I'd much rather have 5 or 6 players capable of 8-10 goals a season than one 30+ goal player. For starters, if you are too reliant on one striker, if he is out injured, suspended or off form, then the team fails to function. He is also easy to mark out of the game, especially when you go up a level.

Consider us a few years back... Freddy was unplayable in L2, needed Goater in L1 and couldn't cut it in the Championship to the same degree.

This year we have McLaughlin, Wordsworth and Atkinson all chipping in with goals.

Long may it continue!

I thought someone last year put to bed the 'myth' that you needed a 20 goal a year striker to get promoted

From memory the poster went back 5-10 years and looked at all of the promoted league 1 and league 2 teams . The majority did NOT have a 20 goal a season striker

Stats for the championship are easier to find - in the last 16 years only 20 of the 48 clubs promoted from the championship to the premiership had a 20 goal a season man (42%), over the last 10 years its 15/30 (50%). Some clubs have been promoted with a top scorer on 8 goals!

Very fair posting.
When I think of a 20 goal League 1 scorer I immediately think of Leon Clarke; and then that the sides he plays in DO NOT do well over the season.
It is a team & squad game, in the main, AND this year we have a good squad and a better than most top starting/playing 14.
Back the lads, don't stress the negatives, push the positives and a real "feel good" factor can be worth calling "the 12th man".

We will be back in for Jay Simpson... what he has hit 10 in all comps... did not even start this campaign because of speculation.. Orient are not playing well, think of the goals he would get for us.... 100k in Jan, new hero.. (sorry undisclosed fee) wait and see.... I've been right most of the time :)

this makes me laugh, 6 more assists makes him the most intelligent player, as a forward he should be nearest to the goal...of course he is going to flick it onto the other nearest person, as he is Mr Shot Shy.

Forwards need to score more, it's what they are employed to do.

Anyone else think Ironshrimper and mrsblue may just be the same person? If you can't see what Cox brings to the party then that's laughable in my opinion, it's blatantly obvious that the guy has played at a much higher level than League One.

This is a short-sited view in the modern game. Nowadays clubs look at overall stats rather than the obvious. Its all about how many points a club gets when a particular player plays. If forward A gets 10 goals in 10 games, but the team loses 7 of those games, but forward B doesn't score any but the team wins 7 of those games, who cares who scores the goals? If the team is more succesful with B in the side, he's the guy who'll play and rightly so. Our stats with Cox and Ranger in the side are outstanding, which tells its own story.

Your being critical and being brutally dishonest......they have scored 8 between them.....end of,fact.:stunned:

Tell you what mrsblue why don't you end your boycott, get off your a**e and ring the ticket office. Come and see for yourself, we're 10 unbeaten for a reason and the likes of Cox/Ranger/Ferdinand - all of whom you've slagged off at various stages of the season - have played a big part in that. The fact that you openly admit to barely seeing Fortune and Ranger play but yet are quite happy to criticise them really does put your credibility at an all-time low for me. I haven't seen a bad word said about Fortune from anyone who attends regularly.....that speak volumes. I'm sorry but your constant reliance on stats from your armchair to determine a players contribution to the team really does annoy me. Gianfranco Zola didn't reach double figures for goals in 5 of his 7 seasons at Chelsea - I guess he was a load of rubbish who didn't contribute much to the team too....

It's not all about goals, far from it. Take Cox and Ranger out of this side and watch the goals dry up from all areas, the bulk of the creativity will be gone with them. There's a "fact" for you.....

Don't waste your time feeding the silly attention seeking. Unfortunately all message boards have this rather sad trolling lark and the worst thing to do is to give attention IMHO. Which I suppose I am doing in a backhand end Way!

South Bank Hank has already posted elsewhere that they are not the same. Please don't keep posting this. thanks.

20 goal strikers are more products of the team than the individual. There are countless examples of players scoring 20 goals one season and then changing clubs and it not working. Think Simon Cox, David Mooney, Charlie MacDonald, Elliot Benyon, Graeme Jones etc

It's about confidence, a team set up to play to their strengths and plenty of supply.

Those who can consistently score 20 goals a season, even when changing teams, are a very rare breed.

And it's not even as if an individual scoring 20 goals is any guarantee of success. Better IMO to have multiple players grabbing double figures.

Good observation. Some would point out that the strikers often go up a league (or two) and therefore it makes the task of getting 20+ goals harder but I think you have something in that the player fits within the team for that period of time.

A few years ago Nick Pope scored a hat full for someone (Port Vale?) and then went dry as did Ryan Lowe (for Bury I think).

Forums posts still not showing.... I'm not Mrs Blue just have an opinion and probably spend more directly on the club than most (not all)

The thing is they don't always repeat a 20 goal season.

Nicky adoje was signed by charlton for 800k and has by there own admission been really poor.

We were after jay simpson and he hasn't done much this season.

Sorry what does the amount you spend have any bearing?

I spend fortunes week in week out following SUFC, and have done for over 40 years, but "sometimes " I can be wrong, ask my missus!
