through all three in a year I'd be amazed, let alone with 47 others, unless it was Tin Tin or The Cat In The Hat!

Why Crime and Punishment? It's not particularly long, nor hard work.

It's an excellent book and well worth reading.

Never read it mate, I have an allergy of literary classics. ;) Only ever read Jude The Obscure, got bored of Wuthering Heights and had a copy of Mdm Bovary on my shelf for years.

I'd make an exception for Crime and Punishment. I've never been particularly taken with Hardy, never even bothered to try and read Austen or any of the Brontes so if that is all you've read in terms of classics, I'm not surprised you don't have a favourable opinion of them.

Dostoevsky is an excellent writer. Crime and Punishment is my favourite out of his books and indeed one of my all time favourites, but The Idiot is also worth reading. Have yet to read the brothers Karamazov.

I shall give it a go after I've finished the few I have to read.

"Feed the Goat" by the one and only Shaun Goater. I rarely read books and I really couldnt put this book down, think it took me 4 days to read. It was fantastic.. 10/10
Other good biographys would be Gazzas , Shearers, Lewis Hamilton, David Beckham the my side one and Roy Keanes is something special too. Learning about their lives just show you that footballers lead a normal life like everyone else

Deer Hunting With Jesus - Joe Bageant

It dispels a lot of the preconceived ideas we have about the inhabitants of the American deep south whilst at the same time confirming many others. It's thought provoking, even frightening at times, and gives a real insight into the reasons why this area and population of the USA has more or less been forgotten by corporate and 'middle class' America.
